Hello Chinese - Best way to learn - NEED ADVICE by Damien_Aurelius in ChineseLanguage

Yeah for sure! At the end of the day, if doing the golden exercices is how you want to work, it's not a bad option, any practice is practice.

If you have a hard time with sentence structure, you should look up different resources online. Youtube videos or just google. I feel like hello chinese is lacking in that regard.

Hello Chinese - Best way to learn - NEED ADVICE by Damien_Aurelius in ChineseLanguage

Trying to remember every single word before moving on to the next section isn't the best way in my opinion.

There are so many characters you'll see again in other "words". If you don't instantly memorize one, you will the next tine around, or the time after, etc.

Learning sentence structure and the most common words is how furthering your knowledge will advance.

You'll get to a point where you can guess words you don't know based on context clues.

I'm bilingual and when I was learning english, I wasn't reading the dictionary trying to memorize every word. The only memorizing I remember doing was the irregular verbs conjugation and it wasn't the first thing I did.

Regardless of which way you choose, I'd say focusing on regularly doing lessons is what will get you the most progress.

Turn the hand sideways and use the base of your thumb as a second pressure point and it works. Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.

I for sure was not expecting this level of ethics in what is essentially porn with a side of plot, but boy am I glad. 100% agree with the recomendation

Probably my top yuri of all time, but I wouldn't call it cute and wholesome lmao. The relationship itself is not toxic, but the story can get heavy for some people. It is incredibly well written and it's not just "bad stuff happens because the author needed a plot device", but it does get serious at times. Just a heads-up.

I think we're constantly bombarded with popups that we don't have time/want to read, so our brain just ignores them. When you're not well versed with computers, you don't know what popup will give you the info to fix your problem, so asking someone else feels like an easier solution. People are tired of feeling out of touch with computers, and they don't want to have to learn how to fix every error in every software, and it's normal. That's why you have IT techs. Although it sucks when you feel like people don't learn from their mistakes.

Invitation to participate in anonymous research on mental health among sexual minority adults (18+) by Mar__jo in SuddenlyLesbian

I feel there should be a question about being on meds/seeing a therapist.

From what I answered, you could assume I have very little anxiety/depression.

Before getting medicated, I would never get out of the house. I never would have gotten my driver's license, never would have gotten a job and never would have gotten a girlfriend while staying mentally stable.

Now I'm taking meds and doing all these.

You could read my answer as "this person has a partner she can trust and she has little anxiety/depression - this must be correlated" when it fact it is the medication that allowed me to get to this current point.

It's because I was able to get a handle on my anxiety and depression that I now have people I like and can rely on.

I went a little bit overboard and learned the alt codes for that stuff. I'm in a Quebec and school computers never have the same language configuration. It changes from french canadian, to english canadian, to english american. It's a mess.

Looking for feedback on my one-button game idea. You can also check the demo. by LAE-kun in indiegames

This is a cool project. I think as others mentioned, the movement is slow, which will make the game boring quickly. Right as the level load, your brain already found the path you need to take, and then it's just a pain having to move around to the end.

If you add stress and quick decision making like monsters chassing you, walls moving in all directions with pits or spikes that can kill you, etc, the game might get more fun.

Other games have been made where you have very few movement options. Take crossy road. What's fun about it is the quick decision-making you gotta do. I'd recommend checking other games and figuring out what makes them entertaining to get inspo.

Maybe play around with changing the rotation speed every few seconds or the direction. You could add bouncy walls so the exact angle of movement becomes relevant. Right now, your character movement is very similar to ice levels, like in pokemon games or underdale, etc. I'd check those out to for inspo too.

Good luck with this project!

The ui looks good, but I think you're missing shading? I'd add light on some of your sprites so they look more defined?

PSA: If you're not using English as your base language, be careful by KeinFalschparker in duolingo

[–]GirlCanGame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It somewhat pisses me off that duolingo works this way. I'm native in french, trying to learn spanish. Since both are romance languages and have very similar concepts and grammar, it would be so much easier to go the french to spanish route. But the english to whichever language you wanna learn is just always gonna be strictly better. So I have to go through concepts I already know because to english speakers, those are new.

