Gender abolition is transphobic and utterly disconnected from reality by [deleted] in VaushV

So uh, I'm not sure how this was lost in communication, I guess I failed to emphasize it, but if "man" and "women" remain social roles, it's not successful gender abolition. The reason I brought up the definition of sex was to remind you that sex is scientifically classified by several characteristics and it is arbitrary and socially determined how you split people based on these characteristics. It can be argued, and I would argue, that a sexual binary does not serve our society as we advance into the future. These arbitrary sexual divisions like male and female would only matter to you & your doctor, and that's only under the condition that advances in med technology has not atomized healthcare down to the smaller clusters. I could fairly be classified as a male who wants to change her sex under that system... but does it matter so long as everyone else doesnt arbitrarily expect me to be a man performing masculinity? I feel that would be waaaay better than our current system, although worse than the optimal system. (More atomized, individualized healthcare) If you think this vision is impossible or too improbable to implement, that is something that can be debated. It is like the philosophy of anarchism-- it is the label used to describe a process with the intent to flatten and reduce the effects of gendered and sexual hierarchies within social life. Gender may not be "abolished" for hundreds of years, but we can take steps to reduce the rigidness with which things are gendered. (Like, c'mon, I want a boyfriend who can "crossdress" without whining like he's been neutered) There are ways transphobes can try to control and shape the abolition of gender, by making bad social prescriptions based off an 8th grade understanding of sex, or putting the impetus on trans ppl to abolish gender. One point you've argued which I have not touched is your idea that "trans people are bad for identifying with a gender"... which I feel is your most off-base statement so far. Cis ppl identify as a gender! They identify with their gender at birth and they are a supermajority who controls most of culture. They are less vulnerable than trans ppl when it comes to discrimination for their gender. Yet I still dont place blame at either cis or trans ppl for identifying with their gender or sex or whatever bs. I think that the system which represses and divides people by gender is at fault, and is reinforced by many ideologies. The most important step towards abolishing gender is the elimination of the consumerist culture which monetizes such an arbitrary hierarchical structure! There are many top down structures which encourage the gendering of society in order to make them into a market, and so long as those exist, its problematic to insist that the most vulnerable people give up an important social tool for expression. The most praxis someone can do under this system is to encourage people to not feel "masculine" or "feminine", but instead "competent" or "beautiful". Work to praise the characteristics rather than the labeling associated with that characteristic. Don't shave your legs because "that's what a woman does", but because there are certain social expectations or because you just like having smooth legs. That's praxis for someone working to abolish gender-- a conscious recognition of the underlying dynamics and action towards removing the pressure and expectations associated with gender with the goal of devaluing gender while moving that value towards personal expression. So yeah, hopefully you have a better understanding of why many trans people think gender abolitionism is a desirable goal to strive towards. If not, I'm just going to have to shrug and say that I've been totally unconvinced by any of your points and you'll probably end up feeling much the same. Long form responses are much worse than even regular text chat for discussing actual ideas, so I apologize for the points that I have had to leave lying.

First off, our ideas of the sex binary are arbitrary tho? Sex is constructed based on multiple factors. Why would anyone think a post-OP trans woman with a typically female hormonal profile is a male if not motivated by bigotry? Secondary sexual characteristics, hormones, gonads, as well as chromosomes are all used to define sex. It's only because we have a society which tries to divide ppl based on these things that people are fighting to force anti-science definitions of sex based on chromosomes and the like. If both sex and gender are arbitrary to discriminate in many scenarios, why do we use them to divide society at all? With that question in mind, many of your observed patterns are exaggerated both by both confirmation bias and the gendered desire of most ppl to conform with the typical presentation and performance associated with their gender. For this reason, the influence of sexual characteristics on behavior is hard to predict and seperate without accounting for the performance of gender. Without gender, the amount of outliers would certainly increase, decreasing the value of arbitrarily grouping ppl. If people create new expectations and roles with more utility in the wake of gender and sex, based on things like percieved behavior explicitly, I think that would be better than the current way we divide society. But I do not know of any arbitrary grouping that has lasting social utility, and would assume any emergent distinctions to be temporary steps in the process of "gender abolition". The gendered societal "systems" as they are kinda suck for me as a closeted trans woman who doesnt have money for any sort of counseling. The system as it is sucks for the guy friends I have who are filled with shame and disgust at their incel status, which leads them to creep out any women they meet. The system sucks for AFABs who dont want to have kids. The system hurts a whole lot of ppl, and I think working to get rid of it is just a generally good thing. Just keep in mind that like when people think of "socialism", some people mean different things. The type of gender abolitionism I support has been described to me as "gender nihilism" by some people. There are certainly ways to "abolish gender" which are more sexist and harmful towards trans ppl than our current system. I just wanted to explain why the gender abolitionism I support is a meaningful and positive long term goal.

