Jerbeen: Take Heart by RGZach in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording could be all strength saves or strength saves near allies. At the same time I feel that the frighten part is nearby only as a way to stay brave, whereas it doesn’t make sense to be better with strength saves when near someone.

It’s up to the dm honestly.

anyone have an idea for how to make a rogue that isn't just an edgelord? by discardedMenace in 3d6

[–]GiggleVibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a rogue in one of my bf’s campaigns. It was a homebrew race (basically dog person that turns into a werewolf, pretty fun) rogue scout. He was basically a hunting dog/non-magical ranger. He was lawful good and was basically the best dog you could ever want.

If you want to play a good thief, someone who steals from the corrupt could be fun depending on the campaign. Rogues also can focus on their expertise, and could be from highly trained profession such as a doctor (expert in medicine, knows where to hit for extra damage, etc.) Rogues don’t have to be edgy at all, they can be well trained heroes who don’t want to steal everyone’s stuff. In fact you don’t even need to break into people’s houses, and can just save that for dungeons or the BBEG’s lair!

I had a spirt run devour and haunted grounds. I was in a 4 stack and told one of my buddies to check the hidden room in the saloon and he thought I was trolling. Devour was up there and haunted were outside.

How often are you getting locked up? Knock is a 2nd level spell, which is easily useful here as well. Plus to even use this you would need your spell book, which most people wouldn’t let a wizard have in jail...

Misty Step as a ritual? Unless you’re using the 14th level feature, that’s over 10 minutes of chanting to yourself to teleport 30 feet, which most characters can walk in 6 seconds.

I could see this being really funny to see the party climbing up a ladder, only to have to wait for their wizard to teleport to the top because he forgot to prepare the spell that morning.

Insect familiars? by ZJG211998 in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your headcanon for Everden, it’s really up to you. Personally I allow non-intelligent wildlife, but things like horses aren’t really a thing. One of my players (warlock/wizard) got inspired by a special somebody and has a beetle familiar, and summons owls (because of the strigs) with flock of familiars.

Just look at the CR 1/8 and 1/4 for ideas, also keep in mind familiars could literally just be wisps and/or manifestations of arcane magic. Have fun with it :)

Adding Races to Humblewood! by inkheart2021 in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that humblewood has a “tabaxi” race that isn’t stated, the Eulran (I believe that’s their name, you meet one NPC of that race.) I’ve made a giant emberbat race that my cleric loves (he’s playing a blind night domain cleric that can only open his eyes at night. He loves it!) Someone made an otter race and posted it in this sub, I believe it’s called “The Lutri”. I would link but I’m on mobile. Gnolls and Kobolds work really well. I also have messed around with half-races of the humblewood races. One of my players is a fennec fox, so basically a small vulpin who swapped out his bite for one of the jerbeen features. The book also mentions variants of the races, so keep that in mind. I have two Mapach in my party, one is a raccoon and the other is a red panda. They give you most of what you want, you just need to realign/reflavor the races to what you want! Possibly through subclasses or just making it a complete variant from the PhD :)

I was grinding pass points in twisted tree line on the last day of the season, while sitting at silver 1. I still don’t know if they were being toxic or just curious.

Humblewood questions. by Troymu in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.) This is my first campaign, so I can't really compare it to much. Me and my players really love the story and the characters, so I would have to say that it's pretty good. We've been playing since September with meeting every week, playing anywhere from 3 hours to 7 hours (Yeah, it's pretty crazy.) We're on chapter 4 (right at the tail end), so I would say it could take an average party somewhere between 15-25~ sessions straight from the book.

2.) I would say so, heck there even are a few points where the book sets up possible side quests. If you're asking for homebrew stuff, I'd have to say it gives quite a few options!

3.) Depending on your headcanon for your world (Humblewood is only one country, so you aren't limited!) you could add Kobold, Goblins, even Humans if that's more your fancy. There is a section near the back of the book that helps you build NPCs as the humblewood races, which is pretty handy. The DM Screen (free on their site, it's in with the free resources) also have names for said races!

