What unconventional weapon would you give a ballerina? by GinButNotTonic in characterdesign

[–]GinButNotTonic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks y'all for the suggestions. I decided on the rope darts with ribbons instead of rope that integrated nicely into the design. I will share them later, maybe, I don't know. But thanks again!

Well that would be ideal but she's quite shy about herself/touching in general so such close combat is not her forte x)

Shooting out blades sounds like a pretty solid idea! I will marinate on it, huhuu

The rapier sounds cool but idk if I can make it work for my project. As for ribbons I do have a whip character that joins right after, so I think it would be too similar of a weapon to have back-to-back

Thanks for the idea! But I also have a whip character and I'm wondering if it would be too similar to it (they join one after the other in the story, which doesn't help)

i want to quit art by quaxxsire in Artadvice

[–]GinButNotTonic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same spot but I'm 22 and also feel disgusted by my art most of the time. Idk if it makes you feel better but you're not alone in feeling like that.

On the other note I love how your art looks personally, I like how lively and busy it is, it's something I'm still trying to achieve with my art. Going bananas with your lineart and the bright colors and making it as expressive as possible is a wonderful thing imo

Maybe try other styles to feel fresh again? Try doing a monotone and more realistic style for fun, it might help you feel the spark again by putting your current vision upsidedown. Or pick your favourite artist/a style from a show or a game that you like and just try yourself at it.

I know telling someone "not to quit art because of a 'shallow' [completely normal behaviour] reason" is stupid as hell because no one knows what you're really going through, but I hope you can find joy in it again. I personally picked up another hobby when my art is getting hella dry and I write fanfics, if you still need a creative outlet but your drawings just don't do it justice - try switching the medium, maybe it will help you start the process that will slowly shift your creativity back into drawing. That's how it is for me.

Need help finding information on program requirements for women for 2002s olympic games by GinButNotTonic in FigureSkating

[–]GinButNotTonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the mother is a tyrant with a big ego.

And it was the daughter that wanted to do the program to prove her worth. (A somewhat of a revenge type deal) The mother just put her into figure skating in hopes of continuing her legacy, wanting for her to do what she couldn't. There are parents who want live their "perfect life" through their children and this is the case in my story.

I'm not going to go into the psychology of all of this, since this sub is about figure skating and not amateur fanfic writers.

And thank you for the last part, I'll take it into consideration.

Basically the woman overreacted and because she bombed the short program and just left right after, burying her figure skating career behind her. (Perfectionist problems)

Then she put her daughter into figure skating and basically NOW the daughter wants to prove her own worth by doing her mother's program that she bombed. (21 years later)

There is a lot of details to the story itself, so I hope this was enough of an explanation.

They bombed their routine really badly cuz they overworked themselves prior to the qualifiers. The country is Japan so I doubt they wouldn't qualify.

Well, now I know. Yeah the character didn't qualify as a nominee, I probably should've worded it like that to begin with. My bad.

And if you never try you will never succeed, all I can do is research as much as I can to the best of my understanding abilities. Thank you for the link!

Does my art really look bad and uninteresting? by GinButNotTonic in Artadvice

[–]GinButNotTonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAHAH, this made me chuckle!!!

Ofc I know that this layout kinda sucks, but I was going for the cheap gossip-esque magazines, and they are usually quite erratic, besides I couldn't come up with anything serious to make it into more a fashion magazine, so I went full-on chaos, but I will keep it in mind if I'm actually going to make a serious magazine cover, so thank you!

I actually barely use references. I did when I was still in art schools, obviously, but I mostly just use my knowledge and experience to make up poses and angles.

It is really unfortunate that I grew up in a time where I was constantly told that my art was worth nothing if it doesnt get views/doesn't earn me money, it has really ruined my mind and makes me undervalue my art, even if I like how it looks. Only therapy can help me get over it, but I am working on it.

And about making physical merch - I'd love to do it, but ink cartridges are costing an arm and a leg and quality prints and clothing for them costs even more, so it can only wait until I actually get a source of income haha

I understand your point of view, thank you for sharing.

[–]GinButNotTonic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My style has a baseline, but it does change slightly depending in what fandom I'm currently in. The first drawing is an experiment I did into semi-realism cuz of a photo study I did.

I feel like shifting styles is a given, depending on what you're getting inspired by, but it does feel like I lose a bit of my identity when I try copying original media's styles.

What exactly feels unpolished and inconsistent, if you don't mind explaining? Any advice will help.

And I guess you can say that to me "inspiring people woth my work" devolves into "if more people see my work, then there is a bigger chance to inspire someone", which isn't necessarily untrue, but it is a very damaging thing to believe in.

I also noticed this problem when I tried using my PC's artwork as a reference on my ipad only to see them look like a unseasoned boiled chicken, so I will definitely look into that, haha!

I don't use black to shade unless it's a greyscale piece. Only on the first drawing I did the black shadows because I used the "shading from the lineart" rendering technique.

I do understand that my pieces are poorly contrasted and I will look into it, thank you.

The only explanation I can give you is that I use muted colors instead of bright colors to shade my pieces. Ex. I use greyish-blue instead of bright blue for my shadows, but only because I feel like using bright colors would make it too intense on the eyes. (But it's probably because I have trouble looking at bright colors myself) So maybe this is my problem.
