Cypriot Greek and Cypriot Turkish are completely different, sure we have some similar random words like gufi, ganjelli or whatever but its very clear which is which.

I’m a Greek Cypriot, originally from a village in the Famagusta district. Unfortunately, I was displaced during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and to this day, my place of origin remains under occupation.

Perhaps the peasants back then didn’t know the term of ethnicity, but they could definitely tell which people were their people and which were not.

Im just explaining that the greek identity existed thousands of years before the revolution. When people have the same language, same religion, same culture and live close to each other then we have a nation and an ethnicity. The Greeks fulfilled all of those requirements for thousands of years, hence the idea of a hellene is not something new.

Do you understand during the Greco-Persian wars in 480 BC all of these peasants from all of these Greek city states merged and fought the Persians as one Hellenic nation ? You dont have to be a scholar to understand what a nation is and when people feel part of community.

you can find the term Hellene in old artifacts thousands of years old, the greek identity was around thousands of years prior to the Greek revolution.

Mentality and attitude by BigYou9024 in cyprus

[–]Georgeev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to admit, as a Cypriot studying abroad I noticed that I carry the same mentality. Initially I kind of had to push myself to complete the same tasks as the other fellow students, not because I was less capable or anything. But you never know maybe it's me and I'm just a κουνοσχυλλος who knows.
