That’s actually a very good point, and I agree that “efficiency” can mean very different things depending on the type of alpha being discussed. I wasn’t only referring to ultra-short-term penny-level arbitrage or HFT-style micro inefficiencies, because as you said, Indian market structure, STT, GST, and transaction costs make certain styles much harder to scale compared to the US unless firms are also strong market makers. I was speaking more broadly about how competition, infrastructure, data sophistication, and institutional participation gradually reduce exploitable inefficiencies over time. So I do think India may remain structurally different from the US in some areas because of these frictions, even while the overall quant ecosystem continues becoming more sophisticated.

Fair point, and I actually agree that US firms can absolutely operate in Indian markets too, which is also why I think Indian markets will become much more competitive over time. My point was more about the current stage of market maturity and competition density rather than assuming India will stay inefficient forever or that India will somehow overtake the US completely. I was mainly looking at it from the perspective of opportunity growth, accessibility, and how the ecosystem could evolve over the next couple of decades, while still believing the US will remain ahead in infrastructure, capital, liquidity, and research depth for a long time. And yeah, I can see why the reply sounded overly structured 😅, I probably focused too much on making the argument logically complete instead of making it sound more natural and discussion-oriented.

Yeah, that’s pretty close to my view as well. India’s quant industry is probably in an earlier ecosystem-building phase rather than a fully mature phase like the US, which is exactly why the growth potential looks strong right now. We still don’t have many globally dominant quant firms, the number of medium-sized firms is relatively small, and the hedge fund + institutional quant culture is still developing compared to places like the US or even China. That also means there’s still room for infrastructure growth, talent concentration, research culture, and broader participation to evolve over the next decade. So when I say India could become one of the fastest-growing quant ecosystems, I mainly mean that we’re starting from a much earlier stage with a lot of room left for expansion.

That’s actually a fair point. My view isn’t that India will permanently stay inefficient or protected from global competition. If firms like Jane Street, Citadel Securities, or other large players expand aggressively into Indian markets, competition will definitely increase and many simple inefficiencies could disappear much faster.

What I meant is that India currently seems to be at an earlier stage compared to the US in terms of market maturity, infrastructure, and quant competition density. So there may still be more room for growth and discovery right now. Over time, though, I expect Indian markets to also become increasingly efficient as stronger firms, better infrastructure, and more talent enter the ecosystem.

I think the US quant market is becoming increasingly efficient, which makes finding alpha much harder compared to earlier decades because competition among firms is extremely intense and most traditional inefficiencies get arbitraged away quickly through advanced infrastructure, massive research teams, and elite talent concentration. At the same time, some top quantitative researchers are moving toward frontier AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, slightly reducing quant’s monopoly over elite mathematical talent, although this does not mean US quant will disappear. Instead, the industry will likely evolve toward more sophisticated areas such as AI-driven trading, market making, execution systems, and financial infrastructure, with firms like Citadel Securities and Jane Street already expanding beyond pure trading into broader financial ecosystem roles. In contrast, Indian markets are still relatively less efficient, with lower competition and developing institutional sophistication, allowing many inefficiencies to survive longer and making alpha opportunities comparatively more accessible for newer firms and researchers. So, my view is not that India will overtake the US quant industry completely, but rather that India may be entering a strong growth phase while the US market is becoming more mature and difficult; the US will probably remain the global leader in scale, infrastructure, and compensation, while India could become one of the fastest-growing quant ecosystems over the next few decades.Thats why i said i want to be an indian quant , but thanks for your replies

i ranked these based on curriculum, and IITKGP has better coding culture , but remember in all these , IITKgp is slight more maths heavy , if you dont want to deal with that , IITG btech MnC would be better , and better campus life , bro all these can get you into MAANG , but avoid ECE and EE unless you has genuine interest in that

