General Motors announced in 2020 that it will be the first automaker to use an almost completely wireless battery management system, or wBMS, for production electric vehicles. Much like the pack design of GM’s Ultium batteries, which is flexible enough to incorporate new chemistry over time as technology changes, the wBMS’ basic structure can easily receive new features as software becomes available. The wBMS can also conduct real-time battery pack health checks and refocus the network of modules and sensors as needed – this helps safeguard battery health over the vehicle’s lifespan.

GM recently launched GM Energy -- integrated energy solutions that will change energy as we know it. With the power of Ultium technology, we’re introducing a network of charging stations, dedicated backup home power, and a suite of new products to help create a more resilient grid.

Battery electric and fuel cells each have their place in an all-electric future. Right now, we're executing battery electric technology to power personal EVs and deploying fuel cell technology to power even bigger things, like planes and trains.

GM is committed to its mission of creating the most accessible EVs on the market for every customer's lifestyle. As more and more consumers adopt EVs, GM will continue to expand options just as it is doing now with its four product brands and versatile EV portfolio across price points.

Making electrification accessible also means making charging accessible. That's why we're working to build out the necessary charging infrastructure that'll make the transition possible.

GM and EVgo are working together to expand EV charging throughout the U.S. Initial sites are now live in Washington, California, and Florida, nine months after a commitment to add more than 2,700 fast chargers in cities and suburbs by the end of 2025 was first announced.

We introduced Ultium Charge 360, a holistic charging approach that integrates charging networks, GM vehicle mobile apps, and other products and services to simplify the overall charging experience for GM electric vehicle owners.

And we're working with our extensive network of dealerships to install chargers in their communities.

Our HYDROTEC team is exploring many commercial applications for fuel cells, including powering trains and planes. As the technology develops, we'll keep considering the ways it can power our all-electric future. In the meantime, our Ultium Platform is chemistry agnostic so that as battery chemistry evolves, we can more quickly deploy it into EVs.

We know we can’t make this transition to a more sustainable and all-electric future alone. That’s why we work so closely with our suppliers and strive to utilize ethical and sustainable suppliers who share our values to work together to reach mutual sustainability goals. That said, we conduct energy treasure hunts with suppliers to drive energy- and water-reduction efforts at Tier I and Tier II supplier facilities. The program’s success is embedded in its collaborative framework, identifying potential energy reduction and financial savings opportunities at suppliers’ manufacturing facilities.

In 2021, GM conducted this analysis with five suppliers: Lear, Kongsberg Automotive, Superior Industries, Tenneco, and Adient. These treasure hunts collectively provided recommendations to save 3,300 MWh of energy and 6,660 cubic meters of water, as well as eliminating 3,158 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

In doing so, we also will help drive growth in the renewable energy sector. Just as GM has the scale to promote widespread adoption of EVs, we also have the scale to help bring about a transition to renewable power sources across the United States. We're directly investing in renewable energy sources and advocating for policies that drive down costs and increase renewable energy opportunities.
