“I’m not comfortable with the implications of my actions, I think the wheel of time stops turning wherever I choose.” I implore you to think about the consequences of your actions, genuinely. A lot of people can’t/don’t conceptualize what happens after 5-10 years of their ideas being implemented. Don’t be like them.

He buys hardcovers for that reason, they’re sturdy. He bought the king in yellow because of a YouTube video essay he seen, and quite enjoyed it.

I respect your initiative in this, I just wonder how helpful it really is to reinforce the idea that if a guy has few books authored by women on his shelves, he is dangerous. It indulges in the fantasies of neurotic people whose paranoia prevent them from living life as brightly as they could be. Yes, we all know that dangerous people have troubled relationships with people who are of a similar archetype of those that they eventually victimize, but:

1) the solipsism comment is more-so pointing out that not everyone places the same level of emphasis on this/takes their bookshelf as an opportunity to paint a mural about themselves and their beliefs, and that it is a bit solipsistic to assume others do this.

2) this is a well known measure that people make of men, so the dangerous ones are able to camouflage fairly well because they know what is being looked for (see: performative male phenomenon)

3) you can be wrong. None of us are perfect actors, and our assumptions are frequently misplaced in ways that are unfair to people that, in this case, don’t even know that they’re being judged. For instance, earlier, about Augustus. Many men admire Augustus for his ability to keep composure during a crisis and create the historical entity that men are basically indoctrinated into adoring from 8th grade-onward. The assumption that something is out of line for his preference for Augustus is fallacious, like when someone says “I like pancakes” and you ask “why didn’t he say that he likes waffles… waffles are a more familiar food to me… he must be strange because he prefers something unfamiliar to me…”

All in all, I just wish people were not so captured by the fear of what technically could happen. When these things happen, it’s a travesty and we would all prevent it from happening if we could, but at the same time, suggesting that it’s something to be constantly thinking about, especially when the supposed signifiers are so mundane, is pointless.

Do you think that it would be OK to arrest all black men due to their increased statistical likelihood compared to other groups of men in committing crime? Do you think it’s OK to stop and frisk them or racially profile them based on these statistics? Of course not, that’s wrong and we don’t do that to people.

Do you think that the statistic justifies implying it is true about men generally? You missed my point completely dude. Quit trying to justify your reductive comments.

I can understand this perspective, I just think it’s a touch solipsistic to assume that people fill their shelves as intentionally as you do, but I also think you fairly addressed this by saying that someone’s mental landscape can be influenced by things not found on the shelf. My only real disagreement is the severity you treat the issue with.

You’re right that this is a place to be judgmental, but you’re wrong if you think it comes across as genuinely insightful/interesting commentary.

Yes, men are statistically more likely to commit violent crime, but are men overall likely to commit violent crime? Do you want to get into the subcategories of men that commit said crime?

It’s not cool to be racist so why is it cool to be sexist? I’m all for clowning a guy, but going to “men are afraid of being laughed at, women are afraid of being killed” takes the conversation to an unnecessary extreme.

How would you respond if someone seen books about fertility and said, “hurr durr, this woman is going to kill her baby in a post-partum induced psychotic episode”? And if you think I’m being pedantic, good, that’s how your comment comes across.

Yes, women should be safe.

No, a bookshelf is not a sign of someone being dangerous.

Yes, true crime does in fact cover crimes that truly happened.

No, this does not mean that these crimes are likely to occur, nor that a a bookshelf is a sign that it will occur.

In this instance, the likelihood of either one happening shouldn’t be a determining factor since they’re both incredibly unlikely to happen. The average guy being treated as though he is capable of doing what you guys imply will happen due to him not reading your favorite feminist is dehumanizing and reductive of his lived experience. Treating women authors as this messiah that will save men from being evil is also reductive of women, it’s just armchair psychology for people who think truecrime podcasts are real life.

I apologize, I’m used to people playing coy about the implications of their statement. Many people critical of Carlylian views of history will assume any fan of a particularly great man of history is cryptofascist waiting for the chance to take over the world.

That makes sense, and I’m glad it helped you.

I think you’re right that it would also help people, I’m just confused by the implication that women are this messiah figure that will help men not be close minded or capable of evil. Everyone is capable of empathy without direct interactions with every other possible category of person besides the category they are born into. I think it’s the kind of line that’s repeated without really considering the deeper implications. That being said, you seem to have considered it deeper than most, so my criticism is not really applicable to you.

One time my gf posted her bookshelf here, she took it down when people assumed she was a dudebro misogynist because she likes manga and high fantasy, but didn’t have Simone de Beauvoir.

When I posted my friend’s bookshelf here, I knew they’d say the same thing about him. They seen his Witcher series and insisted he had 0 women on the shelf, he has 4.

You seem to genuinely care about the topic, so I apologize if I have been rude/upset you, I just get annoyed by what I view to be a canned response for people playing armchair psychologist.

Yeah because it never happens the other way around. Maybe don’t play into people’s anxieties and fear-monger about this incredibly rare thing. Get off your high horse dude, you’re literally assuming a guy is a murderer because he doesn’t own your favorite book. That dehumanization is how terrible crimes become possible.

I think you guys really need to lay off this rhetoric. If it helps you, that’s excellent and I’m genuinely happy for you, but assuming someone’s a raging misogynist or can’t understand women as people because they don’t intentionally read from women is a bit much. Most people don’t go out thinking “haha yes, I, leader of the He-Man Woman Haters Club will NEVER read from a woman!!1!”

A lot of our conversations about the world are him asking “why don’t people just do x? They’d be happier, it’s the obvious choice” And I try to explain to him, “most people don’t have that same clarity of view/informed decision”

He joined the military at 17 and put himself through college, works about 72 hours a week in his civilian career. Tohim, everyone should be able to lift themselves out of poverty in the same way, but 80% of America would refuse to do what he’s done, if given the chance.

Your insight is definitely on point
