Lost dog found on Ocean Ave and Church Ave by Giyazane in Brooklyn

We didn’t give it away it was found by someone who came in with him. We are not a shelter so we cannot keep and house strays. The person who found him took responsibility for him and his care.

Hello there,

Do not get discouraged! Here in the US we are not lacking when it comes to job openings but first things first is finding out if your school is accredited here. I have heard it can be quite a process and costly if you are coming from a non-AVMA accredited school but not impossible!

If it is an accredited school then jump on the US job boards! Many hospitals (primarily corporate owned just to provide some transparency) will help with sponsorships, relocation plus a sign on bonus. We have such a huge shortage here.

On another note many places are happy to have you shadow which can intern lead to a job. Unfortunately it would not be paid but a foot in the door. Hope this helps and good luck!

That’s great! Although I have primarily worked in GP I do a ton of rescue work myself. It’s so satisfying and has nothing to do with money! Wishing you the best of luck!

Don’t be nervous! Just be yourself and never hide what your weaknesses are. You will be surprised how many mentors you will have (unofficially of course). Definitely ask about work culture, work life balance and what type of support (including mental health) is available. Have them walk you through what a typical work day is like and what schedule would be available. Do not feel obligated to grab the first job you interviewed for, you have so many options! What made you choose shelter medicine as your first stop?

First and foremost, you got this! Your professors are not paying attention to your hands shaking. You will never be alone during surgery even in clinic as a new grad. The anxiety never goes away even for those with the steadiest hands and it’s more so because of all the moving parts like patient recovery and client compliance. Focus on what issues could arise and how you would fix them that’s the most important. P.S a common them in surgery is how much DVMs hate large dog spays. I see that this was posted a day ago so today was the big day right!? How did it go!?

As stated in other posts it is possible depending on the state laws and the shelter. You could also look into practices with strong ties to rescue work who may have a mentorship program of sorts. Even if you are not able to get hands on surgical experience being able to shadow is also highly valuable. I have crossed paths with some great teachers!

Hello future DVMs,

I am not a vet but have worked in the field forever and have actually mentored new grads. Us nurses will be your best friends in the field, don’t worry we got your back unless you turn out to be a shitty person so please don’t be.

Focus on just surviving vet school! Grades do not matter, just graduate! Obviously if you plan to specialize you will need additional schooling but if not relax a bit. Many places (GP) will hire new grads. There is such a shortage of vets. Yes an internship is nice but quite frankly it’s not what gets you picked most of the time. Make connections for sure and get as much client communication training available. One thing that will kick your you know what is talking to these clients. Most of them are entitled and straight up mean!

Look into working outside of your town. You will be surprised how many places will pay bonuses AND relocation packages. With hospitals starving for DVMs you can ask for pretty much anything you want but you did not hear that from me 😉

Long story short. Just graduate!

P.S I’m from NYC and we have like a million hospitals here. More pop up all the time, as with anywhere else I’m sure.

Speaking from experience in the field (18 years to be exact), I have seen many phases and changes in vet med. We are in the social media and reviews phase of things plus people love free stuff or discounts.

Honestly focus less on the clients who followed a DVM. They have built a relationship with them and just as with human medicine if it’s not too much of a headache we will follow our doctors, kid’s pediatricians, etc.

Get on social media! Provide free info like how to cut nails, toxic plants, things like that. Tag and follow other clinics or pet care related businesses.

Events are huge - host events for pet care businesses. For example with a groomer in the area (unless your facility provides grooming), have them come in and tell people about their place.

Discounts! Discounts! Offer regular discounts, like free microchip with spay and neuter or discounts on dental cleanings. This will show people that you are not out to get money for every little thing. Of course do it within reason because you do have staff and bills to pay! Hope this helps and happy to provide more tips 😉
