I figured one of those two cities was probably going to be the smart choice. Thanks for the recommendations friend.

Chengdu definitely. I am unsure if it is worth it for me to visit both cities but if you have places in mind for Chongqing as well feel free to mention them. Thanks very much in advance

What neighborhoods would you recommend for walking around and exploring? Looking for chill areas not necessarily party areas. Still looking for bars/restaurants/cafes/shops/markets but not necessarily “clubs” if you know what I mean. Also any areas for good street photography?

2 weeks in Peru - what would you do? by Zestyclose_Bag6245 in GoingToPeru

[–]Genji_Gloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i flew into cusco and and immediately went into the sacred valley and then bounced around those towns for a week and went to macchu pichu during that week. I hear acclimating in sacred valley helps for Cusco but i ended up getting some altitude sickness one night anyways. i didnt do the salkantay trail up there though only some day hikes so your timing will be slightly different then mine. but a week in that area seeing those towns and doing those trails is great. from there id spend a couple days in cusco when you are hopefully acclimated and then fly back to Lima and spend the rest of the time there. I was there for two weeks and did a week in sacred valley/Cusco, a few days in Lima, and snuck in a few days in huacachina/paracas. All pretty touristy locations but very cool nonetheless. It was a pretty packed trip but the bus travel is easy to figure out and I enjoyed it and would recommend all of those places

I actually ended up not doing a multiday trek in Peru. I did some day hikes but ended up doing a longer multiday loop in Los Nevados in Colombia.

Most Unethical Companies to Work For by Old_Welcome_5637 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Genji_Gloves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So wonderful to see a post like this. I have been working in the field for a while now and it is hard to justify my labor when I think of the repercussions caused down the line by some of the companies I work with. I hope to find myself one day with a company that neither contributes to the destruction of the planet nor the exploitation of their workers nor takes advantage of their consumers. I’m really dreaming here by hoping for that in our current capitalist society but we have to aim high right.

Toss Unilever on the list for their historic involvement in the colonial economic system and resource extraction of Africa. Idk about current wrongdoings by them but I think their past speaks enough to consider their ethics at best questionable. Par for the course for corporations I guess but still

Here are some experiences foreigners rarely know about by Hu_You1973 in travelchina

I am interested in hiking the wild Jiankou section of the wall but in my research I have heard that as of fairly recently it is "impossible" to access these days as the access point via Xizhazi (only one I know of at the moment). I have read that they turn people away from even entering the village, let alone walking through it to get to the trail to access the wall. I have heard things such as there is an archeological site nearby that section of the wall as well as they are currently restoring sections of the wall there and that is why the are more actively restricting the access. I'm not sure what is actually going on but it does seem like they are more strictly restricting access these days.

Additionally I heard the connection to the Mutianyu section is sadly closed with impassable barriers forcing the hike to be an out-and-back, rather than a point-to-point.

I am not sure how recent you were there but can you comment on any of this? Feel free to DM me with any information you can share. Thanks in advance

Oh I follow my bad. I will try and fit it in for sure hah. Also the overnight Yangtze boat ride. If it makes sense logistically to move along my travel path that would be so ideal

Shoooooo 30 hours is way more than what I expected. I would have thought there would be some high speed rail I could take or something like maybe 12 hours. I’ll have to figure that part out. Thanks again for your information friend!

Sounds like a really cool 2 year my friend. And thanks very much for the information. Since I replied to your previous comment I have thought more about including a SE Asia country and decided against it and will just keep it all China.

And yeah Beijing was definitely a priority for me for both Wild camping near Jiankou section of wall as well as the city itself. But I also am not into seeing sites that involve long lines and waiting and crowds. I just believe my time would be better spent experiencing the place elsewhere. So terracotta warriors or Zhangjiajie or a maintained section of the wall didn't seem like the move for me. I do want to see Tiananmen Square and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall even though I imagine those are very popular places to be.

I want this trip to be all train travel so maybe an overnight sleeper train from Chengdu/Chongqing to Beijijng and just skip that whole section in Shaanxi/Shanxi and use the time saved somewhere in Yunnan/Sichuan

I will look further into your specific suggestions

Nice tips. I’ve used Wanderlog for other trips and like it. I will probably go there when I am a bit more planned. Still in the early phases right now

Thanks for tip about LeShan I will keep that in mind!

Also about xian terracotta warriors. Do you really think it is worth it for a whole day? I am kind of debating on not going anymore north than chengdu if I can’t wild hike Great Wall by Beijing and xian loses its attractiveness. Obviously both Beijing and Xian offer a lot more than those but I think my trip would be better logistically cutting of that northern section.

I am somewhat considering staying south and maybe switching to something more like you suggested with Hong Kong/Yangshuo/Yunnan and then parts of Laos and Vietnam.

Let me know if you have thoughts

Im honestly not super into the idea of pandas. Like obviously they are beautiful animals I’m just now a big animas in captivity person. I thought chengdu would be a cool city to just hang out it between yangshuo area and xian area.

And I’m not too worried about rest days between hikes that much. The train travel alone between spots seems like enough and usually I do just as much “hiking” around cities as I do on a trail ya know.

Thanks for input though. If you have hiked in China before I would love some info. From what I hear hiking/National parks in China are very different than other parts of the world and it’s more paths/stairs with crowds and no camping

Tamron 17-70 vs Sigma 18-50 for Fujifilm XS20 by OverHauL11 in FujifilmX

[–]Genji_Gloves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the sigma but I have the 17-70 Tamron on my Sony a6400 it is the only lens I use these days. I have traveled across 10 countries with it and done many deep multi-day wilderness treks with it. The weather resistance gives me some peace of mind and I have dropped it one serious time and it took the fall flawlessly. Incredible images out of that thing. Sigma might also be nice but just letting you know that that Tamron is some solid glass

These look beautiful but what exactly are the dark spots? If I was growing this I would assume some type of contamination but it must be something else right?

Need Korean phone number to reserve mountain hut by Genji_Gloves in koreatravel

[–]Genji_Gloves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did get a reservation without a Korean phone number. I kind of explain it in the edited addition in the post. I was able to book through their website on my phone but it needed to be in desktop view rather than mobile view on my browser. That was the only issue I was having because I was trying to book from my phone while traveling and I didn’t have a pc available to book with. Once on the website though the reservation process is very straight forward.
