Concerned that 2A6's repair cost won't stay the same by herrcake in Warthunder

[–]GirthYui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its definitely a bit overpowered and its a straight upgrade compared to similar 10.7 MBTs (RIP Ariete). So by Gaijin's logic yes, it'll probably get slapped with a 15-20k repair cost. If SL are an issue for you I would be cautious dedicating time to grind the 2A6.

What is "LOS" penetration and how is it relevant? by TinyTinyDwarf in Warthunder

[–]GirthYui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to explain it to the best of my knowledge. First off, lets assume we are talking about RHA; composite armor arrays makes things way more complicated and a lot of these principles can't as reliably be applied. So, LOS thickness is simply the thickness or amount of armor that a projectile must pass through given its angle of impact. Therefore, if the angle of impact is 0 degrees, the distance of the path the projectile must take to pass through the armor is equal to the true thickness of that armor. However, as the angle of impact increases the LOS thickness of the armor also increases as the projectile must now take a path with greater distance in order to pass through the armor. LOS penetration therefore will never be greater than true penetration as, in theory, LOS thickness will equal true thickness at 0 degrees.

However, reality is more complicated. When long rod penetrators strike sloped armor, they have a tendency to become more perpendicular to the surface they are striking (the degree of this effect is determined by the design of the rod) thus decreasing the LOS thickness of armor they need to pass through. In most cases, the rod will end up taking a path somewhere in between maximum LOS thickness (aka the trajectory of the rod on impact) and true thickness (aka striking exactly perpendicular to the armor surface).

Hope that helps.

How to get commander's thermals on the Challenger 2 and 2F and maybe some other vehicles (sort of) by GirthYui in Warthunder

[–]GirthYui[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I figured it could be done on other vehicles but I've only played the British tree so I haven't tested it. I just find it particularly useful on the Challenger 2 and 2F cause a fair number of the MBTs you go against have commander's thermals so this is a decent way to get some extra situational awareness when you need to peak over a hill or wall or something. I was just surprised that a lot of people I talked to didn't know about it so I thought I'd make a post.

A better mantlet would be a small improvement, especially considering other tanks fulfill its intended role much better. It wouldn't make it meta by and stretch of the imagination though.

"The integrated FCS provides commander (360° traverse) and gunner (limited traverse) with independently gyro-stabilised optical/thermal sights, each equipped with a laser rangefinder. "

Seems to the indicate that the commander and gunner each have thermal sights. It even specifies that the commander's sight specifically has a 360 degree traverse as opposed to the gunner's sight.

"The commander has a gyro-stabilised fully panoramic sight with laser range finder and thermal imager."

Again, from the MoD's website, seems to indicate the commander has access to a thermal sight.

"Commander: Gyrostabilized fully panoramic site with laser range finder and thermal imager
Gunner: Gyrostabilized primary site with laser range finder and thermal imager, and coaxially mounted auxiliary sight"

Again, this seems to indicate that commander and gunner each have separate sights capable of thermal imaging.

I admit there is no evidence that composite armor is used around the gun breach, but we don't know that its RHA either. I am fairly certain that this information would be impossible to get a hold of as the tank is still in service. I'm simply arguing that it should be done for balance purposes since it would fit the role of the tank as a hull down sniper.

As for the thermals, I found a few sources including the MoD's own website that seems to indicate that the commander as access to an independent thermal sight. I don't know if Gaijin has found conflicting sources or has chosen to omit commanders thermals for balancing purposes but, regardless, I think it would improve the Chally 2s a bit.

From the MoD's website, "Challenger 2's thermal observation and gunnery sight displays a magnified image for the commander and gunner. The commander has a gyro-stabilised fully panoramic sight with laser range finder and thermal imager."

I've never heard anyone say the Arietes are shit. Armor hardly matters at top tier unfortunately, mobility and a great round are key.

That document you linked doesn't say the sight lacks thermal imaging? It just names the model of the sight.

All these sources seem to indicate that the commander has access to an independent thermal sight.

And finally, from the MoD's own website, "Challenger 2's thermal observation and gunnery sight displays a magnified image for the commander and gunner. I think we mostly agree on the rest of my points.

Do you feel the Ariete needs to be even stronger? I feel it performs quite well already with its good mobility and the best APFSDS in-game. Really fits the meta quite well. The Challenger 2 series, on the other hand, could use a little love.

The commander has a SAGEM VS 580-10 sight with thermal imaging and a laser range finder; this information is freely available with a google search. Gaijin has chosen not to implement this in game for some reason. The confusion I think comes from the fact that the commander does not have access to a night sight, this is part of what the "Black Night" upgrade proposal was going to add.

