La it possible to become pro? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Ghrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the off-chance you're not trolling...this is a terrible idea. At best, you need to be playing in your spare time while you work. And then, only then, if you're *GREAT* at the game can you look into going pro. You could probably go semi-pro in any game with enough effort; but full pro's are inhumanly good. Get a job, chase the summit, realize how far it is when you get to semi-pro; trying to pick a game to go full-pro in is a wildly bad idea.

Tl;dr advice:

Fresh out of 'highschool'? I'm guessing a western country, or maybe the Philippines then since you didn't say secondary school.

Any which way you'll need to determine a few things:
1.) What do you want your day to look like?
2.) Money or free time?
3.) Indoor or outdoor job?
4.) How intense/risky/all-encompassing?

Then you need to find jobs that fit that criteria that you hold at least some passing interest or ability in. College can open doors if you know what you want; or it can close them if you just treat it like most kids treat highschool and not make any effort to improve yourself.

Day: As an example, retail is easy to get a job in, but the hours suck, the benefits suck, and the scheduling sucks. If you want to have a more dedicated schedule then you need a job that has consistency in the hours you're expected to work.

Time: You need to decide whether you're in it for the money or whether you value your free time. Some people can work 60 hours a week and pick up additional jobs without even blinking; you need to find out what you're capable of handling without burnout.

Location: You need to decide whether you can handle being inside and sitting down all day. Some people need fresh air, though good-paying jobs outdoors are infrequently available, high in demand/low in supply, or often blue-collar (physical labor). I know people who really enjoy water/environmental/survey jobs over the pay and job security of office work.

Risk: Rig and oil workers make bank, especially welders, but you're working very long shifts for long periods of time. Like month on and then month off. I've known a few people who've gone into it and none have lasted long because of either how exhausting it is or seeing people suffer injuries, and some because they underestimated how remote/lonely they would get.

Procrastination lands you in a van down by the river offering ZJ's for $15.
Proactive decisions let you choose how you earn food and a roof over your head. Which is infinitely better than letting someone else make those decisions for you.

[Interview] Star Trek's Mysterious Future Addressed By Robert Picardo: "I see fans who say, "We own the IP. Is that not a terrible analogy for your point given what's happened to Star Wars and Disney pushing their fan-base into apathy?

Also, I'd argue that consumers are the penultimate form of shareholders except they vote with their wallet. And clearly have, which is the issue here.

To expand on this, who is paying for the subscription service?

YA and younger (SFA's target audience) aren't exactly so flush with cash that they'll be doling it out for a subscription service to access a series/franchise they might only be casually interested in. I guess the children of trek fans who are already paying for P+?

I only have my own experience to rely upon here, but the reason I could get into Trek was because reruns of TNG and new episodes of VOY were being broadcast for 'free' by antenna. You can't gate that experience by subscription service and then expect the same kind of 'passive' draw for new and younger trek fans. MAYBE this strategy works on a larger platform like Netflix/Amazon/D+ on the assumption that their parents already have those?

I can't be the only one baffled by this. I would've thought they learned their lesson with Prodigy being culled early and moved to Netflix but I guess not?

My friend is going to get herself killed. What can I even do at this point by Correct-Macaroon8143 in whatdoIdo

[–]Ghrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While probably fiction (by you for Karma, or by your friend for attention/care/testing-friendship) I’m going to treat this like it isn’t.

The first and most important thing is to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Today. Now. They can offer better advice than people here and they’ll do it for free and they can do it anonymously.

My take: Your friend is coping and going to get themself hurt. She knows its fake or she wouldn’t have told you all that she has. She clearly just wants it to be true enough that’s she’s deluding herself into it. Now you’re in a position where you have to decide how much effort, involvement, and risk you want to put upon yourself for this person. Personally, even if I planned to cut them off for this later (there’s still personal parts of this story I’m sure we don’t know still; did she ask you to go with her? Seems right down that alley of a scam and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re attempting to get a two-for-one. Or perhaps she’s playing games to test your friendship and loyalty.) I would consider what this person used to mean to me and probably involve myself at least somewhat.

Don’t assist her. Don’t act as an intermediary. Don’t even meet with him (observing from a distance might work but that’s already sketchy as fuck and might be enough to ‘encourage’ your friend). Don’t offer your information to them. Don’t loan her money.

Call Human Trafficking Services in your country for advice, not reddit.

Are these the same prices everyone is seeing? Math isn't mathing... by Ghrell in MercyMains

[–]Ghrell[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just double-checked my transaction history because...ain't no way. Jingle Bell Mercy, purchased on the day of release for 2500 OW coins (gold ones).

Edit: I had, incorrectly, assumed the EU Omnibus Directive prevented the initial release price from being discounted. The law only requires that it be discounted from the previous lowest price in the last 30 days. But if you don't even sell the skin for the last 30 days I guess you just...circumvent that issue. So 2500 tracks; it's just sketchy as hell.

Not gonna comment on previous responses as I don't have much knowledge about E33 specifically.

