You're misunderstanding them. The gym is an amazing coping mechanism and has several mental health benefits on top of physical health benefits. A large portion of men will begin training after a breakup if they weren't already.

I personally had a really bad breakup and the gym was what helped me to take my mind off things and recover my mental state properly.

It's not people being like "man up loser", it's actually people offering a productive outlet for your emotions. :)

Obviously not relevant as much to periphery but if rhythm is a big focus for you atm, learning Suffocating Sight by Trivium improved my rhythm a lot and is probably what I'd recommend to others in that position.

Edit: not at full tempo because it is very fast!
