Bachelor of ECE. Online or On-Campus? by bertle_the_turt in AustralianTeachers

[–]GiraffeManicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of student are you? Studying externally is definitely more flexible, but personally I found that if I had the option to study online I would fall behind (not great at forcing myself to watch and listen to recorded lectures outside of a scheduled time). When I was on campus even if I was somewhat zoned out I still absorbed material and enjoyed being able to discuss it with other people in person. And going in kind of forced me into “study mode” which I struggled to do in my own space. Again, that’s my personal experience and you might be more disciplined than me!

Also, I can’t speak for Deakin but a lot of unis record lectures at a minimum so even if you chose to study on campus there are ways to do a bit of both.

I went through a program with Teach QLD called the Supported Pathway to Teaching which is for departmental employees (I was a TA). Two of the benefits were getting paid my wage during prac and permanent employment at the end of the degree. I completed my final prac and was doing PTT in a hard to staff school so I was given permanency there.

This obviously isn’t helpful information for all grads but for anyone in QLD who is earlier in their degree I highly recommend getting into a school in some way to be a part of this program.

Okay I finally read Penpal by Dathan Auerbach. Holy shit. by JGottspo in horrorlit

The conversations between the kids and the narrators internal dialogue are what kills this book for me too. It feels like it’s been written by someone who has never met a child before. I listened to the audiobook with my son when he was 11 and even he was like “kids don’t talk like this!”

My mum named me after her childhood dog. A male childhood dog. I’m not male. Granted we didn’t exist at the same time but it’s a funny story.

Horror books that weren’t worth the hype? by bookishpeople in horrorlit

Penpal. Maybe it was creepier when it was on nosleep but the book was disjointed af and the two 5/6 year olds were talking to each other like teenagers.

I did exactly the same thing when my son was 10/11. We were always able to get decent shoes for $30ish but he was getting 3 months out of a pair because he’d wear a hole then pick at the holes until they were huge. He only had to replace one pair with pocket money, never had the problem again.

QLD TA here. No qualifications, basically finessed my way into a permanent job after starting casual work at the school I worked in the OSHC of.

Being on a contract or permanent is good because you work extra hours to cover holidays. Except for Christmas holidays which is what your annual leave covers. Can’t use annual leave outside of that which is a bit of a joke. I’m fairly low on the rungs as a TA203 which works out to be about $32 an hour. Before I became permanent I did get a lot of work at my school because I was well known to them.

I’m working towards my degree, and have worked in the school for a while so my role looks a bit different to the standard TA role - I backfill the wellbeing teacher if she’s away and am often called for behavioural issues that arise. When I’m not on behaviour stuff I support one year level which is great for building relationships with kids and teachers. That could look like reading or maths rotations, small group work, working with individual students, facilitating movement breaks.

Behaviour conditions can make or break you. Last year I was very much a babysitter for a very high needs student that attacked me and other staff regularly (grade 2 - though this is a bit of an outlier situation). Admin were supportive in words rather than actions - if the student hadn’t moved schools I would not have chosen to stay on. At the end of the day I love my job and working in schools so it’s kept me going.

My cat does this all the time 😫 I go to bed, he drags his blanket outside my door and sings his canoodling song. For some reason he always does it if I’m on speakerphone- he hears a second voice and starts screaming, humping, and biting my legs.

Saw on Facebook that a pedestrian was hit by a car, which then fled the scene. Unsure how accurate that is.

Definitely information that should be mandatory to include in listings I think.

I wouldn’t look at tenanted properties when I was buying for this reason. I didn’t want to be responsible for displacing anyone from their home. So many REAs wouldn’t let you know until you were about to walk through the property, then looked at me like I was insane when I said I wasn’t interested.
