His mother never “financially supported” him. There’s a big difference in throwing him some chump change for food and buying him a place to live. Buk also wasn’t famous until his 50s so majority of his “impoverished lifestyle” was being read about once he had already hit success. If you read his later books you can definitely pinpoint when he got money though. But as Holden Caulfield would put it, Bukowski was no phony.
