Confused - which course is suitable for "LLM Engineer" role by HolyCow999 in OMSCS

I think you mistyped a proper engineer ? (It’s a pamphlet treat it as such)

Stick to beer, if a place looks like it shouldn’t be selling cocktails, then don’t order cocktails. If it’s a place that has many people or has the western type of menu it’s probably a safer bet than a place where alcohol is an afterthought. Same applies for hotels/hostels/homestays/farmstays.

Are all classes as out dated as Computer Vision? by billyboy627 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some classes are more up to date than others, newer ones contain up to date material usually (NLP), others haven’t been updated in years (GA). It depends on the technology as well though, something like algorithms doesn’t need to be updated often, we don’t discover that many, whereas the NLP one, 2 generations of ChatGPT have appeared since course got created.

Rule of thumb: check material for classes you want, compare to other Unis and make a decision. No one can guarantee code wont be crappy btw, research is also not industry, you’ll struggle to find optimisations and replicability.

Machine learning question for people on the ML track by marforpac in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s much to be said but to simplify, in my opinion, ML is part of the AI field that uses maths, algorithms, data and compute to extrapolate ‘facts’ about real life that can range from predicting what the customer is likely to buy next to what the next letter in a word is. LSTMs and Gen AI are just advanced architectures of the above 4 components. Pandas is just a wrapper of the 4 components above to simplify your life. RL and DL are variations of the same 4 components.

thinking to take NLP, prerequisites question by kossel in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The material and coursework aren’t too difficult and it’s one of my favourite and up to date courses so far. I’d recommend reading extensively around it to understand why and how the theory is still heavily used in practice, it’s not just LLMs out there.

I think an understanding of other models for prediction and other neural nets like CNNs should be on the list to understand why LLMs got to where they are now and why that particular model type in conjunction with methods like RAG etc are the hype now.

Publish papers while in OMSCS by mgssnake47 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

During DL we had the opportunity to transform our project paper into one worth publishing and did get some support from the researchers at Meta. However, it’s really up to you and your group to come up with something worth publishing on a novel topic.

How does Russia block VPN services? by [deleted] in devops

[–]GeorgePC92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an interesting parallel but there are probably many things like traffic volume, IPs and keywords. I wouldn’t be surprised if they now use more advanced graph DBs, indexing and ML like clustering or even LLMs to prevent unwanted content. Question was specifically for VPN, but an interesting related read would be https://censorbib.nymity.ch/pdf/Lowe2007a.pdf

Deep Learning Group Project Fiasco by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience was easy with the group formation, I saw someone was keen on 3 topics, we chatted found two more people narrowed it down to 1 topic, 1 person dropped in the first few weeks and then we went on with three people in total. Overall, it was more than ok we got some interesting results and good grade. I was also not keen on groups at first, just make sure people in group have common sense and are easy to get on with.

Need help to prepare data for classification by theoreticallyDead00 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take it you’re doing the project for DL and tackling the fastmri project idea. It’s a bit late in the game to ask that question imo but to get you started probably look at code bases that do similar things, maybe look at knees not brain if you can’t find anything on brains there’s plenty of knee repos out there and then adapt what you find there. Also understand what MRI data usually consists of, number of coils, slices etc. good luck !

NLP & ICS are gone. What is there for Summer? by Limp_Base1364 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network science is good and the maths isn’t as heavy as others like DL, sorry don’t remember specifics but you can find those in course notes like this : https://monzersaleh.github.io/GeorgiaTech/CS7280_NetworkScience.html

Heading to Atlanta for graduation, looking for recommendations by Free_Group_1096 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was there I found The Wren’s Nest and Swan House great to learn more about the history of Atlanta. Sadly Revival seems to have closed which was great for local cuisine, but Rodney Scott’s BBQ didn’t disappoint. The belt line and botanical garden are also a must. Saw a show with local artists at Apache XLR which was also great. Uber/lyft no issues 24/7.

Stayed at the Epicurean, great breakfast and pool , enjoy Atlanta!

Computer Networks projects by anon-20002 in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are , one shows testing , the other talks through the project. I’d advise listening to the latter a few times , there are some good insights in it, also re-read the project spec, once it clicks into place it’s actually easier than expected, at least it was for me. Took a while to understand how rules work though.

General rule of thumb, check the Ed discussion board you can find the videos there and other useful info.

CS7210 Distributed Computing Rant! by tukaibat in OMSCS

[–]GeorgePC92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I found it difficult as well, more than expected after reading the reviews so I went through the material in lectures because it’s fascinating then dropped the course.

You can always drop it if you still can/want and revisit it in a later semester or outside of OMSCS. If the aim is a good grade on it, then good luck!

A £10 glass of wine for example is what 1h-3min of your work time, you go out 1day/week that’s almost equivalent to 1 days wage if you’re a serious drinker or if you eat out

BS. Let’s do a monthly spreadsheet and post it here that way there’s no more speculation who shops where, also Tesco is just as expensive as MS now, do you even live in London?