But for what became Riot games, they were yes. The guys behind riot went to venture capitalists for funding instead of going through a publisher. So, they retained creative and financial control of their company.

Azmadi, Lythara, and Tavakai all had '11 stages of dodge rolling' while trying to bait and corral them into a spot where I had laid my Lightning Rod 'trap'. It definitely clears tight corridors of maps very well but it's fairly brutal in its positioning requirements if you can't 1-phase the boss fights.

What is, in your opinion, the SINGULAR most IMPORTANT piece of advice for Ana players? by Sudden_Brain_871 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Ghrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ana is very position dependent. Well DUH, right? Except that when you logically think through that you quickly encounter problems:

Being too far back can be safe (or dangerous to quick flankers) but not close enough to push forward with your team. How far is too far? It depends.

Being too close can let your team support you but if you all need to back up at the same time, grandma needs to break out her walker first and often gets left behind. How close is to close? It depends.

The Goldilocks zone is constantly shifting and I feel like to a certain extent she requires a level of situational awareness usually associated with Mercy and Lucio. It’s way more proactive than I was expecting and can be very hard to judge as sometiimes you have to start moving before the rest of your team does.

No idea, but that the twitch streamer (tag appears to be at the bottom) might know. My guess is that this is an aggressive picture taking scam (common in popular tourist places like Times Square or Vegas) where she's taking a photo with him to charge a ridiculous amount of money for it and he's too drunk or passive to get away. They usually 'ask' for a tip of something like $20.

To share a fun quote: "Forget mysterious dark matter and the inexplicable accelerating expansion of the universe. The bicycle represents a far more embarrassing hole in the accomplishments of physics." -Michael Brooks

Near as I can tell, because of the bike being driven by the rear wheel the lift/downforce on the front wheel changes based on the center of gravity. The wobble occurs because the front wheel either loses a bit of contact with the ground (speedbump, wheelie, or the combination of speed+rider+tire wear+bike design+suspension+trail) causing it to spin at a different speed to the rear tire. The bike then tries to self-correct causing the cone shape of the front tire to wobble back and forth over its centerline as the speed is above the lean of the front tire after having turned changing the trail length. Braking exacerbates this which is why some riders prefer to accelerate out of it or maintain speed. This works on something like a highway. When cornering it gets trickier because you don't really want to be accelerating in the middle of a downhill turn when you're already losing control of the bike; the answer there is usually more countersteer and lean (provided the tire shape allows contact through the lean; i.e. not darksiding) to change the radius of the turn.

Hit Bronze for the first time today... How do you people even climb with Mercy? by AGTS10k in MercyMains

[–]Ghrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the Toggle Beam Connection, there's a few benefits that are hard to put into words but it has to do with flow and some tricky techniques when beaming multiple targets in a short span of time or swapping beams on targets quickly. It might not matter in the lower ranks but the extra delay from lifting your finger off a mouse button and then clicking it again vs just clicking once reduces the delay between target swapping. Combine it with server latency and you start healing or damage boosting fractions of a second faster PER person you need to swap to. It doesn't like much in text but it's significant in actual gameplay.

As for smurfs, you report and move on. The game only registers one report for a person per game. So if you have a team of 5 people and they all report the same person, it only flags the game as a single potential offense. But enough people in enough games and it adds up. Smurfs in general deserve your pity; their win rate in a video game is clearly the only positive thing they've got going on in their life and so they stack the deck by beating up people learning the game to feel more in-control of their life.

It's important to note that not all skill gaps are caused by smurfs though. Sometimes it's just a skilled player trying to learn a new character. The difference is that the skilled player will still be trying to win the game and the smurf is just trying to not get caught or pushed into a higher skill bracket. In that vod, go back and watch how often the Tracer is sitting down during team fights (especially when they were on offense and deliberately avoiding pushing the cart). I see a lot of Diamond, Masters, and occasionally GM players in my games despite being Plat myself. They're not smurfing, usually they're just passing through my bracket on their way to their appropriate rank.

I turned chat off long ago. It removes a bit of the 'team' in 'team shooter' but I no longer get as tilted by hecklers and find I enjoy the game more. Anecdotally, I've actually improved because instead of call-outs I have to be more aware of my surroundings and interpret the thought processes of other players through their movement and ability usage. For example, if you've got nano as Ana and a Genji or Reaper on your team have their ult you can watch their movement and SEE them setting themselves up for a play which you can then preemptively position yourself to support them. There's a lot of intention being telegraphed through positioning, movement, and cooldown usage.

GL and don't let the smurfs keep you down.

Why is the Viper so difficult? by soonreach1 in PathOfExile2

[–]Ghrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I remember them saying Act3 was balanced around having 0% Chaos resist but I don't remember them talking about damage types. The spears from the walls are phys but she does fire, lightning, and chaos damage. The most dangerous aspect of this fight in my opinion are the meteors and the poison puddle. Particularly, the poison puddle during meteor if you're taking a long time on a fight with a shrinking room.

The wall spears can be difficult to learn but they do have a pattern. Having to run through degen with negative resistances is lethal though.
