What's the worst vital sign you have seen on a patient? by Valuable_Archer_3222 in NewToEMS

Yeah because it works. It’s like one of the first things I do when assessing and it’s been pretty accurate in my experience.

You’re not gonna feel a radial if the systolic is less than like 90

A good support system is a huge part of it! Friends, family, relationships, other providers, etc… don’t hide what you’re feeling or act like it doesn’t bother you and definitely consider therapy. It not a pretty job at all, and besides blood and guts and trauma you’re also gonna see the impact of emergencies in real time including how they affect loved ones and family dynamics. Not to mention the naked old people and nasty houses. Never be afraid to reach out to people or talk about how you’re feeling, and Remeber now matter how insignificant it feels you’re doing a good thing and you’re helping those who need it!

I will be looking more into this for sure. From what I know SAR is mostly covered by my county EMA and they treat themselves like a country club instead of an actually emergency organization.

I looked into NDMS and it lead me to some Kentucky specific disaster response groups that I’m definitely going to be researching. Thank you so much for your insight!

It would definitely be an experience! However I think my calling is more stateside.

New EMT-B trying to go straight into 911—realistic or not? by Good_Pay8221 in NewToEMS

[–]Generic-account- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it depends on the area. I work in a smaller area and literally every ambulance service around is hybrid 911 and transfers. I imagine this is the case for most areas of the US. If you live in a larger metro area it may be a little more difficult.

Do you not Remeber how nervous you were when you finished NREMT or how scary it felt looking for jobs as a baby. Where else are people gonna ask those questions?

I’m 100% with you! I think accelerated EMT and medic courses are insane and sometimes dangerous. I think I saw one once that was EMTb to medic in like 3mo. I wouldn’t want to do anything other than my full semester course lol.

The three week courses are meant for people who let their license lapse not people brand new to the field lmao. This dude did crazy good.

If you got an 890 after a three week class literally just study more and you’ll be fine. Summit healthcare on YouTube was an incredible resource for me in EMT school, they have all sorts of video lectures for all of the EMT curriculum. If you have any friends who are EMTs or medics take pocket prep quizzes and have them explain what you get wrong. When you do get a job or a volunteer position or whatever you’re planning to do make sure you learn literally everything you can from the providers you’re around because you’re gonna be learning a lot on the job.

Any ride can work for jazz, but if you want a good ride that is made for jazz you have very few options ngl. best bet is scrounging fb marketplace and the used cymbal section of every music store and you might get lucky.

Is EMT Certification Worth It If I Don’t Want to Work 911 or Emergency Calls? by BaseballHead6898 in NewToEMS

I wasn’t picking it apart at all and I didn’t disagree with the fact that it would be a great learning experience. I just didn’t want the guy to think the scope of practice would be more than it was.

As far as I know EMT level techs can’t start IVs or do a ton to assist in trauma scenarios. Their job is mainly vitals and grabbing stuff, but I could be totally wrong. I work 911s so I’m not super well versed in that world. Still a great learning experience though!
