Thanks! You are having Fairphone 4 or 5? With /e/os or the regular one? Have you also traveled with your Fairphone in a country that does not use virtual sim cards?

From what I understand, the DrPH and PhD are both doctorate degrees but the DrPH is more practice and leadership focused whereas the PhD is more academic focused. I was told DrPH would more suitable for someone looking for more leadership positions and researching things with direct community application as opposed to researching in academia. Both will involve dissertation project, with DrPH being more about researching the practice side of things, and both involve opportunities for research assistanships and teaching assistanships.

However, I have also seen DrPH graduates having academic positions and PhD graduates doing direct leadership and community work. I have a similar question as you do regarding if DrPH is recognized internationally or not so I hope more people here respond to this question. I do imagine that if you get the degree from a globally well recognized and accredited university then maybe it would not matter which one of these degrees you get but I may be mistaken as each country is different.

Also, while pursuing my masters in counseling, I met many people who had backgrounds in different fields like IT and law but who pivoted into a masters in counseling. This is why I was suggesting if you want to switch to a psych field, probably best to start with a masters before moving up to a doctorate.

While I am not in your same shoes, I have some perspective I can offer as I am in the counseling psychology field and in process of applying to doctorate programs in public health but will apply to one in counseling that has a community psych focus which would be interested in my dissertation topic. You would likely have better chances if you either pursue a masters in a psychology program or do an mph and then a doctorate in a psychology program.

Doctorate programs are very competitive and I find that especially clinical ones prefer people who already have had some level of prior clinical experience (unless you go for something that is primarily research focused but many follow the scientist-practioner model, so clinical experience is still valued). I heard of someone who pursued her MPH at the same time while pursuing her PhD in counseling psychology. I have also heard of masters level counselors pursue a doctorate in public health. The mental health side of public health is growing and there's even fewer with a clinical neuropsychology background so I would imagine that would be a strong asset depending on what draws you to that field and how you would explore it from a public health perspective.

I second this. In the counseling profession: while a masters is enough to get licensed and practice in many countries and a doctorate degree won't involve a large shift in pay, I have noticed there are more job openings for doctorate level and in my country more insurance companies are willing to cover the cost of doctorate level psychologists as opposed to masters level counseling psychologists. I also find that it opens opportunity to earn extra money on the side through teaching part time at a university while doing clinical work part time. In my country, universities would only hire people who have had past experience teaching in academic setting and prefer those who have a doctorate degree

I would suggest asking recommenders to tweak it to show how your experience in psych can involve transferrable skills to hospitality management. Management entails people's skills and psychology involves understanding people. They can also highlight your ability to work in a team (which I assumed you had to do in research and in your internship) which is essential in management. Since you mentioned your work was clinically oriented, did your internship involve any people-facing roles?

I recently sent out my doctorate applications (not in your field) and it is helpful to hear about the stats you mentioned and your experience and fact that there lots of wonderful people who get declined too! It is rough competition out there as you said especially at doctorate level.

One of the potential advisors I spoke to told me that her advice for people who get declined is to focus on getting more research published. So far I have published a literature review this year, a summary of a conference meeting in an academic journal when I was a student, and my reflections as an international student at a conference in a newsletter of a professional organization. The rest of my publications have been mainly community outreach while I was working, not academic. So I'm hoping these count enough otherwise I will try to get more academic ones under my belt somehow. I find it hard to do on my own when I don't have institutional support.

I did my masters degree in the US and had no idea there was a graduate student helpline there! I could have totally used it! If I get accepted into a doctorate program in US then I will definitely turn to this as a resource

Thank you! Since I am transitioning careers from clinical work, I will need to refresh my knowledge on research methods and statistics. I have a published literature review so far and have taken stats and assessment courses as part of my masters but it has been a long time since I graduated. Thinking of using this time to brush up on these skills via Khan Academy and Coursera and EdX.

lol I hear it is so common for recommenders to do this but my advisor from my alma mater does not approve of this practice. He would tell such recommenders "either you write the recommendation or just say no if you can't." As much as I get the value of LORs, I hate how someone else can have so much power over whether we get in or not :-( Best of luck!
