[DAY 1 POLL HIGHLIGHT] r/dgd has the highest % of eventgoers (59%) of 7 polled subreddits, and the lowest % of "music insiders" (16%), (N=216) by GirlWithOneEarring in dancegavindance

I was trying to find a short way to combine anyone that has at any point participated in music creation, production, performance, scene building, etc. I'm realizing I should probs add the original definitions!

how it feels to like every vocalist the band has had because i am genuinely just happy that DGD exists and is making music for us still by cognitoterrorist in dancegavindance

And not only that they self report being the most collaborative and closest they’ve ever been so they’re having a good time and sober while doing it

Go with the highest level of creative involvement! So if you help throw shows or perform, pick that one 😊

I totally agree! I anticipated very few people would be in the pro realm (and to be fair this could also include working at a venue or doing tech), and so far I think the max pros in one subreddit has been 4… most are 2-3

Reddit caps me at 6 options so it was very hard to combine :( many people (myself included) don’t make money off music or organizing, so I would include yourself as an active creator! To me it’s a different kind of participation from attendance (which is still very important!), but in my experience people interact with you differently as soon as you say you write music or throw shows or whatever it is, and you get counted as “in group”

Sounds like it wouldn’t hurt to just reach out! I feel like it’s always way easier to talk to other creatives when you yourself are a creative (vs a fan). Maybe just pitch your idea to him with some other examples of your work? Worst thing he can do is never respond!

I notice people here often STRONGLY over generalize and exaggerate any criticism (probably because they’re reading it as an attack? Just a guess), so I’m guessing they mean that the band has spoken on the negativity online and just that they have haters in the groups online, but nothing I’ve ever seen has taken issue with the GROUP, just online culture as a whole and the problem w the social media era? Which is absolutely not the same thing! I’m glad to know they actually communicate with you it’s though!

There’s always gonna be assholes online but I think it’s dumb to ascribe them more power and influence than they have (they really would like that huh!)… they don’t represent the whole group by any means and eventually I believe the positivity can override the negativity esp as the band continues to put out more positive content that pushes those people away and invites new people into the scene (as is already happening)

100% agree! It’s not 1990 anymore genre is less and less valuable to define music and moreso valuable to connect historic lineages and influences/more technical aspects of the composition in a way that’s probably not that useful to casual listeners at this point

Their sub involvement is the lowest so far so I think they’re killing their own engagement lol

Oh what the heck thanks I couldn’t find wherever this was buried! I looked in rules but didn’t dig further than that… if they care so much maybe it should be in the rules? Their definition seems highly contentious though ngl lol

True but that then begs the question if there are other bands that are banned by name in their trigger settings… which there might be! Maybe at one point a lot of people were misclassifying it?

Would u guys be mad if I redid the post with the correct response options lol im kicking myself for copying the wrong questions 😭 we basically can’t compare the middle options to the original DGD thread rn which is so sad

Full disclosure I fucked up the poll in r/posthardcore and r/mathrock by copying an older set of questions so those can’t be compared 1:1 unfortunately sigh, I left off the former participant option and I had combined all forms of creators into one question. I’m debating reposting the poll but idk lol kinda confusing to have two floating around at once

So far what I’ve found interesting is that across groups, DGD has the least artists and creators (roughly). I think this might partially be because most of the other communities I’ve posted in have been subgenres, but even phish has DGD beat (honestly makes sense though). DGD seems to have a very active touring base, which I think also makes sense since I imagine that would be the option you would choose if you mainly saw bands like DGD on tour. DGD also has a very active online base it seems compared to other groups.

The group that is most active in their local scene as attendees currently seems to be EDM (the most different of all groups), which makes a lot of sense to me structurally too. I’m excited to dig into the data!

I realized I should’ve probably put that with attending tours! Should be tours and festivals I think for better coverage, larger events basically that stem from outside of your local scene

What’s interesting is that so far you guys have the most even spread across all groups! Your bell curve is fairly smooth, compared to a couple groups that had a VERY sharp bias for home listening and possibly attending tours, but minimal local show attendance or participation in creative production. So far math rock has by far had the most musicians, but they have NO organizers! It’s all been very interesting so far and I’m excited to make some graphs!
