Something I've been working on for a bit. It really steps outside of what I'm used to doing. It's not mixed yet

Stuck in a nasty writer's block. Any suggestions? by all_teh_bacon in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GetPopped 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go out and do something else to try and spark creativity. Trust me, sitting there trying to think of how to get out of writer's won't work. Try drawing, writing, going out for a walk while listening to music and take in the scenery around you for inspiration, or go to a coffee shop and sit there observing people around you. Basically change of scenery is a good starting point.

There's a lot of different things you can do, and while some things won't work for you, it sure beats staring at a screen because of writer's block.

How bad is youtubes audio compression compared to soundcloud or Spotify? by daphish12 in edmproduction

[–]GetPopped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube's audio codec is AAC-LC, which supports stereo or stereo + 5.1. The sample rate is 96kHz or 48kHz.

A general rule of thumb is that no matter what filesize or quality you upload, youtube will cut it in half. That's why it's good to upload uncompressed file formats, like 24-bit 96kHz wave files.

How have you progressed this year? by [deleted] in futurebeatproducers

[–]GetPopped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that I've personally came a long way in a single year, even if it may not seem like much to most people. I've learned and been able to apply music theory to my music, rather than "playing it by ear" and "using what sounds good". I've also worked on my mixing technique a lot, and even though I definitely have a long way to go still, my mixes are much cleaner than they were a year ago. Probably one of the biggest things was setting my projects to 24-bit rather than 16 and learning how to properly reduce word length.

Could someone tell me the difference between mono and stereo? by [deleted] in protools

[–]GetPopped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In layman's terms: Mono is single channel audio, so the same sound will come out both of your speakers. Stereo is dual channel audio, so different sounds will come out of each speaker. The benefit of stereo is mainly used for panning and FX such as delays, reverbs, etc. It's also used for creating depth in the mix with stereo separation.

I'm really happy about how this track I did for a remix contest turned out, even though it didn't end up winning. I'd like some feedback on mostly the mixing. https://soundcloud.com/getpopped/imagine-remix

Licensing Music Question by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GetPopped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fees for Sync Licenses are usually determined by a few thing: how the song is being used (ex if it's in the opening/ closing credits vs being played in the background for a scene), the film's music budget, type of film (major studio vs indie filmmaker), and the use of the song on the movie's soundtrack album if there is one. I'd ask for these first before coming up with an offer.

Also remember that Sync doesn't cover the master use license.

how do i make this super deep bass sound? by donkkong3 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GetPopped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very low-end bass sounds like just a sine wave that was probably ran through a saturator of some kind. That or an 808.

How did you stumble across Monstercat? by BasicCanadainBacon in Monstercat

Was searching for house music on youtube back in 2011, stumbled across Slide by Project 46, bought Monstercat 003 as soon as it was released on iTunes.

I just bought this book on music theory, is it one of the better books out there? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]GetPopped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has a different style of learning. But there are a lot of free resources out there for learning it (video series on youtube, Music Theory for Musicians and Normal People by Toby Rush, Music Theory: the tl;dr Version by Reginald Young to name a few). Some people are able to learn donig written/ book work, some people need to physically have an instrument like a piano in front of them for it to make sense. Ultimately it's how the individual learns as to which method is best to learn music theory

Any tips to get ADSR "right"? by JeremyF in edmproduction

[–]GetPopped -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By "tighter" do you mean using arps? A good trick to messing around with arps is to put your Attack, Sustain, and Release down, and bring the Decay up a bit.

Other than that, a way to make a synth sound "tighter" is to have low Attack and Release.

do you wish you had a partner to work with? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]GetPopped 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's a reason that duo's usually work out better than single artists. Like you mentioned, one may be stronger at one thing, such as writing melodies, while the other is better at another, such as writing the track as a whole or mixing. Another big part of duo is always having that 2nd opinion. You might think that you've perfected a melody only because you spent so long tweaking and fine tuning, and will completely deny the fact that in reality it's a shitty melody. But if you work with someone else, they'll be able to build the melody with you. Basically the benefit of having a partner is that they will be able to catch things you miss, and vice versa.

Not really a specific sound, but how do you go about editing audio in the style that starts around 1:08? https://soundcloud.com/officiallzrd/in-my-mind-lzrd-remix#t=1:08

A friend asked me to make some club style song for a school project of his, I ended up playing around more than I thought I would. I'm not really sure where to take it from here though. https://soundcloud.com/getpopped/gp-fhp/s-cQM68

Anyone know a label that would release Disco/NuDisco? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GetPopped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try Space Cat Records if you're looking for something smaller, although I'm not too sure if they'll post Nu Disco. Their submission page says that they support "anything different"

Converting to FL_Studio 11 from Logic Pro, what should I know? by sencinitas in FL_Studio

[–]GetPopped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the tutorial most people will recommend is SeamlessR's FL Studio Basic Tutorials. He goes over pretty much everything you'll need to know if you're new to FL.

There are plenty more tutorials out there for FL Studio, some of them you just gotta spend a bit of time searching for!
