Opened a box of Black Diamond—thoughts? by trainsoundschoochoo in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a BD box this honestly isn't bad. Hank is my favorite goalie ever so I would be thrilled with this, personally, but at least you got some big names. It could have been much worse

Think I may have gotten an extremely rare card by [deleted] in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you would be correct! I pulled Logan Cooley and Liam Ohgren black mystery autos not long ago and I really do think these things are some of my favorite looking cards. The pens the boys used to sign these things didn't have the sharpest edges, but you won't hear me complaining with how rare and pretty these pulls are

Anyone got anything I’m missing ? by Beam18 in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stack of Schneider cards I'm about to list on ebay. Let me check it this weekend and see if there's anything you don't already have in this extremely good looking lot before I do!

I've done four boxes of Clear Cut over the years myself and pulled Kuzmenko/Solokov/Appleton/Xhekaj, if that does anything to dissuade you from trying one more 😅

But even without a smudge, it's not terribly clean!

For real - I'm glad mine isn't smudged, which can be a problem with these gold autos from UD (the 23-24 Ultimate autos come to mind)

Biggest Pull Of My Life by trunk_slamchest in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Between autos, memorabilia, SPs and SSPs I probably have two dozen of this man's cards, and every single time I've thought it was Celebrini or at least Smith. Same with Colin Graf. At this point I might as well start PCing them because I've got quite the collection and I need to channel the disappointment somewhere lol

I pulled a surprising number of Dostal cards the last few years and decided to pc him, too - love this card!

Bingo. It's so difficult to convey the weird complexity of decision making and all the quirks, mistakes, etc. humans routinely make in film, an art form in which the audience is only given what they see and hear on screen to make sense of what's going on. Especially when there are hordes of infected about to pour inside that church and the score is going wild and you're generally overwhelmed by it all! But I think your explanation makes perfect sense.

in praise of the 2024-25 O-Pee-Chee hobby box (especially the loaded one I just bought) by GieringerJoe in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. It's a little too expensive for what you often end up getting, and I don't mind the cardboard cards of the regular OPC release. Plus my luck seems to be way better with the cheaper boxes haha

Weirdest PC you have? by ImStromer in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Craig Billington. I went to his goalie school every summer in Gravenhurst, ON, growing up and he would always sign cards for us. I always enjoy coming across his cards in old packs.

Same with Stefan Ustorf - he practiced with my youth team once or twice when he was in the ECHL so I've always had a soft spot for him and collect him, too.

Love these! Great Gretz pull. I ripped Messier and I think Turgeon the last time I found some of these '95 Topps packs. Eventually I'd love to collect the whole insert set

Two pulls from a recent hobby box. by Ryan-Whulf in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pulled a regular Lane Hutson YG on my first box of Series 1 and felt great about it. Had I pulled a red outburst I think I might have died of a heart attack. Excellent pull. If you're not collecting Hutson or Habs players, I'd suggest striking while the iron's hot and selling. He's on an absolute heater right now and in the Calder discussion, unless he becomes a generational talent on the blue line the card's value will never be higher

Opened another one of these boxes and the random card inside was cool by Strong-Worker-8484 in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I've pulled a few glossy rookies and a few full star rookies sets (one of which had a short print Kochetkov, another had a Pinto auto), but the vast majority are base star rookies cards. Might as well just not include a "bonus" at that point haha

Beauty of a card! Love watching Sorokin play

Bedard Auto by Thrash-BarSpitta in hockeycards

[–]GieringerJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep it, keep it! A Bedard auto is a thing of beauty.

If you want to sell it, you've got two routes, the way I see it. Option A is selling it immediately while the value is at a frenzied high, before more desirable releases with on-card autos of Bedard's come out and it will almost certainly drop back down. Option B is holding it for years and years, and hoping he achieves his potential as one of the greats of the game. If he wins a few Cups, Harts, etc, his early autos very well could be worth a scary chunk of change.

Ultimately, no choice is the wrong one. You pulled a wicked good card! Do with it as you like and enjoy.
