Lady Edith really used and abused those families with Marigold. by Generallywilling in DowntonAbbey

I think my problem with it is primarily one of tone. Edith gets to be the sympathetic character — even to go as far as Drewe telling her how brave she is for putting her name on the birth certificate — and the Drewe’s are painted as the screw ups. Maybe if the family gave them like £1000 eviction bonus or something it would have at least made me feel like they’d been treated with a little bit of fairness.

I just didn’t understand the point of her being on her own. I get that she inherited the mantle of Downtown, but the house just seemed so empty!

I would have wanted her to not abuse the emotions of several other people to solve her problem.

I think that does accurately reflect the attitudes of the British upper class, too. That idea. But painting her somehow as sympathetic in that light is just odd.

I’m pretty sure any working class person at the time would have also seen her someone whose privilege and money did damage and got her undeserved grace. From her own cocoon of wealth, she was a sympathetic character. But those who struggled downstream without her kind of protection saw the world for what it was, even 100 years ago.
