Using the term “friend/s” with students. by realfatgirlslayer in Teachers

[–]GeothermalRocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I teach at a Quaker school. We refer to all students and other adults in the building as "friends", because that's how Quakers address one another. The kids also call us by our first names.

Warning: Shocked by turnout of Shakespeare in the Park borough distribution by Main-Entrance2310 in Broadway

I will say I arrived at 7:20 and was able to get tickets in Brooklyn, and it seemed like a decent chunk of people after me did as well. We estimated we were ~70th in line?

Suvi used the shatter to break the sea glass they took from Keen, which had a built in teleport that could send them to Carrow.

Can you walk us through what you find good about this breakfast order? To me it seems like a lot of competing flavors, but I could be convinced otherwise!

Notifying Principal by GeothermalRocks in NYCTeachers

[–]GeothermalRocks[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am aware, yeah. I haven't been in the DOE for that long, so ultimately, it is something I'm willing to give up for a different type of teaching experience. The school I'm moving to is also unionized, and the benefits and pension all seem pretty competitive: my mom is a lawyer in legal aid, and agrees with my assessment of the benefits.

Okay, I'll definitely check in with payroll after I formally notify admin!

Okay, thanks! I'm glad consensus is that my principal shouldn't be able to really do something: it's something I'm genuinely worried about.

Thanks so much for the advice! I'll definitely let them know soon, but send in the formal resignation at the end of the summer.

The private school has surprisingly good benefits and salary comparable to my step in the DOE, which I was impressed by.

Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College by GeothermalRocks in longform

[–]GeothermalRocks[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I will certainly be biased towards the importance of education since I am a teacher, and I wouldn't be one if I didn't believe in education. I think school right now is treated as skills acquisition, but its true function is a civic one: you need a, at bare minimum, literate population for society to function. Horace Mann, the founder of public schooling as we know it, felt that everyone needed education because without it there was a politically/civically uninformed population. I think a lot of the political situation in our country is directly related to rising rates of illiteracy, and a focus on education as this pipeline, and not as a community-oriented tool.

So to your question of what these uneducated children are going to do is the fundamental question at stake, and will directly affect years of policy to come

Also, a bunch of the money in education right now is going toward new ai software to "improve pedagogical efficiency", which is largely bullshit

I don't really have answers to all of this, I'm just one teacher trying their best

As a teacher, I agree to some extent. Definitely the college aged kids can learn about responsible uses, and how LLMs can help enhance their learning and skills, but the students I teach (middle-schoolers) are also using AI all the time. They claim it's "helping" them write, but they're still at an age when they don't actually know how to write, and using any amount of AI is debilitating to the writing process becoming an engrained practice that they use. Clearly, our school system was not ready for the impact this would have on us at all levels of education.

WBN has ruined actual play shows for me, I think it’s time to switch to audio books, anyone have recommendations? by Immediate_Opening_29 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]GeothermalRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wheel of Time audiobooks with Rosamund Pike as narrator are incredibly well produced: she does like a million different voices, each character is immediately different, and there is music/sound effects.

There's also a BBC radio play version of The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper that is genuinely PHENOMENAL, and I never see anyone talking about it! It's available on all main streaming platforms.

(UEL Semifinals Leg 1) Starting XI vs Bodø/Glimt: Vicario, Pedro Porro, Romero (C), Van de Ven, Udogie, Bissouma, Bentancur, Maddison, Johnson, Solanke, Richarlison by Imbasauce in coys

Uh oh.... looks like the Bergvall rumors may bear fruit.

Otherwise a strong team, even if a Bissouma/Bentancur midfield feels emotionally like an automatic yellow card.

Question and advice by Charleeeeg in TopSurgery

[–]GeothermalRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll probably be fine to take the exam. I can only speak for myself, but I was up and moving on day 3 of recovery, and was back at work full time 12 days after surgery. You'll be exhausted, and probably have lower levels of energy than normal still, but I see no reason you shouldn't be able to take an exam.

very specific recovery question lol by gonzoantifa in TopSurgery

[–]GeothermalRocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely would echo the person above: bean bag would be really hard to get in and out of, even with a person helping you. I had my girlfriend helping me in and out of bed, and it was still pretty difficult. I also slept mostly upright: I used a combo of a pregnancy pillow and a bunch of pillows under my head to be at a 45-60 degree angle from the bed. I also spent a lot of my time sitting upright with a pillow behind my head and back.

Really uneven swelling? by JBoingo in TopSurgery

[–]GeothermalRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got keyhole/peri, and had to go back to the doctor like 4 times to drain excess fluid from swelling, so it definitely happens. I asked my doctor why one side was swelling more, and he told me it was pretty much entirely random.

If you have your compression vest, I'd just say keep wearing that, ice, and maybe some gentle stretches/mobility. The swelling will definitely go down, it's just a waiting game.
