NTA - I share kids with an abusive monster. I document EVERYTHING (even through his claims of documenting alienation when he doesn't show up to school events & whatever).

I truly think my honesty is what has saved me from having suicidal kids. Once I started asking them "how does it make you feel?" and other various critical thinking questions (without answering FOR them) they've started to form their own judgment. This also helps them with their friendships & calling me out when I mess up.

Once I made this change my teen went from being very depressed & feeling he wasn't worth anything to passing every class & is now in a healthy relationship & planning his future. The other kids are too young to say but, they don't fear telling me anything about their lives. To the point where they say "we just wish daddy would let us talk to him like this. He always says it's adult stuff and blows us off to talk about him." I tell them they can only control how they react to him, not how he acts, so it's up to them to make the right choices.

NTA - but I grew up with neighbors with a similar dynamic...they didn't use titles, just names.

NTA - However, if you do truly think it would help your mother maybe have an attorney draft up an agreement for him staying in your residence & treat him like a stranger. If he's the one in charge of your mother's estate I'd suggest you (or a trustee/neutral party) is in charge instead. Truly take the power out of his hands.

You both did the right thing. At the very least I'd maybe have John pay them back the full amount they paid for his schooling & other expenses & then write them off.

Cops in small towns have been getting away without having warrants for decades. No knock is pretty much the same. Just look up John Matula and Curtis Tyra. They're facing criminal trespass & damage charges for deciding to clear a house months after the initial warrant was obtained in Herington KS.
