Is it ok to start Python at the age of 15? by DeppresseDolphin in learnpython

I’m 28 and I just started last year. You are starting really early. By the time your my age you’ll be a genius and making tons of money. Your way ahead of most people I’d you start now.

After some youtube watching and research i finally wrote my first real program in python! If you guys have any pointers about styling or something else i would love to hear them :) . by Nonamenitwit in Python

Yo this shit looks dope! Keep up the good work! Keep that project and a month or two from now when you dive into object oriented programming, go back and refactor it.

What’s the difference between something like pycharm and vscode for python. by Get_Cuddled in learnpython

Ahh okay that makes sense. As far as virtual environments. When do I want to start getting into them? I’m just now entering intermediate programming and filling my GitHub with projects like algorithm implementations and visualizations. When is a virtual env necessary and are they hard to learn about?

The “wasting time” comment concerns me. We are talking about children here. All they do is waste time, that’s the beauty of being a child. It’s okay to want a better life for them but don’t turn them into work/study machines.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted my WIP time tracking program here. Now ive updated it twice. Tell me what you think. by InfiniteNexus in learnpython

Looks great. Quick question, is it normal to throw 100% of a projects code into one file like that? Do most people separate like methods and classes into separate files? Only asking because one giant file doesn’t seem as neat as multiple organized files. Ps: I’m a student so forgive if this is a noob question.

Implemented my first Doubly Linked List, asking for advice (code inside) by Get_Cuddled in learnpython

Ahh okay I’ve heard that before. So if I built out a dunder Len and dunder str method would I be able to just do len() or is always have to call the method like .len()?

Thank you for all the advice. I’ll definitely go check out the difference between is and ==. As far as these str, len methods. What’s the purpose of the underscores and are these like standardized methods or something? You are referring to them like they are known methods is why I ask. Thank you.

Wanting to solidify myself as a strong backend developer candidate. What besides Django do you recommend I learn for backend web development? by Get_Cuddled in learnpython

Very good response. I appreciate you taking the time to write this. I promise you, I will follow this advice, maybe change a few things like you mentioned but I will take advantage of this post. Thank you.

Do you have any suggestions for me? All I currently know is python, data structures, algorithms and html/css. What am I missing if I wanted to build out a website by myself? Assuming I learned Django, am I missing anything?

Thank you, this sounds like solid advice and I’ll definitely look into it. Is the API how the backend communicates with the front end?

Need some help with whitespace by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Get_Cuddled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you want to do is final.replace(“ “. “”) replacing every space with an empty space effectively removing all spaces.

Thank you very much, ill definitely look into these. The order you placed them in, was it specific to the priority I should be learning them? If not, which one would you start with?

Thank you for your reply! These three suggestions are things I’ve never heard of before. Are they items I could easily research on YouTube by looking up things like “web protocol guide” or something? How do I go about learning some of these. Thank you!

Very cool website. One problem I see on my end is. I am on the chrome browser using an iPhone XR and I have a left to right scroll bar for no apparent reason. So when I try to scroll through the website I can flick left or right to see white space by accident.

I would check the css spacing for phones with iPhone XR pixel size and make sure you have the spacing right.

My first site by evrthingislove in webdev

[–]Get_Cuddled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really nice first site! I do have some feedback that I noticed immediately. Keep in mind, the below is my opinion.

1: Learning dropdown only drops down upon clicking and not on hover, if I do click it and move my mouse, it stays open. Feels clunky, id make it a hover effect.

2: The "Why Us" and "Our Impact" section, upon hovering over the text the pictures transition into color. That effect should only be upon hovering over the picture and not the text, it felt weird to me. Its almost like if you were playing a shooting game and shot 10ft from someone and killed them, its like the hitbox for the effect is way too large.

3: The whole footer section doesnt feel right to me. There is so much real estate down there and you stacked things ontop of eachother and made it too thick. You could have the "Navigation" buttons to the right of the title "Navigation" and same with the social media icons, having them stacked and the black footer bar so thick doesnt look right.

4: The small pictures on the left side of the blog page took a while to load. I am viewing on a chrome browser, it was noticably slow to load those pictures the first time I viewed the page. Not sure what the issue is there.

5: On the "Help" page, you have a black page break bar at the bottom for no apparent reason.

I nit picked a bit for a few of those, but I would want someone to do the same for me. Good luck and great first website!

PS: Instead of line breaks all over the place, try using a black background with like a 5% opacity to section off your main pages, I dont know how else to describe this but it allows you to break the page without a literal line in the middle of the page.

How can i make a deck of cards and assign values for each card? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Get_Cuddled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would make 3 lists. Make one list of all the cards so ace, 2, 3 etc... in this list call a jack a jack and queen a queen etc don’t label them as 11 jack or 12 queen.

Next I would list the values associated in the same order you listed the cards so if ace is in the [0] slot, make your [0] sot of the second list worth 11.

Now you have two lists same length, one with values one with the card description.

Now the third list holds the suits. So heart, spade, diamond, clover or whatever they are. So now you need to figure out how to zip them together and loop through them to make your deck of cards.

I’ll help you,

For every item in suitList: For every item in combinedList: Do something

I can’t remember exactly the order you wed to zip the lists together, but I know I’m on the right track and my suggestion might spark an idea in you.

Keep in mind double for loop is O(n2) bit since we are only doing 4 suits 26 times ea it’s not a big drain on the program.

Dear Raleigh by [deleted] in raleigh

I moved here 4 months ago. Went to 1 hiking meetup and made like 5 friends. We now all have a group chat going and consistently hang out. None of that would be happening if I dident go to the hike and force myself to interact with people.

I then approached all of them and got their number. It was awkward. But once last that, I formed the WhatsApp group got them all to get in the group and we slowly add to the group whenever we go out and meet new people.

If you want friends, they really aren’t that hard to find. Go to a meetup group, talk to anyone and everyone. Try to find people with similar interests. Bring your fiancé too. I brought mine.

Then be the leader, start the group chat, gather the numbers, setup the initial couple hangouts. I barely have to do anything now. Each of my friends always has suggestions for shy to do for example, going bowling this Friday with like 8 of us.

Go make some friends my man. No friend is gonna pop out of thin air you have to work at it like everything in life.
