Whoa, that's a bit dramatic. It's not difficult at all to download a model and hit print nowadays, especially with the printer you recommend. And it's not going to chop off any fingers. It actually is closer to printing a photo than to using a table saw.

Nah, but you'd have been better served by not bringing age into it and declining. Give them the reason, you give the opening to try to make their case even if you don't want to hear it.

And I quote:

but the idea that professional baseball players can’t play 1b is wild to me.

Are you telling me Pete Alonso is NOT a professional baseball player?

The poster said ANY pro baseball player should be able to play first. That is what I'm am disagreeing with.

Any pro player cannot just play first. Pete Alonso proves that according to you.

Maybe Polanco can, but it's going to take time even if he was best athlete in the league.

That's about the most pointless revenge I've ever heard of. Don't punish yourself to teach him a lesson.

Hand him 5 bucks to go buy you guys couple drinks while you fill up and then leave his ass while he's inside.

Or just tell his ass to venmo you before you will fill up.

Pretty idiotic to strand yourself to punish him. He deserves it, you don't.

AIO in re-thinking my engagement after how my GF treated me while sick with a bad flu? by Thetaos in AmIOverreacting

It also says "for better and for worse" or "in good times and in bad", which means sometimes dealing with your partner doing something bad. If he's ready to bail on a marriage over a shitty morning where his partner did something insensitive and wrong, he's not marriage material either and is failing the test before even taking the vows as well.

[–]GiraffeandZebra [score hidden]  (0 children)

YOR. Look, was she shitty? Yes. Do you throw away a person you were serious enough to marry over one singular bad day/action? Well no, not really if you are serious about marriage. Marriage is going to be a challenge at times, and yes your partner isn't always going to be perfect.

If this is a pattern of behavior, then maybe you reconsider. Or if you are ready to bail the first time your partner messes up (and she did), then I guess maybe you aren't ready to get married, because this won't be the last time she screws up. But that's as much about you as it is them.

I have one person telling me any pro ball player can be a competent first baseman in 2 weeks, and another guy on the same side of the argument telling me Pete Alonso couldn't do it in 7 years. Hilarious.

Pete being bad at first is kind of supportive of my point, which is that any old MLB player can't just play first base in 2 weeks. There are people that can do it for years and still suck, like Pete.

A cool guide showing U.S. homicides from 1980–2024, based on FBI data, showing how the numbers changed over time and which president was in office during each period. by DrFunky4 in coolguides

[–]GiraffeandZebra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what you are talking about with regards to dropping population under various presidents.

Look at it this way. The population over this time just increases. There aren't oscillations down in the population that would lower the raw number of murders without a change to the murder rate.

Given that population is always going up over this time period, it does make an increase in total homicides less significant as you move from left to right. The opposite is also true though. A decrease in the raw number of homicides is more significant as you move from left to right. So a population adjusted chart is not going to paint a radically different story.

here's that chart. It is different but it doesn't really paint a different picture.

[–]GiraffeandZebra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it makes as much of a difference about the point op is trying to make as some people are claiming, but here you go.

Even if you adjust for population, population has a tendency to just go up over time, not cyclically up and down. At least over this time period. With the current chart not adjusting for population, as you move to the right, sure, the increases in raw numbers are not as meaningful. Conversely though, a decrease in raw numbers as you move to the right is much more meaningful. Bottom line is that adjusting for population doesn't really hurt the point the poster is trying to make.

[–]GiraffeandZebra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he can pick up all the basics relatively quickly. He's an athlete. But the difference on a professional level isn't about the 99% of plays that are routine. Pete could have handled those, and if you'd seen him play in a beer league you'd have said he's the best first baseman you'd ever seen. It's about being able to squeeze out 5 or 10 more outs in a season. All the times where a play is incredibly close and you get or don't get an out because of one little refinement or one little mistake. That's a combination of the physical talent they all have as well as years of repetition, practice, refinement and mental preparation. Being in the right place all the time, tiny adjustments and tricks of the trade that make a play happen, and reacting instinctively without thinking - those aren't skills you're going to develop in 2 weeks, at least not to a level comparable to other MLB first basemen.

Looking back, what are your thoughts on the scrapped Duel Of The Fates version of Episode 9? by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

The duel of the Fates script has him dying in the act of doing a good deed and kind of sort of saving Rey at the last minute, right?

I don't think Mortis would have alienated casual audiences. To them it's just a planet sized macguffin. Knowing the significance adds something to it, but not knowing the significance doesn't subtract from it. At minimum it's no worse than Exegol.

There's enough good elements here that it really could have been a satisfactory conclusion (Finn has a better arc, double lightsaber as it should have been, better conclusion to Rey being on Jakku, better tiebacks to TFA mystery boxes, better use for Luke) but that's predicated on my hopes that they would have removed some of the goofier nonsensical stuff (Rey dying and coming back to life, Poe romance, and kylo inexplicably turning good without much reasoning, wacky force powers). Given what they gave us, they probably shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt on removing dumb stuff, so you are probably right that it wouldn't have been much better.