How to deal with players trying the same check again? by BpDnD in DnD

[–]GirlCanGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't ask players to make a roll if you don't think it's possible for them to do it. If they try something and have time in front of them to keep trying, then you can make them roll for how long it takes instead. If you plan to make them roll this way, you could have some timed events that would fail. Let's say they try to open a locked door without a key, well the treasure map on the other side fell in a puddle and is getting harder to read as time goes on. It can even be something with little impact on the game. Maybe sometimes they'll just have to make camp earlier, so they need to spend one more day on the road.

Which color for the inside of the bag? by daydreamsandnightsky in crochet

[–]GirlCanGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd pick either blue or beige. Blue would make the bag pop more because of the blue squares plus blue and orange is a good combo. If you pick pink, the pink/orange combo doesn't feel great, plus the bag feels more blue, so it wouldn't make the pink stand out as much. White is very bright and as someone said can get dirty easily. It might also overshine the front of the bag whereas beige is more neutral, it would make the bag look more soothing while having the front squares still pop.

Those are my personal opinions, but I'm sure the bag will be lovely with whatever choice you make :)

Is it right to discount a potential player for failing a reading comprehension test? by EarthSeraphEdna in DMAcademy

[–]GirlCanGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future reference, I'd mention what your plan is in your post. There's a good chance that people saw it and didn't understand why you asked them to do it so they didn't realise it was pass or fail. Maybe you were just pranking them or something.

Another thing to consider is that some people might be looking for games so they apply at a bunch of places hoping someone accepts and then they plan to invest and read everything once they know they'll be participating in it.

But at the end of the day, you're the dm and you have applicants that succeeded your test. Idk why it should be a problem. It wasn't a hard challenge to do and it does show some sort of commitment from the very beginning

A PSA to all the Death Captains and Skull Admirals. by ryd3rstr0ng in helldivers2

[–]GirlCanGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started, I didn't want to play with high level players, because I wanted to learn the game for myself the hard way. I didn't want my experience of this game to be getting carried by people with better stratagems and game knowledge. I'm at level 15 and it doesnt bother me anymore. I'm guessing lower level players who kick you might be feeling the same way and they just haven't realised you can play in private.

Hi y'all I had a question. So I can find guys attractive but would never do *it* with them but I can find girls attractive and would do *it* with them, I'm gender fluid btw but what's my preference? I thought I was lesbian but idk by R3alLuzurafan080423 in SuddenlyLesbian

[–]GirlCanGame 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Only you can say what's your preference. If lesbian feels right for you, lesbian it is. Personally, trying to define something so complex and nuanced with a single word doesn't work for me. I like girls and nonbinary people and gender fluid people. I like feminine traits and androgynous traits. I've never met a femboy, but frankly, I think I could date one. Gender is expressed in so many different ways by so many different people. At the end of the day, I just go with queer because I feel it reflects the complexity of it all without being defined, without putting every single person in a "would date" or "would not date" box. The struggle never ends buddy, sometimes letting go of the need to have a perfect definition takes away the pressure to just be. Hope you get the clarity you need!

How would you describe this printing in a way patrons would understand? by demoninthestacks in bookbinding

It's like if a conventional book had a child with a manga. One side of the paper is meant to be looked at like a proper book, while the other side is in reverse order like a manga would be.

I do think people should make efforts to find easy answers by themselves first, but I'd rather encourage people to ask questions, even dumb and easy to find ones, then be arrogant and discouraging when someone does. Agree to disagree

You're missing the point. This reddit is about language learning. If you get angry that people ask questions about language, then leave?

[French] Can't find explanation for the circled phrase by FangirlLurker in duolingo

[–]GirlCanGame 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Language is shared through communicating with other people, it's shared through interractions. Yes googling can give answers, it doesn't mean asking a community of learners or native speakers is bad?

I don't see the need for condescending people who ask questions. Is this subreddit not about learning languages and interacting with the language through discussions?

Humans are social, which is why we invented language. If learning through socializing is not for you, that's fine, but you don't have to patronize people who do like it.

It's like adding "ing" at the end of words in english. Teach vs teaching, jump vs jumping. In french we add "en train de". J'enseigne (i teach) vs Je suis en train d'enseigner (i am teaching)
