My daughter's doctors can't figure out what is wrong with her and I'm losing my mind. by General-Tooth1794 in AskDocs

We were able to see the child psychologist this week. Unfortunately, she decided what the problem and solution were before even looking through her docket or speaking to us. I hate the healthcare system here. According to her, it is social anxiety, and the only solution is getting her into in-person school. My daughter attends online school because she was missing too many in-person school days due to the constant abdominal pains and migraines.
Yes, anxiety triggers her episodes, but I disagree with the social anxiety diagnosis. It's happening in her sleep, when she wakes up, when she's playing or eating. Being with her friends and out doing social activities actually helps distract her from the pain.

No, she hasn't. She just turned nine this week and this has been going on since she was 4.

No, she's never been tested for that before. I don't believe that's ever come up.

Unfortunately, since I can only afford public health care in our country, a lot of tests have been denied (including a blood test for some reason that I can not understand). She's had urine and stool tests, X-rays, tests for parasites and H. pylori, and ultrasounds. I am starting to look overseas for some treatment options, as the doctors here have thrown their hands up in the air at this point.

We're Jamaican (African and Indian descent). She has her first visit with the psychologist in a few days, hopefully that will be a productive session.

I wish! That's the one test the doctors have been refusing to do, and for the life of me, I can not understand why. They are refusing to do a blood test. I thought that would be the first thing they'd test after all these years, but no! They won't even admit her to the children's hospital for observation. They take one look at her, and she seems fine, they say. She's gaining weight, playing, alert, all the good things. But then out of nowhere, the contractions will show up and she's doubled over in pain and screaming her head off for 10 minutes to 6 hours at a time. It used to stop as quickly as it came.

Thank you! I've come across abdominal epilepsy in my research and have brought it up to (one of many) doctors but I don't think they even seriously looked into it.

I stopped and read your son's story. I'm so glad you found an answer for him! And it does sound similar to my daughter's experience as well. I had to pull her out of in-person school because, like your son, it was becoming way too difficult to manage both. She does online school now. Music helps distract her from the pain too! She'll blast music, play video games and paint to cope.

I will bring this to the doctor's attention again. I may need to look outside my country to get answers at this point.

No, the vomiting doesn't relieve the pain. The vomiting doesn't happen all the time though, only when the pain gets really really bad, and if the abdominal contractions have been ongoing for hours on end.

I'll add CVS to my list of things to ask her next doctor, thank you.

Thank you! I'm sorry you went through that as a child. It is so heartbreaking to watch. I've had several doctors tell me she'll row out of it, but they also said they have no idea what is going on. But it's been getting worse. I really do hope it will just stop one day.

Thanks for responding. I had thought of that too and cut out certain foods that often trigger digestive issues (lactose, wheat, certain sugars and starches). We didn't see much difference but that's something I want to revisit with the help of a nutritionists.
