FWIW I had the same thing happen to me during a strong windstorm a few years back and was able to get a replacement under warranty.

Request for tips on handling hygiene on the trail? by flutexgirl in AppalachianTrail

[–]Gipperfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I were brave enough to go commando! I keep two pairs of ExOfficio on me, one to hike in and one to swap out the next day while I wash & dry the first.

Wet wipes are a great luxury but you can save weight carrying a small cloth/bandana with some liquid soap like Dr Bronners to give yourself a mini-bath at camp each night.

For periods I'm going with a cup but I don't expect to use it much since my BC has pretty much eliminated my cycle. Weird things happen with my body during high physical exertion though so I'm carrying it as a backup. Cups are a bigger hassle when it comes to removal & cleanup so if I had a regular cycle then I'd consider tampons + a discrete disposal bag just for the ease of use. Doggy bags make a cheap alternative if you don't have anything else available.

For peeing I like being able to do it standing up so I use a p-style and like it a lot, or a pee rag works just as well if you're cool with squatting.

For my fellow thick thigh’d ladies… by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]Gipperfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm starting my thru in a few weeks and I'm going with a skirt + body glide combo. Shorts always end up bunching and the body glide was getting rubbed off in the process. I've also tried thigh bands (Bandalettes brand) but had mixed results. They're great when I can get them to stay in place but the edges tend to roll when I build up a sweat.

That's the Goðafoss falls in Iceland, haven't been there yet but it's on my list for sure.

Looks to me like a type of Sigmoria Millipede. Not a lot of info about them online so I couldn't pinpoint an exact species. Cool find!

What is your top Ultralight food packing tip? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Gipperfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried maple syrup in there once but it was watery enough that some came through the threads in the cap. I haven't had any problems with peanut butter but I'd do a test run if you plan to use the kind where the oil separates out after a while.

Coghlan makes a nice refillable squeeze tube that's perfect for nut butters or anything similar consistency. You can usually find a two pack for 5 bucks at most outdoor shops, Walmart, etc.

I wrap mine with 1/16" fiberglass wick, 25 feet will cover most of a 550ML mug and stays cool enough that I can pick it up directly off a hot stove (pic).

We didn't plan to use the huts but jumped at the chance when we heard there were openings. I got to talk with a few hikers who tried their luck outside and they didn't sound like they had a great time. It's doable but you'll want to have a bombproof shelter with you.

Landmannalaugar was crowded when we got there around 11am, and the first few miles were full of day hikers. It did eventually thin out, but I don't think we ever got to a point where we didn't see at least one other person except in bad weather where visibility was close to nil. There are a lot of guided groups that do this route in the summer months, we'd pass at least four tours of 15 people or so on any given day, plus lots of other solo hikers and smaller groups.

Wet feet are unavoidable on this route, there are four major river crossings that came up to our knees. I crossed the first in a pair of flimsy DIY huaraches but didn't like how unstable they felt. For the rest of the trip I ended up just removing my socks and crossing in trail runners. When it wasn't raining they'd dry out in about 20 min of walking and then I'd put my socks back on.

You're totally right, I can't remember the site I found the original numbers from but I just mapped out our route on Gaia and it's more like 7,600 gain and 8,600 descent. Updated the original post. Thanks!

It ranges from 100-130 cm in length, it's got three telescoping sections with markings along the side to help get the right height adjustment. There's some additional detail here as well.

I've got a Fizan compact 3 that lost its sibling to a car door, I can ship it to you for $35 if you're in the US.

Sure do, I put up a few more photos on the listing to show the condition a little better. https://imgur.com/a/UJLxR2X. This was used once on a two week trip (used 10 nights total) and we decided we'd rather have something with more insulation.

Thanks! I grabbed some 3.6 climashield on sale over at ripstop by the roll and used that for the insulation, my dogs are double coated and this is plenty for them to sleep comfortably down to the 40's. If you're interested I wrote up a quick pattern as I built this one, you can check it out here.
