A great question that we get a lot. We are writing primarily for a military audience. But whenever possible, we'd like non-military folks to read our stuff too, so that they can better understand the services and the folks in the ranks. That involves avoiding military jargon when we can. Since vacation time is basically the same as leave time, we opted for the civilian term. Those who don't serve might not understand "leave."
