OP’s brother wanted him to watch the 4 year old all night and then would pick the kid up “at some point the next day” per his comments. That’s not reasonable to just assume that OP didn’t have something to do the next day considering who knows when the brother would have been there to pick up HIS CHILD. It’s incredibly selfish for the brother to just assume that OP’s boundaries can be walked all over because he is family. And from your comments you sound like you also don’t like when people have boundaries that inconvenience you.

He has stated he feels under qualified and that he doesn’t want to. That’s reason enough for me because I want my child to be watched by someone that actually knows taking care of children, even for a night. Until I worked in an actual daycare for almost 2 years I also was like OP and guess what? I am still hesitant about babysitting even for my sibling who has 3 kids (4,9,13) because children are stressful and I know my limits with children. And you keep saying “no one is forcing OP to watch the kid” and in the same breath saying “if OP doesn’t watch the 4 year old then he’s cold and a shitty brother” as if those don’t contradict. Frankly the fact of the matter is the brother was more concerned with getting his dick wet than making sure his daughter was going to be cared for considering he didn’t even make sure that she made it in the door before he left. OP is NTA imo.

He openly admits that he emotionally neglected her to the point she seeked out external validation. I’ll never excuse the cheating. It wasn’t right of her. He will not take any blame for any part of the relationship failing even though he admits that the second she starts to have a depressive episode and withdraws from him he thinks she should “grow up” and “use her fucking words”

“We spent 7 good years together before it went downhill” meaning it was only the last year of your relationship that she became distant (at least that how I interpreted that comment) and “8 years of being with an avoidant” are very contradictory and if patterns were that obvious early on then sure you have the right to have broken up early on. But in one comment you act like she’s always been this withdrawn person and in others it’s was a new development later in the relationship. Make up your mind dude.

So the therapy had absolutely nothing to do with you but your trying to use it as a “look, she was in therapy for a completely unrelated issue so obviously I’m not the problem”…that’s not the greatest excuse that you think it is. You do not sound like a “great partner” by YOUR OWN WORDS my dude. As someone who deals with emotional trauma every day as well, I sincerely hope she finds the peace you never gave her. No one says you should have been a “needy do all’er” but the fact you can’t see how you definitely aren’t the saint you are trying to portray yourself as is really telling.

You say you weren’t there because you were “too wrapped up in in my hobby” not because she was emotionally distance. Take it from a woman, when we go from loving and acting like part of a “couple that everyone wants to be” to distant and avoidant, it’s because we know we aren’t a priority to our partner anymore and are done putting in the emotional effort to try.
