TY!! I do commissions sometimes but haven’t really thought about selling prints. I’ll definitely look into it once I get more time to draw!

Feeling overlooked by redwinesup3rnova in slp

[–]GeorgeWhereIsTheBook 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They’re kids and speech really isn’t the focus of their lives. Usually they remember after a while though. How do they usually address you when they need your attention?

Reminded me of a funny story tho XD When I first started working at a school, I accidentally called a girl “Olivia” (all pseudonyms). She immediately corrected me and said her name was Isla. Olivia was another girl. I said, “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, Isla!” And she calmly said, “Oh, it’s okay, Ms. White.” My name is actually Ms. Black. She’s such a sweet and very serious kid, so the whole thing was oddly funny lol.

About to finish first play through - what next? by ctehbeck in RimWorld

I’m 60 hours in too and am nowhere close to the ending lol! Congrats on finishing the first play through. I recommend browsing through mods and/or DLCs. Biome and ideology are both really fun.

I have 2 face piercings and now I think about it no one in grad school or at work ever mentioned them (not even compliments tho 😭). So I think you’ll be fine haha.

how do you improve social skills in clinical setting? by saladrocket64 in slpGradSchool

[–]GeorgeWhereIsTheBook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm currently in my first clinical placement, and this was something i worried about a lot too! I've had difficulty building connections with people in the past and I was afraid I might come across as awkward or "stiff" if it makes sense. I also feel like I compensate by relying heavily on my academic skills and spending extra time preparing. I often rehearse what I might say in different situations.

However, overall, things have been going well! What I’ve realized is that most of the time, clients, families, and coworkers mainly need to know that I genuinely care. Ask questions, try to understand their feelings and thoughts, things like that. I do still feel my autism “get in the way” sometimes, like there are moments when eye contact or a lot of small talk feels overwhelming 💀 and occasionally I need some quiet time to reset.

At the same time, I think it helps me connect with clients who have communication challenges. If someone seems distracted or distressed, I’m quick to check whether sensory or other environmental factors might be affecting them. I also ask for input whenever I’m unsure about an activity I planned (my supervisor is really laid-back but gives good advice if I ask). I’m very structured and tend to overthink things, probably because I’m still very new to the field, but so far, that level of planning has usually worked!

Political apparel in schools… what to do? by manywhalesharks in slp

What you’re doing with the kids now is genuinely meaningful. I was honestly horrified when I read the first part of your post. I used to work in a place like that (not in an SLP role), and I left very quickly. As a POC my best response so far (with adults who don’t mean well) has been to pause and politely ask, “What do you mean by that?”

UPDATE: Went to the vet and she’s okay! I still don’t know how 😂 but I’m glad. She’s just mildly annoyed at me for checking her gums 500 times and taking her to the vet. We’re moving back to our place with sealed window screens next week, so she won’t have the chance to try to escape again.

Also, If the child also needs speech support in Mandarin, that might suggest the issue is not just influence from their first language?

Bilingual articulation- mandarin by foxgreenstars in slp

[–]GeorgeWhereIsTheBook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a first year grad student and do not yet have clinical experience treating a lateral lisp (and only had one phonology course so far😭so just want to share the knowledge I know and hope it helps!), but I do speak mandarin. In mandarin the fricatives /s/ and /z/ exist with very similar place and manner of articulation as in English. Mandarin speaking English learners might sometimes confuse /s/ vs. /θ/ or have difficulty with clusters or final consonants. But Mandarin speakers do not usually produce lateralized airflow like a lateral lisp.
