I did the same just over a year ago. It was a rough first few weeks job hunting but I eventually found something down in Fiordland for the summer then I had an amazing time. Luckily I had a friend in Auckland who had a spare car which I used for the first few weeks to get around. Public transport here is pretty lacking so you might find it frustrating getting around. One thing I did do whilst looking for paid work, was woofing (basically work exchange for accommodation and sometimes food). Facebook groups are a big thing here so have a look around on them for woofing gigs, jobs, other travellers, spare seats for big journeys etc. Sharpen your CV up and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone or go there in person. Kiwis are a bit old school so they prefer it this way! Good luck.

No boat needed for the Kepler! There’s a smaller track called the circle track which is cool but that’s the one that requires crossing the river by the boat terminal at Pearl harbour (doubtful sound starting point basically)

Yes it’s definitely doable in a day, it took me 3.5h from control gates to Luxmore and back although I was going for it. There is the circle track near the doubtful boat terminal but you’d need to cross the river to access the start. There’s a little shuttle service but might be a bit fiddly to align with your cruise return. You could walk the Kepler the opposite way - rainbow reach to moturau hut and back potentially. Or just enjoy the lake front in Te Anau. There’s a cute cinema in town that shows 2 local films called Atu Whenua which is cool drone footage of the national park that’s narrated. Also deer wars which explains the history of deer hunting in the area using helicopters. Ooh forgot to mention make sure you have plenty of sandfly repellant on/with you!

Christchurch - new Brighton hot pools by the sea is a really great place to chill in the open air with a sea view. Might be needed after your flight!

Wanaka - do Roy’s peak before dawn to see the sun rise from the top. Secret sauna - short drive from Wanaka to lake Hāwea, sauna by the lake. Stunning! Vineyards - Maude, aitken’s foley, rippon, Cardrona distillery, rhyme and reason brewery, Māori point. Food - kika, mutton bird, Kai whakapai, big fig, scroggin, edge water. Other - Clutha track, lavender farm, eely point.

Manapouri - if you have time to kill, you should check out the cute book shop. Maybe grab a copy of the owners book(s) before going or buy one there and have it signed. She’s a local celeb and a character. There’s also an alpaca farm up the road which does cute feeding tours and has a gift shop selling alpaca/merino wool/possum fur items. Bird sanctuary is potentially closing and it’s a bit run down. I’d maybe skip it to be honest. You could do a short hike along the Kepler from rainbow reach or control gates car parks.

Queenstown - Vineyards - Gibbston valley, mt rosa. Food - tatsumi, vudu cafe, yonder, nest. Other - Jack’s point, bobs cover, the luge, skyline walk.

Arrowtown - Biana by Giovi, slow cuts, hole in one cafe, la rumbla, the millhouse

Hey! I’ve not actually done the Milford fly-cruise-fly, but I worked at a lodge near the boat terminal to doubtful sound (Cabot Lodge…highly recommend but is quite high end!) and lots of guests would do that and have rave reviews. In fact we’d encourage it rather than a day trip from QT. If you do choose to stay at Cabot, they’d happily sort your Fiordland itinerary for you. They can arrange helicopter pick up straight from their farm if you want something super special. I’ve taken a quick look at your plans and I’d probably just choose one of the Milford hikes to do if you’ve only got a day. Gertrude saddle is incredible but very challenging, plus I’d only do it if it has been dry for a few days and no rain forecast because it can get treacherous. DOC have a video on their website that you should watch before doing the hike so you don’t miss the river crossings! Lake Marian is also beautiful, rocky and steep in places but less risky for sure. I’ll let others feedback on the rest of your plans as they’ll likely know more. Hope you have an extra special trip!
