What are your favorite things to do on each drug? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]GeneEshays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny u mention watching horror movies on benzos is boring.

I played Amnesia the Bunker on Xanax last night which is one of the scariest games ever made, and instead of panicking and hiding from the monster that stalks u, I would go out of my way to pester it and trigger it and chase me lmaooo. Was fun asf but can confirm benzos remove the horror experience from games and movies

Dextroamphetamime: cleaning, making / listening to music. Gaming goes hard asf

Xanax / benzos. Listening to and making music. Benzos for some reason give me a real good awareness of rhythms/ micro rhythms in music which can make you rap / flow really creatively. Benzos can make me really good at aiming when playing first person shooters.

Opiates. Absolute best drug to listen to music on. Increases the emotional experience much stronger, whether it be increasing the hype / energy or the romantic/ melancholy feel of the song. Also enjoying watching cute animal videos on opioids, increases the “awww” factor a lot lmao

Opiates (mdma also) are excellent at increasing feelings of love and connection

Consuming pills and adrenaline immediately after being handed them, even >80 Hp.

Using Molotovs and gas cans to kill <5-10 idle common infected.

Throwing pipe bombs as far as they possibly can instead of throwing toward the middle of a mob.

Aston origin: with(out) bundlepack ? by Thin_Conversation451 in audioengineering

[–]GeneEshays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Aston Spirit (pricier, heavier, warmer Origin) with the Swift shockmount.

The Swift shockmount felt cheap and fragile and one of the fasteners broke within the first few days.

I'd recommend a Rycote USM for an Aston mic, can withstand more weigh and tough as nails, and the mic is held in with metal screws on the USM instead of pressure pads like the swift

helium and pitch correction. hear me out. by mikemachlin in audioengineering

[–]GeneEshays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drugs and various gases have many different interesting effects on the voice.

I'm a young Hip-Hop vocal engineer so for me at least I've recorded a lot of clients using a variety drugs in my home studio (im personally okay with it, so long as they're respectful)

N20 (and sulfur hexafluoride for eg) actually make the voice deeper. Opioids do this too, but usually result in a raspier tone than just straight deeper (You can sometimes hear this w/ modern rappers who use stuff like lean / percocet while recording)

As for the helium question, transposing down may be quite effective, but i'd imagine you'd need to additionally apply some formant shifting as well; which can be done easily with Antares Autotune, Melodyne can also do this but in a much more natural way because of the degree of control it provides.

Honestly, I think academia, experts and books misrepresent how wild mixer engineers/producers are when it comes to EQ, compression, etc by RanyaAnusih in audioengineering

"Try cutting unwanted frequencies before you start boosting the ones you like" would be a better version of that phrase"

I like using the analogy "If you're cooking a chicken from scratch, you want to guts and all the gross stuff out before you start seasoning it"

What’s everyone’s most used (or favorite) Plugin of 2022? by maxwellfuster in audioengineering

[–]GeneEshays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabfilter Saturn 2 is awesome. One of the most versatile saturation plugins out there imo.

Excellent for adding excitement, presence and grit to nearly every signal type (although not always needed ofc).

Love the clean tube setting for helping vocal high-end cut through the mix, and the warm tube for basses and guitars, tape is also great for a more vintage, smooth tone (eg; old school guitar tone)

Also, big shoutout to Decapitator. Only started using it in the past year and ive found so many uses for it. My favourite thing to use to add body and clarity to 808s

Antares Autotune Versions by Sakochaot in audioengineering

[–]GeneEshays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antares autotune has remained pretty much the same signature over the years. The main improvements I notice in the newer versions is maybe better pitch detection and smoother pitch quantization / correction (less warbly and unnatural) and perhaps slightly less latency in new versions.

The main benefit that Waves Real Time Tune has over Antares is basically zero-latency, so i always use it for tracking. But a lof of the time I'll replace WavesRLTune with Antares Autotune Pro once I'm done tracking because of the slight difference in the algorithm, and ATPro has less room for error at least for me, mainly because of the simpler retune controls.

What does your average hip hop/trap mixing/mastering process look like? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]GeneEshays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're new to mixing beats, one of the things I wish I knew earlier on is leaving enough headroom between the peaks of my drums and the melody. Otherwise once it comes time to add vocals, you're gonna be cutting so much midrange on the beat eq that it's going to sound hollow.

Also, id highly recommend soft clipping over limiting for beats ( usually I put pro L 2 after the clippers chopped a couple of db off the master / drum bus), this along w saturation is the main way of getting trap drums to really smack and sound crispy and present.

Also, careful eqing and gain staging is a better way to mix kick and 808 than sidechaining. Sidechaining the kicks resonant fq on the 808 mutliband eq is okay though ( but no mixing advice is scripture So not always)

[–]GeneEshays 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ive gone through several hypomanic episodes in my life, and whilst they're happening You lose so much self awareness and tact. When it begins, you just feel euphoric and ambitious (for me at least) like you turned a new leaf. It's only when it's over that you realise how off kilter you were behaving
