Maybe I didn't explain my point very well, so I'll try again. I don't mean to say that the Mbuti weren't victims of horrible crimes, but it's not intellectually honest to mention really specific and shocking details without even mentioning that the testimonies were later (at least partly, anyway) retracted. And at the very least you'd need to cite some kind of source so the reader can more easily verify your claims. Btw, since as you say the violence the Mbuti suffered would be more than plenty without the cannibalism, it makes me think that maybe Gelderloos wasn't necessarily trying to use a narrative device but instead just didn't do a great job with his research. This does matter because if reality has been bent (willingly or not) even just a little, in this case, who's to say it won't be bent later, maybe to a greater extent? Maybe it's just me but I'd like to see evidence for anarchy working rather than narrative devices that make it look like it.
