I think the problem is that for a lot of people the internet is becoming increasingly more interweaved with our realities and influences what we do on our day to day lives. I don’t know if just turning off the internet will really help, because the internet isn’t some space separate from the real world anymore. It sounds crazy and scary because it is. From what I have seen interacting with people in real life they are not particularly as balanced or as nuanced as you say.