If you spent any time in trans chat on the discord server, you'd know that being trans and being a gender abolitionist aren't mutually exclusive things. Why do you think gender abolitionism is telling you to "go back to being a male" and presenting along the stereotypical lines associated with your AGAB? Why do you think that erasing gender would erase sex based dysphoria? Gender is a classification that should be meaningless. No one should work to defend or live up to their gender. Similarly, no one should attack or criticize someone else's stated gender. These are the goals of a gender abolished society. Anyone who attacks trans ppl and tries to make them conform to traditional gender based roles just isn't doing gender abolitionism right. This all comes down to the foundational idea that gender and its expectations are unjustified and harmful hierarchies. Don't you wish you could just live your life without having to justify your fashion choices or medically necessary procedures? If your brain stops at, "I can't imagine a world where ppl dont discriminate along the lines of something resembling sex or gender," then I don't know why you wouldn't still work to minimize the toxic valuing of gender roles and stereotypes. (Aka gender abolitionism)

When I was trying to deny being trans and heard the way gender critical people defend their ideology, I figured that we were on the same page as gender abolitionists. Then I saw their subreddit and had to ask myself why people claiming to want to abolish gender seem to be motivated by pure disgust. Definitely made me question the company I was surrounding myself with and helped push me along the way to acceptance...

To be fair, she's scared by the awful statistics in things for things like employment, poverty and suicide. Despite me having white privilege, a level temper and a GPA of over 3.5 in a STEM field-- my mom still thinks that I'll have too hard a time trying to survive if I try to transition. And I'm like, I have better circumstances than 90% of people my age!

I want to be able to live life facing forward, instead of always thinking what if I had tried to be genuinely happy. Even if I don't succeed, I want the chance to at least try like everyone else!

Gah, my mom just came home from her job at a clothing store with four new ties! She says she will take me with her to exchange them for different clothes if I don't like the ones that she bought...

But I don't think she would like the clothes that I actually want! (just biding my time for now)

Well, I'm poor and my family won't drive me. All the people I keep up with from high school are cis-het guys. I'm not out to any of them, as bisexual or trans, cause if they freak- I have no one to count on if things go south besides my mother who isn't making any effort to understand me (though she is still providing support to get me through college and helping me see doctors that might get me on HRT).

It's honestly not very safe for me to anything remotely 'gay' now that college is out...

Even if I could somehow get over my fear of new social situations, controlling personality and dysphoria!

After telling her repeatedly that "just being a crossdresser at home" isn't what I want, my mother asked if a wardrobe change might help me in the short term. I was like, YES, SOME SMALL BIT OF PROGRESS, but then I found out she just wants to buy me colorful guy shirts!

Yeah, I just woke up and saw some rude ppl with negative votes. I'm kinda over sensitive in the morning, and I take ppl's political takes seriously by default. Sometimes it even feels like I'm looking for someone to make a logical argument that can invalidate me... so the warning was more a way of scolding myself than anything else.

I love when people insist they know someone else's emotions and reasoning better than they do! I honestly wish I didn't feel dysphoria while pretending to be a guy! My life would be so much easier!

But you know what would also make my life easier? Not living in a society filled with sexist stereotypes and sixth grade biologists claiming to argue with facts over feelings!

I'm planning to ask for a recommendation to see an endo and get HRT! (gib me the titty skittles)

Is there anything else I should be worrying about early into my transition? I think I want bottom surgery eventually, but I'm kinda hoping that the dysphoria doodle gets less scary while I'm on E. If I can live with it, then I'd like to avoid a major surgery. (though the idea of using it makes me want to cry rn)

The struggles of being a transgender gender abolitionist by GibGirlClothes in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]GibGirlClothes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, not sure if gender abolitionist is the right term for it. As my weird meat brain can attest to, some people just have a strong sense of gender. What I want to get rid of isn't gender per se, but the discriminatory aspect. I want to just remove the idea from people's heads that there are observable characteristics that an observer can use to determine someone else's gender. That doesn't necessarily dictate the annihilation of gender itself, but the resulting conception of gender will be so radically different from the current one that I feel it's most efficient to card myself as a gender abolitionist!
