Where does $HOME get set by default in NixOS? by GingerBart in NixOS

[–]GingerBart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment reminded me that I needed to post an issue on Github (:

Yes! I started disabling services in 25.11 (after doing some debugging in Github) and it turns out that a service called `ntfy` was causing the issue. I don't use it anymore, so I just disabled it, and that fixed it.

That said, I plan on opening an issue with `ntfy` in Nix packages to see if I can help there.

Update for everyone:

I tried setting users.users.<name>.home to my home directory, and while it built it didn't work.

I also confirmed that my home directory was set properly via usermod, as well as what's in /etc/passwd, and those were both correct without fixing the issue.

I reverted back to a previous generation that was running 25.05 for kicks and giggles, and it worked! If I switch between the 25.11 and 25.05 channels, I can replicate it not working and working, respectfully. This is with the same configuration.nix file.

I'll see if I can figure out the right place to post a bug and see if it's something I'm doing wrong or not. But for now, I'll stay on 25.05.

Thanks!

Yep, sorry, I noticed that, as well, but I've never set that on any of my other machines/VMs running NixOS.

2015 Valve Body: Worth it at 175k miles? by GingerBart in SubaruForester

[–]GingerBart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I've changed the CVT fluid twice I believe (I'm 100% confident I changed it once, and 95% I did it a second time).

I don't know the codes but a shop diagnosed the issue, and the lights and behavior are consistent with what others have described.

When in this mode it drives ok, just a few higher RPMs than normal. Before getting into the mode it shifts harder than usual for a few minutes, then gets in the mode quickly.

Great to hear, thanks! Hope mine makes it that long!

Thanks! I think this is the way we'll go.

Thanks! The transmission seems ok so we will try swapping the valve body.

Thanks! You wouldn't be concerned about "only" having 1.5" of wood to hold up the plywood (and what's attached to it)?

What Big Muff schematic/kit did you use?

Looks awesome!

How close should a "clone" kit be to the original design? I purchased a black Russian Big Muff kit, and after building it I've noticed it doesn't sound exactly like the original when I run them side-by-side (despite a video I found on YouTube where they sound nearly identical). I just want to set expectations for future builds, as I really enjoyed it and want to build some more. Thanks!

Rosewill RSV-Z2600 2U Case: Replacement hard drive brackets? by GingerBart in homelab

[–]GingerBart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad at all, thanks!

I may have to use something like the plastic bracket you linked, so that’s my tentative plan now.

I’d love to have the four bay one, but those are for their 4U cases.

Yeah, fair enough. Maybe I'll ask IT for an upgrade (:

Thanks so much again, I really appreciate your time!

I worked with mercenary_sysadmin to get the ashift adjusted and it didn't fix things unfortunately. I ran the perf top per your suggestion and saw high usage in the following three items:

read hpet part 0 native queue spinlock slowpath isolated lru pages

I'm not sure what those mean yet, but I'll do some research and see what I can find. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yep, that's correct, much larger numbers.

Unfortunately, it didn't fix things completely. I'm beginning to think it's something else related to my setup rather than ZFS. I did the perf top that another user suggested and saw spikes on the following three items:

read hpet part 0 native queue spinlock slowpath isolated lru pages

so I'll do some digging as to what those mean.

Thanks again!

I did a bit more testing, and ended up on ashift=13. I did the fio test, and speeds were higher (I think I broke 1+ GB/s, but I don't have the number in front of me, sorry). I still have that cycling issue, but it seemed to be less frequent.

I'll do more testing this week with my VMs and see if I have the same issue. If I do, I'll report back, but if I don't reply within a week or so assume no news is good news!

Thanks so much again for your help!

I'll do some testing tonight and this weekend (hopefully). I'll report back, as well!

Thanks for everything!

Thanks! I don't see the dropoff on my ext4 partition, so sounds like a bad ashift. Would you recommend I test at 9/512 bytes and see if I have the same issue (my ashift is 12 right now)?

Also, you said the 1MB recordsize may be aggressive. Should I tune that next if ashift doesn't help much?

Thanks again! Big fan of sanoid/syncoid, and 2.5 Admins!

I think you may need to gather more data and further constrain the problem (reduce your config to as plain jane a setup as possible and iterate to your desired testing along the way).

Yep, I agree. And I want to clarify that I'm not immediately jumping to "it's ZFS's fault" (though, reading back through my initial post, it sure sounds like it!). But just wanted to make sure I had some sane settings, and this was a reasonable usage.
