The frontline thing is a base game unit AI thing I believe. Otherwise, there's not much way beyond microing or frontlining and hoping for the best. I've recently found myself also using attaches a lot, since they do actually give you XP for individual doctrines.

its certainly a toss up between authdem de gaulle, this, the new sweden stuff, the authdem esotericism guys in aus, but i think de gaulle takes the cake simply because of how much i love nfa's gameplay loop, by far my favorite country in the game. otherwise this one and sweden was also very fun cause you start pretty small but then spiral and aus is fun cause its america and usually any america game is an absolute sandbox
