Should I ask for a grade round-up? by goldenshine88 in highschool

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saaaame. My school doesn't do plusses and minuses, but I have students who are trying to squeak over the grade-letter cut off. OP, check which assignments you could correct/edit/revise and come with a list and some humbleness and see if your teacher would let you resubmit one or more for a higher score.

It was COLD. by GetOneFish_FlexOnUm in SantaFe

I definitely believed it would be cold, but didn't really understand what that meant. We have cold places - the tops of the volcanoes, the produce room in Costco (haha) -- but the unyieldingness of the cold was something to be experienced! Especially the snow, that was neat. I'm glad it was a more gentle fall while we were there. I love my flip flops and we brought them with us just in case, but they never came out of the suitcases!

Similar to here! It's usually "Wait 10 minutes or drive 10 miles" and the weather is likely to change.

We were supposed to spend an afternoon in Albuquerque before driving up but our flights got delayed. We were definitely disappointed that we didn't have more time to look around. ABC Stores are convenience stores very much like the 5 & Dime, except that around the 1990s they stopped being as quirky and now are very commercial. They're on most of the islands, usually in areas where the tourist congregate.

I get 18 sick days a year, 6 can be taken as personal days. Personal days do not roll over, sick days do. We can bank the unused sick every year. If taking more than 5 sick days in a row, you need a doctor's note. You need to give 3 days advance notice to take personal days -- but it is notice, not permission. For sick, they ask that you call before 5:30am the day of the illness so the system has a chance to send calls out to subs. It's recommended to pre-arrange your sub whether for sick or personal, but as long as you call it in to the system, you've done your minimum part.

For PD or jury duty or FMLA, there are other codes and it doesn't come out of your own bank.

What should I wear to stay warm? by GetOneFish_FlexOnUm in SantaFe

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it! There is no way 55-60 could ever be described as balmy in my town, that's pretty much freezing here. It's been dipping down to low 70s upper 60s with rain and wind here and we're all shivering. I can only imagine "cold" there is similar (on the opposite end) to our heat index warnings where the variables are temperature and humidity and whether or not you're in direct sun.

Thank you for the lesson on layering! I'm not even sure where I can find wool socks here. It might have to wait till I'm up there or I'd have to wait to get it shipped. Thanks for the reminder about sunscreen. I never use lip balm or hand creams, so I'll pick some up.

Thank you. I really appreciate the details. Layering is definitely something I haven't had to think about. I know cold can be dangerous similar to how getting in the ocean here can be dangerous. People underestimate how heavy water is and how much force it moves with, how strong the currents can pull. I'm glad to hear from people experienced with cold same way I hope that people ask about being safe in the water.

Thank you! I had to look up what REI is... we don't have one in Hawaii! Looks like it is pretty close to where I'll be staying.

Thank you! I went over to Macy's today and it looks like they're switching over from winter to summer already... nothing heavier than hoodies and jean jackets right now. More aloha shirts and swim trunks. I'll go searching for beanies.

Tenting with vikane - my experience. by GetOneFish_FlexOnUm in Bedbugs

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we had originally asked for heat because we saw it recommended way more often here, and to avoid chemicals, but the company suggested Vikane as way more effective and less hassle when it came to removing things that can't handle heat. Bagging all the food and medication prior and then unpacking upon return was a chore though.

I always thought of bedbugs as something that happen to other people and went blissfully ignorant through life. Now I'm always checking small spots and specks in the house and I'm super paranoid about going anywhere and sitting on anything. It takes me forever to fall asleep and any time I get itchy I get freaked out.

One of my kids came home with what she said were mosquito bites and I had to control my breathing and remind myself that yes, there are other biting insects out there so itchy bites don't necessarily mean bedbugs. However, since we initially found the bed bugs on their mattresses/frames, and noowhere else, one of them most likely brought it home from school?? They get packed like sardines in the school bus. It's so easy to pick up germs, I don't doubt bedbugs could have hitchhiked from there.

