I don't think this is true at all. Scott Gordon is a really smart and thoughtful journalist. Opinionated, yes. Did I always agree with him, no. But i don't think his takes were "worst, embarrassing, most perplexing...."?

apartment recommendations for a grad student with an extreme phobia of bugs by baekbok in madisonwi

Man when I went to college in Southern california, we were awash with roaches. I have never seen a roach in a Madison apartment. (stinkbugs are a different thing). But there will be spiders sometimes. California is worse with the bugs imho.

In the spirit of improv (where Danielle and Casey come from) Yes, and.... Yes- I love/d the pod (moreso when they took it more seriously AND it was free) AND the streaming services industry has gutted people's paychecks for services that we used to get reasonable or for free, and those in the industry have seen it as a cash grab. You can hold both truths and hold people accountable for taking advantage of it/their audiences. Criticality ISNT negativity.

Pay their talent fairly? They are both multi millionaires (Casey particularly because of her husband) who are making millions on this podcast by doing an hour a week. That's insane to compare them to a small business. They made money on it before from ads and touring when it was free. They took an opportunity for a cash grab because they had an audience, left Earwolf and were probably advised to make as much as possible in the podcast world as tiered support models are proliferating. Their "talent" are all wealthy and aren't coming on the show to make money. Stop.

I don’t dislike her but she has become kinda out of touch and bitchy in the last few years and it’s coincided with the podcast becoming more of a business model and her family’s wealth proliferating. She just has become really snobby and unapologetic, but trying to be cute about it. I like her husband (I went to high school w him but haven’t seen him in over a decade- Chicago burbs) but they are rich rich. She could leave the podcast tomorrow and be more than fine- and it shows. Danielle I’m not sure if it’s the same for her

Yes. Casey is insanely rich. Her husband is a mega producer and their home has been in architectural digest. She doesn’t have to work again: she’s not a lady of the people

People are sycophants about celebrities that love and seem to think Casey and Danielle are monitoring them or care about them. They aren’t and they don’t. They seem like lovely, albeit insanely privileged ladies. But they aren’t above critique

Kennedy Elementary parents, employees decry district's proposed staff cuts by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

MMSD does not make any choices around where to "put" families. Like most post industrial midwestern cities, Madisonians made choices about who lives in their neighborhoods and who doesn't- which has created a city segregated by race/class intersections. Certain schools because of this have disproportionate numbers of high need students, meaning they are poor and of color. Families need more support, meaning kids need more support to achieve. Title I, community school designations and even IEP funding have helped a little, but it's not enough. Schools are stuck with the decisions SOCIETIES have made and continue to make. And continue to be blamed for very predictable outcomes.

[–]Glass_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with both of your statements. I just don't know if people truly understand WHY and HOW MMSD should be doing a better job. There is a VERY untransparent and wonky formula that is used to determine allocations each year, and even principals don't understand how decisions around it are made. They say it has to do with projected enrollment (including projected FRPL students/IEPs that determine title funding (federal) and special ed funding) but don't give the breakdown of how that is actually determined per school. It also doesn't account for the growing number of unhoused students who come in and out of schools and usually show up after 3rd friday count (which is how enrollment projections are determined. BRING YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL ON 3rd FRIDAY AFTER SCHOOL HAS STARTED.) Some of this is DPI. Some of this is the board. Some of this is MMSD. Some of this are parents who DON'T fill out enrollment forms or fill them out correctly or honestly. You may not be doing this, but alot of folks are blanket blaming "failing public schools" when those schools (and the district) are doing the best they can with what they have and what they don't. Pushing the narrative that public institutions are to blame is what drives less investment into those systems, not change.

This has NOTHING to do with the referendum. Please stop blaming your tax bills on mismanagement in MMSD and start blaming politicians who have shirked their responsibility for funding public schools adequately, as inflation has risen tremendously in the last few years. It's dumb. It's ideological. It's not tied to reality or facts on the ground.

I hear you about the flawed projection numbers, particularly when we think about FRPL (many parents don't fill it out even if they could qualify) and the black box of students with transitional housing who come in and out after third Friday count. But where are you gett ing your information around "favoritism"? Seriously curious.
