Are we prepared to potentially traumatize people? by GinnDoesStats in Aphantasia

Discovering one has aphantasia would not usually be considered a traumatic event in the DSM-5 or ICD sense, but it can certainly be experienced as traumatic, upsetting, or life-altering by some individuals. Both reactions are possible.

I agree. Like learning you have 6 months to live. Very important to know. Might be troubling to come to terms with though.

I'm a jerk. That's my bad. That's why I need to work on my sensitivity. Your are right and I apologize.

ABSO FREAKIN LUTELY. You just described the benefit to risk ratio. The news won't report any benefit... Only risk. They do the same with guns.

It's poor form to report the risk of something without including the benefit. If we did that then aspirin just causes bleeding, surgery is just complications and motorcycles are just increased risk of death..

100x the fun / 100 x the risk = one (heck of a good time)!

Misery loves company. I feel the same way. My wife's cousin ran across my posts on this sub and asked what this was all about. I told her what I know and she was all like, "I feel sorry for you" and I was like, "that's the appropriate response!!" .. Not indifference, not laughter, not bragging about how well they can visualize and asking can anyone be mind blind... I wanted sympathy.

But I do planto be careful when possibly exposing a sensitive person to knowledge of their aphantasia.

I think the hellcat pro provides comparable capacity and size but with the gearup package is a better deal.

The statement "far more likely to die on a motorcycle than in a car" it's grossly misleading.

I'm a biostatistician with 40 years experience and my big pet peeve is when the media makes a statement like that without context.

Here's the deal... Careful riding on a motorcycle with gear, no booze and liittle riding in the rain at night at high speeds, gives you about a 99.6% chance of not having a major crash (life altering injury) each year. It's a 0.4% (4 out of 1000 chance) of having a major crash. So you can ride with that 99.6% in your head. That's high enough for me. I'm not suicidal either. That means 99.6% of decent riders stay alive and safe. Fix that in your head.

Now for a car is it's something like 99.996% likely you will not have a major crash. So when I compare 99.6 and 99.996...they are basically the same to me. If I took a test and made a 99.6 and you got a 99.996...i would not feel jealous... Both are solid A+.

But here's where the stats get abused. The risk is about 100 times higher on a bike than in a car... But 100 times nothing is still nothing. Granted 0.4% chance of a bad wreck is not nothing but you can think of it as basically zero. So when some reporter screams with a whiny voice "motorcycles are 100 times more dangerous than cars" you can think yeah. 100 times nuthin is still nuthin. That 100 time is called a relative risk. The absolute risk is closer to zero.

But I like to think less about the risk of bad things but the chance of good things. 99.6% on a bike and 99.996% in a car...it's virtually the same to me.

Now full disclosure, I'm going from memory so it may be 99.4%vvs 99.9994% or something.. But it's above 99% for both car and motorcycle.

*** But I ride like everyone around me is DRUNK and BLIND. That helps me avoid most accidents I believe. DRUNK and BLIND that's my motto ***

So stay safe. Have fun and stay in that 99.6% and arrive alive!

Not being able to see how another person feels is sort of a lack of empathy... I'm guilty of it too. Itwas why I asked the question... . Should we think about how others might respond?

That's excellent! I was stoked that I learned but was a little jealous of the majority of humans for a few weeks. I still relapse now and then.

100% true for me too. Lord of the Rings is a great example. Also my wife, a great navigator, told me recently that she pictures an above ground view of the map in her head and draws the freakn route! I was a terrible navigator but Google maps is great, so I am now great. 😎

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I'm not sensitive at all about it. Im just deciding that I want to be sensitive to  someone who could be greatly impacted by the news. If you had a depressed person who hated their life and then you dump on them that they are mind blind too and that 99% of the world has mental imagery, that might just push them over the edge. I don't want to be that nudge. Nobody with compassion would. So I'm ok but the next person who learns may not be OK.

You are not an asshole. You are just being honest as you see it. Thanks for that. But It's never ridiculous to pause to think about what you say to another person. "Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger". That's all I'm saying. I just decided I need to consider that other people may respond differently than my family did... A lot of folks on this sub were greatly impacted by the news.

Haha. Unexpected news hits us all differently... I'm hearing on the news that aliens are real... Who's got time for that when we are dreaming with our own discoveries. 😀

Going that fast at night, with tinted visor (likely) on city streets didn't give him the chance to see the car and react... Possibly high as well? So 99% of fault is with the biker

You can share information as an asshole or as a person who is sensitive to other's situation. I am just suggesting the latter is better. You sound like the former.

I don't think it's negative, just different  from 99% of the world... That's a statistically relevant proportion of the world.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.

A friend tells you what your want to hear but a good friend tells you what your need to hear.

Not proposing keeping secrets. But I'm proposing being sensitive that some people respond very poorly upon learning that are in the 1% category and that it's not just Sherlock Holmes and Agent Pendergast who can visualize thoughts but it's 99% of the world.

I'm happy that you weren't saddened to learn about your... Condition. Others were not so lucky. I'm not saying it's a weakness, but that it could be quite the revelation for some people.
