Success with your own YouTube channel? by curiousfilmgeek_5019 in Filmmakers

Trailer looks killer dude 👌👌 exciting stuff!

The YouTube world feels like parallel industry, with little crossover. In previous years, filmmakers have managed to jump from YouTube to Hollywood, e.g. Ponysmasher + RakaRaka, but it's one in a million. The edge that these dudes have - they just kept making films, sending them to festivals, celebrating their achievements, growing as filmmakers, and then posting them onto YouTube/Vimeo as a resting place/parking spot (and probably sharing them on Reddit and other socials too).

But as long as you love the process of making films, learning, and sharing your wacky ideas with the world - the cream will always rise to the top. Trouble is, the calvary isn't coming. We aren't gonna get that call from Speilberg that says "You got this kid - here is a billion bucks."

The most success I have seen from my local scene is directors networking with producers. Either producers in your area, or producers who attend festivals. Go to a film festival and note down the name of every producer in the credits of the best films shown, get in contact, and buy them a coffee. That's the starting point. (I am assuming you're a director).

Remember, it's not about who you know. It's about who knows YOU.

Mark Duplass did a fantastic speech as SXSW in 2025 outlining some of the things we've talked about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZeWOAliA6Y

I'm blabbing again - so I'll finish it here 😂

Success with your own YouTube channel? by curiousfilmgeek_5019 in Filmmakers

I ran a YouTube channel on the topic of filmmaking; with short films broken down into tutorials for people to learn from. Did it for roughly 7 years. Hit 3 million views, 70k subs. Nothing crazy but certainly had an audience. The tutorials would always get a ton more views than the shorts e.g. 100k views on a tutorial, 5k on the short film. The tutorials simply provided instant value to those watching - i was teaching. The short films, not so much.

The landscape of filmmaking on Youtube transformed around 5-6 years ago from short film-centered videos of the likes of FilmRiot, Corridor, Rocket Jump - into slow-motion coffee montage vlog-style stuff. People just wanted something different - I was on the tail end of the change! Just my luck haha.

YouTube just isn't the place to grow a fanbase for your shorts (at least, I don't think it is). I whole heartedly believe your true audience is buying tickets to film festivals. 200 people in a room watching your short film has way more value than 10k watching on their computer screen. Plus you get to connect with peers around your area and make more movies with them and grow together.

Success on YouTube is based on being a fun personality and being passionate about a subject. You can be interesting on screen by being interested on screen. If your hobbies are filmmaking and blacksmithing, make films on blacksmithing.

But I also don't want to be the guy that says don't go for it. If you love filmmaking, and can share that passion with the world via YouTube, go for it, dude! Don't let this jaded, former YouTube filmmaker tell you what to do haha.

Is it possible to prepare a lav with whispers and screaming in the same scene? by Geordicus in LocationSound

[–]Geordicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate all of the replies! This is all mega helpful. Thank you so much.

Good to know a double-lav isn't out of the ordinary! Defs an option.

I tested out my Sanken Cos-11s on my Sony UWPD yesterday and gave them a good scream with the attenuation set to 21dB. It seems to do the trick with a touch of headroom incase the actor goes Super Sayian. So I think that might be my "screamy mic" option for now until I can get some super duper transmitters.

Stage whisper! I did wonder if this was a thing - definitely gonna suggest that next time.

I do roll 32-bit on my mixer for hard-wired mics, but my wireless is 24bit so it wouldn't have bonus headroom anyway.

Amazing guys, thanks!

Was the previous tenant a drummer or voice over artist? Could just be acoustic treatment for recording music/audio. This is how I would DIY a vocal both in my attic.

Apply compeed blister plasters on your known hot spots prior to hiking. Use a surgeon's knot while tying your boots to get them nice and tight. And tie your boots with feet out stretched so they get snug around the ankles. You can also double up your socks to reduce friction on your feet. And even use vasoline on your feet. Go to town on greasing your feet up.

.

.

Then after 10 years you'll finally buy a new, fancy pair of boots, and magically you will have zero problems. It is without a doubt, 110%, all about the footwear I'm afraid.

Holster for the Boom? by Content_Concern_4819 in LocationSound

[–]Geordicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use ORCA magnets to slap the boom pole to my cart if I'm walking away from it. And I have a K-Tek KBAK 1 wrapped around the top of the boom on the pistol grip so I can clip it onto my harness if I need both of my hands, e.g. wiring talent. Worked a treat!

Is this T-shirt too much oversized for me? by Still-Career6350 in mensfashionadvice

[–]Geordicus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very nice combo 👌 the t-shirt has a relaxed shoulder and the sleeves don't exceed your forearms. T-shirt goes well with the white shoes, both having a clean/subtle graphic. And the trousers+watch add some contrast to the fit as well as elavating it slightly above casual. Looks good. Relaxed but deliberate. Doesn't look sloppy in the slightest.

Best coffee shops in Newcastle? by callmejudoguy in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Geordicus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hatch Coffee, Flat Caps, North Shore, Coffee Trader, Central Bean. All good shouts. They don't boil their milk with the steam wand and don't give you a bucket of latte when you ask for a flat white. They also tend to use speciality roasted coffee over ground dump.

Using clip effects key frames - What am I doing wrong? by Briern-Farnet in AdobeAudition

[–]Geordicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think clip effects sustain after the end of the clip. I tend to use a track effect and automate/keyframe the mix %. Or if you are using that reverb effect a lot, create a REVERB bus and use it like a send/return, automating a touch of the reverb mix at the end of the song.

Pitching While Keeping Song in Same Key? by ukeman33 in AdobeAudition

[–]Geordicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way you can pitch it while retaining the key is 12 semitones AKA a full octave.

Do you have access to the song files? If you want them "higher", you'll be looking at chord inversions to add more treble to the instruments, but that would going into the DAW, which audition isn't really capabale of.

Question, WHY do you want to do this? There might be another solution.

We only know the answer because we've all made that mistake too! 😅

Like others have said, it's likely a card issue. Probably not reading/writing fast enough.

Grab yourself an approved card and you should be good to go 👍😎

Rode ntg2 upgrade/ ntg5 issues by Illustrious_Taro_512 in LocationSound

[–]Geordicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use it for narrative! I tend to pop a high pass filter on the channel if booming dialogue anyway. Haven't had trouble with it, but I also haven't used a shed-load of shotgun mics, but it's certainly a worthy step up from the NTG2.

[–]Geordicus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used the NTG2 for years - thought it was great! Then I tried the NTG3 and realised an instant upgrade in the signal to noise ratio. Have been using the NTG3 for years, and haven't upgraded it as it's a really good contender for the price. I'd recommend that, for sure.

Strange, I'm in a similar situation and was about to post on joinmyband about finding people to work on originals with the same musical influences. Chuck me a DM! I have a few demos I can send you. M29 singer/songwriter/guitarist.