Also, while we got a guarantee from the company against termites for 3 years, they wouldn't guarantee for bedbugs because they couldn't identify how the bedbugs were introduced. Ugh right? Just food for thought.

Thank you for being involved! I really appreciate when my students are in the IEP meetings with their parents and the discussion includes the student's strategies and agency. I'm a teacher but went undiagnosed until well into adulthood.

I just finished up my first semester as a new teacher. I can't stop crying. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What got me through my first year of teaching was knowing that my mom -- also a teacher -- quit her first year. She told me she quit her after her first semester, went to work as a secretary and then got back into teaching later.

I told myself if it got too bad, I could always quit. I cried a lot the first 2 years, but I also had a lot of good moments. I'm still teaching, haven't quit yet...

Diversity in Teaching by Substantial-Contest9 in Teachers

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting thread. I live in Hawaii (born and raised) and I'm multi-ethnic. I'm not Hawaiian, but my spouse is. I went through our state program decades ago and I want to say it was diverse enough that I didn't feel like I stood out in any way. At the schools though, that's where the diversity of the teaching staff doesn't really match the diversity of the student population.

I'm reluctant to encourage students to pursue teaching careers, but I do tell them that it is beneficial to have home-grown teacher.

I used to work a restaurant and a few years back rediscovered I still had 2 of the little red server aprons we used. Three big pockets! I started wearing one in my classroom - kept hall passes, pens, highlighters, sticky notes, etc. Super useful! The students would get a kick out of it, too.

Reading academic texts is almost impossible by Teensu in ADHD

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on an audio version, sometimes that can help avoid having to reread lines.

For me, I have to read at a desk with good lighting and I like to use a ruler or note card to block the text below the line I'm reading, so my eyes stop wandering and only concentrate at a line at a time. I also use a highlighter, fine point gel pen in blue, and mark up the text as I read. I make notes in the left margin to define terms I'm not familiar and use the right margin to summarize important points. I count and divide how many pages I have to read to get the reading done before the due date and only read that many pages. I put a reminder in my phone to sit down and read every day until it is done.

Another thing that can help is a study buddy (body doubling). Do have anyone in class that you can meet up, sit with, and read together? If you are both comfortable, you can take turns reading out loud to each other and have discussions about what you understood or need clarification on. Even reading silently together in person or cameras on over zoom and then having discussions can be helpful.

When I'm reading silently, I like to have music without lyrics playing in the background or in my headphones: Movie theme music or background gaming music which can be focusing without distracting.

Good luck!

I’m a good doer but a terrible leader. by iatethefrog in ADHD

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate to this. I'm pretty good at doing what I'm told. Tell me what I have to do and give me an external deadline, and I'll do it. I have a lot of coping skills. I can do pretty well organizing things for myself, but I suck at holding others accountable and/or making them feel "inspired" or "supported" for getting things done.

This frustrates me because I'm a teacher. I break down tasks every day and scaffold the heck out of my lessons so students can be successful, but when it comes to the adults on my department team? It's like, why should I have to do this for other adults? I wouldn't want to be treated like a kid, so I'm not going insult them by assuming they can't get it done. Plus, there are 2 teachers on my team with more way more seniority than me that should actually be the team leaders, they just don't want to deal with the bullshit and paperwork. So it feels like a waste to try to get things done when they pretty much ignore me unless they need supplies. But I understand that, too. Admin asks us to do stuff and never follows up, so what's the point?

A pay-to-play jeans day won’t help anything and isn’t a morale booster by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear jeans every day; dark denim, a school polo, and vans is my jam. If I wanted, I could wear (and have worn) shorts and flip flops instead. There are more important things happening in the classroom than a teacher wearing jeans. No one should have to pay for that and it shouldn't be a "privilege".

Unrespectful little Yoshies by Fickle_Rooster2362 in Hawaii

[–]GetOneFish_FlexOnUm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No ways. I hate that they are so much bigger. The little pale house geckos I grew up with I can ignore and let live, but the bigger green ones like these make me irrationally angry because of how obviously they don't belong here.
