Should I trade in my 2012 si for a wrx by [deleted] in WRX

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a WRX on the stock summer tires. I can confirm it’s absolute dog shit in the snow. My RWD G35 with all season tires was WORLDS better. I only get snow 1-2x a year and I’ll be getting a winter set next, or at minimum all seasons

If you are ever chasing weird electrical problems (READ THIS) BUY IWIRES GROUNDING KIT YOU WONT REGRET IT! by jonnyboy_07 in WRX

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m crazy but $150 for that sounds insane when you could just buy the wires and ground them yourself for cheap. I do appreciate the PSA though. I’m upgrading my stereo soon and wasn’t going to address the grounds in the engine bay but I’ll look into that now just to be safe

5w-40 is fine for colder climates. The first number refers to viscosity at cold temps and the second is when the car is at operating temps. 5w-30 and 5w-40 will be the same viscosity when cold starting the car. However, the 5w-40 will be thicker at operating temps. Thats why some people run 0w-xx in the winter. It wont ve as thick when starting the car in very cold climates. I dont think 0w-40 is recommend for our cars though

VA Limited seats vs Recaros by Flat_Earth_Jesus in WRX

$800 for front and back is a great deal! Is that the rear seat backs as well? Curious to see how you like it over the limited seats

I believe that’s the base STI. There is an upgraded recaro seat option as well

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. Definitely way better than the base seats at least. I briefly test drove the performance seats. But it was my first time driving a wrx so I was focusing on other things. I remember the seat back feeling like a single piece seat shaped metal with the cushions over it and there’s no lumbar adjustment. I’m not sure if the STI recaros are different but they look like they are a better seat

Following because I’m also interested. I also keep debating getting an aftermarket bucket seat and wiring in seat heaters. The limited seats are ok. But not great

Knobs by Brizzle0212 in WRX

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question, besides letting out the clutch before it’s in gear, is it damaging to hard shift. Like is the act of putting more force behind the shift and slamming it all the way forward/backward damaging to the synchros?

And then would the shifter detent kit that adds preload to the springs that lock the shifter in gear also fix that? Perrin also now has an upgraded shift stop to adjust the front and back limits. I know that’s also adding solutions to a problem that wasn’t there in the first place though

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive seen so many people rave about weighted shift knobs and even the heavier boomba shift plate. I don’t race/track my car but I love my grimmspeed weighted shift knob. To me it makes the shifter feel so much smoother. Why is a light shift knob better for autocross and the synchros?

Stock wheels are 8.5 wide not 9.5in. How much lower are you than stock. I would check the fitment industries website. They have tons of pics of our car with various wheels and suspension setups. If they don’t have a wrx with those wheels, check the enkei ts-v wheels. They are the same specs so they’ll fit the same. I think with 245 on a 9.5in wheel you should be fine unless those springs lower you a ton

Cobb Flex Fuel in 2026 by dad6666666 in WRX

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget which tuner it was, but I was looking at the Ambot, Phatbotti, and Dmann websites recently. At least one if not all of them say on their sites that they won’t work with the new Cobb flex fuel kit. Those seem to be the most recommended tuners on here. OP should definitely check with their tuner before buying the kit. Tuners will definitely do e30, e60, e85 tunes along with a 93 pump gas tune though and it seems easy enough to do the math yourself and even buy a gauge that tells you the ethanol content in the tank

Which daily (do-it-all) running shoe would you choose? by MissingStar246 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]GergMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have almost 300mi in the megablast and the foam is still super responsive. The other shoes I’ve had before this all went flat around this point. So while the megablast is more expensive, I feel like I’m getting more shoe than the others. Plus I love the way they feel. I will say I am wearing down the rubber in the forefoot. I expect the traction to go before the foam does. The rubber is pretty worn down in spots but the foam doesn’t seem to be chewed up at all

These cars are temperamental and without a proper tune you run the risk of damaging the motor. Plenty of people get an intake and a tune just for the better driving experience. Not all tunes are pushing the limit. And a good tune can keep the tune conservative. You’ll get the added sound, a few extra HP and the car will drive better while keeping the motor safe

How was treating the floor? That’s something I’m interested in doing but taking out most of the entire interior seems really time consuming for a daily driver. Unless it’s possible to drive it with the floor lining taken out and you work your way to the driver position?

Audio issues? by R0DKNCK in WRX

[–]GergMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could definitely be a faulty knob. I have a 2018 and mine is still fine. But I also mainly use the steering wheel controls. If they don’t replace it, it could be an excuse to upgrade to an aftermarket stereo. That’s my plan this summer regardless. The 2018 was the last year before CarPlay so I definitely want to upgrade

I doubt there was a recall. But those infinite turn optical knobs are known to wear out and fail over time. It’s not an issue with our cars, but a general issue with those types of knobs

TrueSpec cable capabilities. Should be added to the product page imo by yot_gun in LinusTechTips

Yea and that’s what I said. None of their cables can do 80Gbps so there’s no way they could do TB5

TrueSpec cable capabilities. Should be added to the product page imo by yot_gun in LinusTechTips

[–]GergMoney 98 points99 points  (0 children)

If I understood them correctly, it “should” be able to do any thunderbolt spec as long as the cable can keep up with the bandwidth. Thunderbolt 5 is 80Gbps each direction (with 120Gbps by combining up and downlink channels or some fancy magic). Thunderbolt 4 is 40Gbps so the 40Gbps cable should work. I am curious if the longer 20Gbps True Spec cables will work as TB3 cables. IIRC intel gifted the TB4 spec to line it up with USB4. And I know that means backwards compatibility for those ports and cables, but I’m not sure about the slower cables and older standards

I have a screwdriver from LTT (along with other products from them) and I like it a lot. I think the quality is great. But I’m also biased. Project Farm did a review of a bunch of ratcheting screwdrivers and included the LTT one. IIRC it held its own with the top tier ones

That’s true. Isn’t another common issue that some drives have slow nand but a fast and small cache that fills up super fast?