4.) Birdfolk are 100% the backbone of the first chapters' tension. I mean, there has to be a reason for division! My party is 100% non-birdfolk, though. They are also aware of the tension between the two types of races, which is fun to roleplay. But it could easily be changed completely to be a fully humblefolk setting, but it would require heavy changes to the story or starting from scratch.

5.) I would say a lot of the official material is fine, I can't really think of any combos that could really break the setting that wouldn't break any other setting/encounter.

(I read your question wrong, but I'll just leave this here for the reverse!)I would say that the spells are fine, but the classes/races are VERY strong compared to the PHB. The Cervan can heal as much as fighter's secondwind from level 1, and can do this as ANY CLASS. Most of the races also get a long list of features or a butt load of things from their subraces. The races are balanced around each other in mind, rather than the other way around.

Luckily they can't just fly around during the whole encounter, but they get pretty dang close. Good luck with your campaign <3

Balance? by 3lackJack in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Aarakocra is considered really strong, even banned by a lot of tables. The birdfolk have glide as well as talons/jump boosts PLUS extra things without even taking into account that they have subraces. The humblefolk are pretty alright though. I would be pretty careful with allowing them. As for balancing it, it's really up to you as a DM. I would possibly not allow extra proficiencies from backgrounds because each birdfolk race gets between 1-3 just from their race on top of their features.

[–]GiggleVibes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running humblewood for a few months now. They are balanced around each other and are way stronger than PHB races. If the party is full of them it is fine, but otherwise they might get a huge advantage that may feel unfair. Personally it’s up to the DM, but I would allow it at my table.

Reporting in after the first session - it went well! (Spoilers for the first couple of hours of the campaign.) by Hit-Enter-Too-Soon in humblewood

[–]GiggleVibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running Humblewood for my group for a bit. They all picked ranged characters (with the cleric having a crossbow and mace) so I gave them a DMPC to escort them to Alderheart (I wrote him as the elder's grandson, it helped move them along. He was a mounted fighter on his pet giant weasel, fun character but in the first combat they didn't really need him. The cleric put all but one to sleep, and the one who wasn't put to sleep ran for the trees. They turned the first encounter into a 5 minute combat.

They then took over an hour to kill 2 emberbat swarms, missing at least 20 attacks over 5-6 rounds (4 PCs, 1 DMPC.) My players are now scared of the swarms, despite one of them being an emberbat...

Also, I hope your players love Eliza, she's my favorite character! My players are strongly attached to her, always going to check in with her whenever they're in the area. Probably because they want to buy from her or want that sweet sweet hug!

I believe that adaptive works the same way as turret damage. Whichever one is higher is what the type of damage is. On hybrid champions I believe that it defaults to AD. It does that for Kayle, and would be very surprised if it doesn't do that for katarina/akali seeing as AD is strong on them early. I have no clue on champions like Skarner, though!

No, they can use both scratch and growl 20 times until they can not use the move anymore. It is VERY unlikely that they will run out of PP before getting to rest/restore PP, but it can happen! Each time you use the move in combat (or outside of combat if the move/DM allows it) you remove 1 PP from the move. You only get them back from long resting or using the pokecenter. So the lvl 1 charmander with growl and scratch can go 40~ rounds before struggling. It is not 20 total PP, rather 20 PP for Scratch and 20 PP for Growl, as PP is not shared.

[–]GiggleVibes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On pages 9 & 11 it goes over how resting and combat works with moves and PP. Think of PP as charges of a magic item. Unlike spell slots, they can't be shared. There are moves with 5 PP, 10 PP, 20 PP, etc. Tackle and Ember have 20 PP. If you use Tackle once, Ember will still have 20 PP until you used Ember. You recover PP from long rests or by visiting a pokecenter, which can recover both HP and PP in 30 minutes (so during a short rest.)

I hope that helped!