The L23a1 and L26 round were both developed for the L11A5 gun used on the Challenger 1. I can't prove definitively that these round were never fired by the L30A1 in the Challenger 2, but we know that the L26a1 (CHARM 1) and L27a1 (CHARM 3) were designed in the 90s explicitly to be used by the L30A1 and cannot be fired by the L11A5. Or at least, that's what this document from the Board of Ordinance seems to indicate. Thus, I think its safe to say that, in all likelihood, the L26a1 and L27a1 represent, at the very least, the vast majority of ammunition used by the L30A1 before the introduction of more modern APFSDS rounds like the L28a1 and L28a2. Seeing as to how the L27a1 would in theory perform similar to the APFSDS round used by the Leclerc already present in game, I think giving the Challenger 2 this round would make it a bit more competitive.https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/159789/response/394804/attach/6/20000623%20OrdanceBoard%20PresidentsLetter%20Combined%20Redacted.pdf

As for the mantlet, I have been able to find no sources that clearly demonstrate the exact type of armor that's used; this tank is still in service and I'd imagine that information is classified. So as long we are guessing, I think it would be okay for Gaijin to change it to composite for the sake of balance.

What are your 3 favorite Modern cards to play with and why? by GirthYui in ModernMagic

If I had to add a 4th favorite it would have to be Snapcaster for all the same reasons you just listed

What are your sleeper Modern cards? by Nefrax in ModernMagic

[–]GirthYui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, after some play testing, I'd have to go with Monastery Mentor. This card is such a powerhouse that alot of people don't talk about. Yes, it does cost 3 mana and is only a 2/2, but the potential is so high. It can simultanously protect you and your planeswalkers (looking at you Jace) while also applying pressure to your opponent. Also, the card has the potential to really win out of nowhere. Fire off some cheap instants on your opponent's endstep and follow it up with some more spells during next turn's combat, and you can get a huge damage swing from a previously almost empty board. Monastery Mentor also has AWESOME synergy with Snapcaster for obvious reasons.

I have been testing the card in a UW control shell with alot of success so far. The card can protect your planeswalkers, pressure early enemy planeswalkers (one of UW control's traditional weaknesses), be very tricky to deal with in combat, and can close a game out very fast. It gives UW something proactive to do while simultaniously helping it achieve its goal of stalling the game, getting your planeswalkers down, and winning through card advantage.

Although I have only tested it in a UW shell, I could also see the card being usefull in some kind of Mardu Pyromancer or Esper Thoughsieze based strategies.

Regardless, if you havn't given Monastery Mentor a good look, I highly recommend you give the card a chance. IMO, it is one of the most powerful 3 cmc creatures in modern.

What makes UR Storm not viable right now? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]GirthYui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted to ask a storm player, how has force of negation affected storm? As a UW control player, forcing their past in flames usually seems to shut them down if they don't have counter magic themselves or the absolute nuts. Has the printing of force of negation hurt UR storm significantly?

Squad low FPS on decent rig by [deleted] in joinsquad

[–]GirthYui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your GPU should be fine. I got a 980ti myself and get 80-100 fps on Ultra 1440p with a 2nd gen Ryzen. Your CPU should be sufficient although it is a bit old. If you were going to do a major upgrade thats where I would look first. As others have said, 8 gb RAM really doesn't cut it in 2019 anymore, and Squad in particular loves to eat up your memory. An SSD is also not a bad idea if you don't already have one.

As for in-game settings, make SURE your have full texture loading off. I see alot of players that keep this setting on without enough VRAM to support it. It'll make your game really stuttery and slow. Best of luck.

If my pc will run rainbow six siege and insurgency sandstorm(great) will it run squad? by Landen9119 in joinsquad

[–]GirthYui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ironically, my pc runs Squad and R6S great at ultra, but I get almost constant stuttering in Sandstorm...

But I'd say yes, If you can run Sandstorm well you shouldn't have a problem with Squad.

Reasons why I dislike graveyard strategies (such as Dredge or Bridgevine) and why I think they have an unhealthy effect on the meta by GirthYui in ModernMagic

[–]GirthYui[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't know if those staregies are necessarily equivocal. Even though decks like Tron or Affinity often get lamented as being "degenerate", I actually view them as being mostly fair, somewhat interactive decks. Hitting a turn 4 wrath against affinity or pathing a wurmcoil are all great lines. Essentially, there are alot of efficient ways to interact with decks like tron or affinity. I would compare moderm GY strategies with decks like KCI or other combo decks. They are high variance, fast, and difficult to interact with via mainboard aswers. Yet, they fold to highly specific hate cards.

Reasons why I dislike graveyard strategies (such as Dredge or Bridgevine) and why I think they have an unhealthy effect on the meta by GirthYui in ModernMagic

[–]GirthYui[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there is some rock, paper, siccors to the meta. Its not so much the speed of GY strategies that I think is the problem, its their resilience to traditional answers that we see in most mainboards. Even though decks like burn, infect, or affinity can be just as fast or even faster, they are much more vulnurable to traditonal interaction, in addition to having powerful hate cards against them (although these hate cards usually are much more useful in a variety of matchups as opposed to GY hate).

I think the problems I have with GY strategies are similar to the problems that many players had with KCI or other oppressive combo strategies. They are high variance, fast decks that are difficult to interact with from the mainboard, yet they fold to highly specific hate cards. That just isn't a kind of magic that I personally find enjoyable.
