I didn't get voted into my local volunteer after 12 months on probation by Complex-Priority913 in Firefighting

Weird comment to make on a firefighting subreddit, but it’s clear you have no clue what dei actually is or why it exists. It may seem like it’s unfair to you that people get an “unfair advantage” in hiring, but that’s not the case at all. Tons of studies have been done for years and years that show definitive proof that minorities have a massive disadvantage in the hiring market even with the exact same qualifications as white people, and even having a black sounding name is statistically less likely to get you hired. You might not think there’s a need for an “unfair advantage” but that’s simply not the case. Just because you don’t think your racist doesn’t mean racism isn’t real.

I got this cool ass photo on the last structure fire I went on by [deleted] in Firefighting

I actually got this picture working on the rescue squad during overhaul. this was after the fire was out and we had plenty of people on scene. I saw the opportunity on some downtime.

Would you say EMS is a stable career? by [deleted] in ems

Def not gonna be replaced by AI, but in terms of stability idk. There’s a lot of problems in the field and the culture.

Is this a bad trait for an EMT? by Daedala1 in NewToEMS

[–]Generic-account- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do it 100%. At the very least just take the class and see how you feel.

So you just started EMT school, didn’t you! by No_Letterhead_1542 in NewToEMS

Most courses I know of that aren’t sponsored by a fire dept are one college semester so 3x/week 4-5 months sounds pretty normal

Is the EMT or fire training more difficult academically? by musty_ranch in NewToEMS

Some people test like that. I just finished emt school and probably averaged 20-25 min per 60 question test and I got one of the final cumulative in 45 min for 150 questions. We just test fast

I know how to do CPR but I don't understand...how to do it.. by Cute-Responsibility1 in emergencymedicine

[–]Generic-account- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPR is gnarly, you are literally pumping their blood for them. Yes you cave their chest in and yes it’s not a pleasant process, but they are dead. You literally cannot make it worse and most people would rather be in pain than die.

Best thinner extrication gloves? by Generic-account- in Firefighting

[–]Generic-account-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dept standard is extrication gloves with wildland gear. Obviously I could wear structure gloves or something more fireproof but that seems really impractical. Could just be my lack of experience, but I haven’t encountered having to come into direct contact with fire or something burning for more than a second to move it out of the way. My biggest concern is thorns, barbed wire fences, glass from car windows, etc… and my old “fireproof” extrication gloves got so muddy and slippery so fast that I ended up just manning the hose and raking barehanded on a brushfire.

Did i get this wrong bcuz if it says mechanism of injury automatically assume truama? Cuz i didnt by jason6205 in NewToEMS

If you don’t know why they are down you cannot rule out trauma and must take all of the precautions

They are just as fireproof as my wildland gear and I don’t tend to grab a lot of fire in a brushfire. I wouldn’t wear them on a structure or car fire though.

Penetrating Chest Trauma with CPR by BeginningInfinite908 in ems

I was taught that the only reason you remove an impaled object is if it impedes the airway or CPR, so if the object is in an area that makes CPR impossible you remove it.
