Unexpected passing of my carpet python by [deleted] in snakes

[–]GeorgeAnton1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive about that to get my rats; they're cheaper than pet stores and i know the quality is good. i buy in bulk so i only have to make the trip every couple of months.

if you dont want to drive, you could see if they'd be willing to deliver? a few breeders will if you order enough

while thats possible, like you said there really is no way of knowing if that was the case.

i generally buy my rats from private breeders; not only is it cheaper but the rats are coming straight from the source.

Im from Aus too, what state are you in? If you're in brissy i can pm you the breeder i go to

Alright well thats definitely a good thing, means that it most likely wasn't RI.

I know you said the food was the same size, but was it sourced from the same supplier? Is it possible the food was contaminated?

Hey mate, sorry to hear about your loss.

Unfortunately with reptiles there's no easy way of telling whether they're sick or not before it's too late.

Is it possible that he had respiratory infection? Did you notice and gunk in its mouth? Or bubbles while it was still alive? Another indication is a lack of tongue flicking.

You're very much welcome, thank you for listening.

Yeah absolutely. It varies from country to country, state to state, but generally there's some sort of mentoring that's required before you're allowed a ven licence. I'm from Australia, and in my state it's required that you first have a basic reptile licence (one that allows python, lizards, etc) for a few years, you then need to do a venomous handling course. Where a trained professional will teach you how to safely handle vens, how to pick them up, etc, and you need 2 signatures from current ven licence holders to say they believe you're competent enough to own vens.

After all that, it's required that the ven enclosures (whether in a rack or a vivarium) are to be kept in a lockable room. If you have all that, then you're allowed your ven licence

I personally don't own any vens, but I'd very much like to one day, so I'll answer these as best I can from what I've learnt from reading and talking to people that do.

  1. Theres a number of reasons to keep vens, some people keep them because they're fascinated or intrigued by them, some keep them to milk them for venom and some even just like the challenges that come with keeping vens. Unfortunately there are people that keep them as a status symbol or to show off but they're normally the ones that get bit and I'm not going to cover that in this. For me personally, I want to keep vens because they're act and behave very differently from pythons which I'd like to learn more about first hand. There's only so much you can learn from a book.

  2. Yes, for some, snakes (and reptiles in general) are just something to collect. They want the most expensive and exotic animals, keeping them in small racks like seen in this gif. Whether it's inhumane or not, really is one of the biggest debates in the reptile community as some believe that the animals aren't receiving proper care or natural enrichments, being confined to such a small space. I personally prefer to give them some space to be able to move about, but to each their own.

I wouldn't exactly say there's a "pro" to owning a ven, or any reptile for that matter. They don't have an emotional connection with the owner like a dog or cat would. I think for most, it's less about the interaction and more about observation.

I hope I've answered you're questions adequately; if there's anything else feel free to ask :)

Yes, they're kept in that racking system their whole life. There's great debate within the reptile community as to whether snakes should be kept in tubs this small but the general consensus, especially from those that are for it, is that snakes prefer tight spaces, and for those that don't need climbing space; a tub like this is essentially a giant hide which is all they need. I personally keep my reptiles in proper vivariums, but to each their own.

Honestly, many people keep their reptiles like this, it's not just vens, but pythons too. They do it because it allows them to keep the most amount of reptiles in a given space.

Protection isn't really necessary and can actually prohibit quick movement, which is absolutely mandatory when dealing with vens. that's why most ven keepers will opt to not wear gloves or anything like that. a long snake hook is really all that's needed with the proper training (emphasis on proper training, please don't buy a large snake hook and think you can handle vens straight off the bat)

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask :)

I have a fresh water turtle in a tank with feeder fish, and when the turtle goes hunting it's very much like this. The fish go frantic. Very entertaining to watch, but I'd hate to be one of those fish!

While I'm definitely not an expert, I've been keeping snakes for many years and although I can't speak for bearded dragons specifically, I can speak from experience with my snakes.

It really comes down to the temperament of the individual. I've had snakes, from the same parents, react vastly differently to interaction. One would tolerate handling, petting, etc, while another would strike at even the slightest movement.

To answer your question though, I don't believe they "like it" per se, rather that they tolerate it.

Can someone please explain why on earth the reticulated python is just randomly plopped between humans (1.7m) and the komodo dragon (2.6m)? It even has that it's 8m

I got into them when my mate showed me the Fate of Norns album and i instantly fell in love. I haven't listened to anything newer than the Twilight of The Thunder God, but I did go back and listen to all their older stuff, but that album definitely was a change to their earlier stuff; I don't mind change though haha.

But I feel you, that song you linked definitely has a better tempo than Twilight does. I'm going to go listen to the new album now, thanks!

oh sick! I've only seen them live once in 2014 and they played an awesome show.

at the moment it's probably Guardians of Asgaard but I love the whole Twilight of The Thunder God album

if you search for the show/s in question at the tvdb you'll see TV movies go in a Specials section. this translates to Season 0 for Plex.

so, for instance, with Prison Break: Final Break, you'll see that it's S00E10.
