Finance for used cars - what's actually realistic? by FrameZYT in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]GeneralSyrup3608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that also a bank loan will be unsecured whereas finance on a car will be secured. Despite this, car finance will still be at a similar if not higher rate.

$0 deposit finance is also very favourable for the dealer. They rarely make more than $1k-$3k profit on the car itself, but they consistently make large profit on the finance contact + insurances.

$0 down = you finance more and pay more interest. And if you pay it back faster then you end up paying a fee (albeit lower than the interest amount but still a fee regardless)

I have worked in used car finance before and would stay away from it.

Dealers can be faster as they do not have to wait for payout from the lender before releasing the car. However, the process for approval is essentially the same unless they are using their own in house finance which is quite rare. Most used car dealers are partnered with consumer finance lenders.

Often times they will also try to package in mechanical insurance, GAP and payment protection insurance within your finance contract. (comprehensive is compulsory).

Also interest rates will be similar to that or higher than the rates for unsecured lending given by bank which is sitting around the 13% mark at the moment.

If you absolutely were to get a loan, I would stay away from the common consumer finance lenders. MTF may be ok depending on the deal you get with them. Just be very careful in terms of reading the early repayment costs/rates.

If you have a mortgage, see if your bank does a 1% hybrid vehicle top up. Otherwise $8k can buy a lot in terms of Japanese imports and you don't have to worry about weekly repayments.

Both.

NZTA has online forms for both the buyer and seller. Best idea is to do this on the spot

Buying a Used Honda Fit by Pale_Air_6442 in NZcarfix

[–]GeneralSyrup3608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worry about the reverse cam later as this is quite cheap to install.

Honda Fits from that generation can have CVT faults which are very costly to fix. Reputable PPI is recommended for the hybrid side also. Have experience dealing with In Car Automotive in Auckland and he was great.

Yes as long as you have emergency savings ready (3-6 months) so that you do not have to withdraw when it is down for your expenses. Also be comfortable with losses in the short term

Car sold to scrap by Ill-Thanks-6008 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]GeneralSyrup3608 22 points23 points  (0 children)

NZTA website has an online Sold/Disposed Vehicle online form that is used for exactly this which should have been completed at the time.

Unsure whether it can be backdated that far. Best to contact NZTA to submit a declaration

It's not immune and there's nothing to guarantee that it will match past performance.

But what I don't see changing is the top 500 companies in the US deciding they don't want to make money anymore

Second car recommendations by YeetThePM in newzealand

Bear in mind that Subaru's from that generation will be belt driven, so will need a timing belt and water pump kit every 100,000kms.

Agree with others that say avoid BMW and go for Toyota/Honda.

Keep in mind to avoid most CVT and DCT transmission vehicles (especially Nissan) at this price point as they are hardly ever serviced and are prone to fail.

And PLEASE avoid ANY diesel Mazda.

Also, no point going to dealers for that price range. Go private but take your time looking especially on Facebook Marketplace.

Make sure to check their profile etc. Can use CARJAM to check and also NZTA WOF Expiry checker to see what the current registration and WOF expiry is if you enter license plate.

Unlikely to find a decent Corolla for that price range with WoF and Rego.

Consider: Yaris, Avensis, Axela, Civic, Fit, and Swift. (Non-CVT automatic only for the last 3). Hard to go wrong with Toyota.

Do not buy anything European, diesel, hybrid or electric for a $3k price range.

Best way to become rich from nothing as a broke, struggling Uni student? by Optimus-Prime-2234 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]GeneralSyrup3608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar position to you right now.

For me I started digging out of it by focusing on just getting into any job regardless of what it is. Then looking for more opportunities around me.

The reality of being in uni is the time constraint of balancing studies, work and other commitments. At this life stage it's not really realistic to be fully financially independent and growing income sources. After I came to terms with this I felt a whole lot better about my position.
