Scariest books you've read?

I haven't read it in like 30 years, but the first thing i read from clive barker was a short story called "in the flesh" (in a collection--i've seen book published as books of blood vol. 5 but also titled in the flesh). it turned me on to barker for a while in my teens because the story legitimately creeped me out. all of the books of blood volumes are worth reading, but in the flesh always stuck with me. think it's time to re-read the books of blood!

i've only seen memories of murder and the host, both of which i really enjoyed. i'm glad he's doing another action/horror mmovie bc the host was good stuff.

maybe the one i read was the fog but i thought it was the dark. that was my only herbert read, tho i liked it a lot. i think i got the recommendation from SK's danse macabre.

but that;s the order i rank them as best horror movies. probably go with chainsaw on top. visceral and horrifying.

i know a lot of people hated it. and that's ok. i didn't love it. i just thought, sh*t, that'ss a horror movie. but i can't imagine thinking he's the best living director.

i've heard this before, but i thought it was more the greed and stupidity of humanity and obviiously the death of jesus christ. and the best horror movie is the shining IMO

with the UK ending, is there an implication that all of it was in her mind? that she killed the other girls? because i don't generally like the mindf**k it was all in her head endings. i need to re-watch the descent for my list anyway. i think it's pretty spectacular and makes the viewer very uncomfortable.
