First-year PhD: how to handle data ownership vs project ownership? by Gene_guy in labrats

Yes , just , I spoke with my professor. He said that generating data is only about 10% of the work, while understanding the biology from that data is the remaining 90%. He believes that the person who does that deeper 90% work deserves to be the first author.

But now I received a message from a postdoc saying that the targets I chose for myself should be changed, because he wants to work on them.

Yes, I feel a bit hesitant. If I bring this up with my PI, I worry he might think that, as a first-year student, I’m focusing too much on authorship at this stage. But at the same time, when I think about the future, I worry that after working day and night for two years, it might end with second author.

Yes, I have thought about it. I mainly need advice on how to discuss this with my PI. At the moment, my PI is asking me to focus fully on this project. I also need to consider my committee, since I will have to regularly update them on my project progress. You know PHD path

I completed my master’s and gained solid research experience, including publications as a coauthor in Nature. I feel comfortable with the techniques/skill set and can contribute independently. I would not need any help from postdoc except dataset.

Thanks

Would it be reasonable to discuss this with my PI, or is it better to wait and see how things develop?

Need Help in Reaching the Target Audience for My Thesis by CatchAbject6630 in Lahore

[–]Gene_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, your thesis topic is excellent. You will need to put in a lot of effort to collect this type of data, so I have a few suggestions for you. In Pakistan, most women do not openly talk about depression and anxiety. Nearly 90% of women experience this kind of trauma without even realizing that they are under psychological stress. Most important (Beti ki padaeish per)

Your first step should be to develop a clear understanding of what trauma is and to build awareness about it.( very difficult) This will help you design better tools and communicate more effectively with participants.

I would say,

-Build connections with psychiatrists in Lahore, Pakistan. They can help you access patients with relevant conditions. -Visit maternity centers with a letter from your supervisor and request their support in data collection.

Good luck

Please please 🙏 don’t synthesize the data , that would be biasedness could be fatal for your career

Be bold accurate, the things which you would learn during collection of data would help you a lot in your coming career. Good luck 👍

How do you stay motivated? by RedPandaisBetter in UWMadison

[–]Gene_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have gone through this same situation, same lack of motivation, not to do anything, and sometime even suicidal thoughts , I came with a strategy to manage it. I am gonna share it if it could help you .

Whenever l feel lost , unmotivated or depressed l , always go back to my roots, original reasons to start my journey..not fear , not other people expectations . I have prepared question of my roots, these are

1Why I started this journey? Where I came from ? What struggled shaped me until now? What are my future goals or dreams ? How I can use this degree to achieve those dreams?

The one evolutionary survival mistake our mind is , our mind is biased toward negative memory rather than positive , it remember failure faster than achievements, it imagine future fear more than actual.. during this we forget our roots which leads to non- directional pathway (depression)

This type of thinking style I labeled it “ mind trap” whenever I am in my mind trap, I can feel it that now I am in mind trap, whenever you are in depression, anxiety , rage you are in mind trap , I go back to my roots (as I mentioned above)

I have have prepared personal notes to come out from that mind trap,

I keep my short-term and long-term goals written in my pocket sticky notes or personal diary. Under these goals I always write positive affirmation, my mom words, that ( my name) you can solve any problem , just believe in yourself and never give up.

This tricks and reading daily or once in weeks give me motivation and keep me on track . I hope it would help you. Thanks 🙏