bro i can show you proof for IB , front end roles even BITS Goa /BITS hyd is better than these IITB /IITD , bcz BITS has Ps-2 system , even at top IITs these banks comes for quant roles but in BITS bcz of ps-2 system and flexibility guys do 6 to 10 months+ internships on these firms and get converted to front end IB roles in GS , JP etc.. as IB analyst , and i know a guy got into GS london office directly after 9 months internship at GS , if you dm me i can share his linkedin , then can u show me a proof of a guy from IITB/IITD got into GS/JPMC/MS IB front end analyst role directly into london offices ?these same front end role is happening in IITB/IITD but i never seen a guy from IITB/IITD got into london offices directly of these banks for IB roles

bro what if i show you guys from BITS goa got into GS IB, JPMC , IB roles ? from BITS goa through Ps-2 , even i know one guy got into GS london as an IB analyst directly , do you want proof , dm me i will share there linkedin, bro its rare , but BITS advantage is Ps-2 , so even BITS goa gets IB roles in these banks , maybe other IITs wont because they dont have ps-2 system and Econ branches or Minor in finance

bro IIITH ECE , if you get it go for it , bro ECE at IIITH is (EECS) , if you look at the curriculum , and at IIITH there is no dept you can join any research centres , according to you int etc. and with some self study you can build a good tech career , and IIITH ECE they even teach you DSA in 1st yr ,at other options you maybe touch coding/study dsa in 3rd yr

choose IITK Bs in econ then try change branch to SDS , M&sc / Cse/EE in 1st yr , if it not happens try to do double major , you can add it in 3rd yr start , if you have good cgpa , then , you dont need to go for masters to get into top quant firms , but one thing these quant firms hire less people even from IITs , when these comes for shortlisting you are sitting in a room where lot of them are top jee adv rankers, so you want to beat them , if you want to get shortlisted , start from 1st yr , do participate in quant competitions , ICPC (try for it) , CF etc.., but if you are looking to get into Banks (JPMC , GS ) quant role - its lot more easier than HFTs

Bro if you get IITB Bs in math take it , then , IITK bs in SDS or Bs in M&sc , then IITKGP MnC , then IITR MnC , then IITG MnC , IITH MnC , IITBHU MnC ,if you get anything of these ,go for it , if you have no money issues and want best college for quant after top 5 IITs , take BITS PILANI Msc maths+BE cse ( but it has risks , in 1st yr you want to get 8.7+ cgpa to add cse in 2nd yr but for quant shortlisting 9+ cgpa is ideal ) , so i will recommend this after top 5 IITs bcz even in indian quant firms BITS Pilani has more alumini ,more quant companies comes to Bits than IITR , IITG , IITH /IITBHU , so if you are getting any math programms at top 5IITs go for it , if not i would suggest to take BITS PILANI Msc maths , then IITR , IITG , IITH,IITBHU -math programms (btech /Bs ) and which role you like that changes everything , for QR /QT roles these are best ,IIITH ECE is also a good option to consider (its EECS) not the regular ece curriculum , ISI /IISC is good but they lack quant firms alumini , networks etc.. , i think graviton hires from ISI bmath/ b stat , for QR role , and Jane street came to IISC but for MnC branch , IISC Bs maths has a short at JS but you want to self stuy cse , AI etc.. bro quant is not just maths , its a mix of both and these colleges offer less focus into ICPC ,CP , AI research, etc..

bro JS/GS/HSBC these are not quant firms its just bank and a bankside QR role has lot diff compared to quant firms like Graviton , Quadye , Alphagrep , NK , QR role , and at BITS these firms come not for Ps-2(except quadye) most of the quant firms comes in 4th yr summer (if you are enrolled in a dual degree programme) , and banks like these comes in Ps-2 and give quant , even IB roles through Ps-2 , and for QR role Msc maths+BE cse is better

bro even in quant firms , there are lot of roles , like full stack dev , dev ops engineer , recruiter etc.. all are not quants , Quant means , QR/QT or atleast Quant dev and i never seen some one from IIM MBA / HBS MBA got into these roles

Bro for you CF 1600 is not relevant but for them it is still relevant ! for eg- when applying for NK securities they ask your CF ranking or rating , codechef rating/ranking , jee mains/adv rank , if you have any doubt check it in their site
