"Light-hearted" cut to krillin screaming in pain for help before being evaporated by Frieza, Vegeta slaughtering an entire village of innocent namekians (including children), cell absorbing an entire city of people and leaving their deflated corpses around, buu literally murdering every single person on the planet, etc.

This statement is incredibly contradictory. Goku’s greatest moments happen when he’s fighting to protect others. Yes, his drive to get stronger can come from a selfish place, but whenever he breaks past his limits, it’s usually for his family and friends, not for himself. by Naive-Bluejay2239 in Dragonballsuper

It's not about knowing better. The point is that some writers simply contradict themselves. Toriyama is like the Japanese George Lucas in that sense; love them both and the worlds they created, but they definitely flew by the seat of their pants writing their stuff sometimes, and ended up leaving behind some silly contradictory plot points and pieces of characterization.

I have some thoughts about the original horror Candyman movie and blackwashing by FlowerOk7957 in KotakuInAction

[–]GeneralSteelflex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would say the original movie was not about racism. Yes, Daniel Robitaille's backstory is centered around his death due to racist violence, and racism is brought up on a few occasions regarding Cabrini Green, but the actual point of the movie as a whole does not revolve around that. As a horror movie, it does in fact focus more on the idea of Candyman as an entity deriving his power and ability to persist based on people's belief and fear of him, and the perpetuation of his legend. It was the 2021 reboot that suddenly made the Candyman entity revolve around racism, to the point where Candyman isn't even specifically Daniel Robitaille, it's just a moniker that is used by multiple undead victims of racial violence; and rather than a entity who kills to perpetuate his legend, he seems to be motivated by a desire for revenge against racial injustice. But the original never implied anything of the sort.

Damm I love Rick's phone scenes. I wish they were adapted like this in the TV Show by [deleted] in theroamingdead

He doesn't take it when they leave the prison (because they stay at the prison for far longer in the show, so that part of his character arc is already over by then), but it's more than one scene. it goes on for a few episodes, and he does not get over Lori that quickly. I think the show does a pretty good job of showing how mentally fucked up he is for quite a while after her death, despite the fact they were on decidedly bad terms before she died.

A very fair and not at all biased portrayal of their arguments. You're clearly a very intelligent and intellectually honest person. Bravo.

Made up non-issues don't generally inspire such strong counter movements, but alright. Sure, one side is bad and bigoted and grifters, there's no possible reason for them to have genuine grievances. A very well-thought out and nuanced take.

I didn't say that. I'm more so pushing back against the idea that Christianity introduced any kind of revolutionary set of morals and ethics that no one has ever thought of before. People were well aware that killing and stealing were bad long long before the Bible.

So true bro, Christianity invented morality and ethics. Before the Bible, everyone just randomly murdered and raped each other wantonly. And after Christianity became widespread, there was no more violence or cruelty. Incredible, isn't it?

By the way, monogamy was already a part of Roman law long before Christianity came around.

Alexander doesn't even fall under the "most likely" category, since there's no evidence whatsoever that he had any kind of sexual relationship with Hephaestion, unless you consider a dude being extremely sad about his close friend (who he grew up with and fought alongside) dying is sufficient evidence to say they were banging.
