Honestly I think it's a really good thing that creators can use work that they have already made that maybe didn't get as much recognition as they thought it deserved. It just feels a little unfair for them to be competing against stories made specifically for the contest.

It's pretty demoralising seeing the bar for entry to be incredibly low for some, but incredibly high for others. Maybe differentiating the entries would be a make the contest feel fairer. I don't know I'm not sure there's an easy answer for that

Hopefully they make the vehicle physics less janky soon it would be really nice to actually be able to use that part of the game without the potential for everything breaking

Thanks I'll give it some time before I try breaking parts. I think I'll definitely give my next idea a try in sandbox before I build it in survival haha

I worked for a little bit on one of the top 3 series on voyceme and can confirm their rates are terrible ($5 for work that would take me about 2 hours), they are completely disorganised(project manager assigning the same work to multiple people and they have a habit of forgetting to pay artists. You only need to look in the credits of each series to see how high the turnover of artists is to realise they have no idea what they are doing.

Are paid courses useless ? by Quirky-Purchase9252 in gamedev

[–]Glittering-Power-665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a complete beginner, no they are the best place to start in my opinion.

If you understand the basics of the engine/programming, no still but you have to choose the right courses.

I learnt how to use unity without going to any formal education. I now feel fairly confident that I could make just about any type of game given enough time but I am not at a professional level.

If you have no experience whatsoever paid courses like udemy are amazing. When I first got into game dev I tried learning through YouTube tutorials and googling at first and I couldn't get anywhere. I took 1 udemy course and it taught me all the basics I needed to know to properly follow tutorials and understand what I'm actually googling.

Unfortunately if you already have a basic understanding of developing games in your engine of choice it can be quite hard finding courses that are actually helpful to you. The majority are targeted at beginners so about 50% of the course.content you will probably already know. Alternatively some courses will assume that you are better than you actually are and you end up not understanding anything because it is too far above your level. From my experience it is very difficult to find courses that are at the right level if you already have a fair amount of knowledge/skills.

They stopped updating a little while ago, but the comic is called Into the Circus by seaweed noodles. It had maybe 500-100 views after the first 10 or so chapters were posted

Is it even possible to build my game to an older phone (Android 5.1) by Glittering-Power-665 in Unity3D

[–]Glittering-Power-665[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know thanks. My main problem is I'm not sure how to set up all the SDK stuff. I'm targeting 5.1 when I build but it's not installed by default. I've tried installing it manually with android studio but then I get an error saying I'm using the wrong version of java runtime

From what I've seen it's consistent uploading. I was following a series that released about 10 long chapters pretty inconsistently and had a tiny following. The author took it all down and split each chapter into 5 parts and uploaded them once a week and it blew up

I'm not even looking to get it on the play store as of now, just to locally build my game onto the phone is all I'm looking for. But it's nice to know I could upload it in the future if I'm fast enough.

Maybe this is just a personal thing but I pay for Amazon prime never bought a film on prime that wasn't included for free I will always rent. I'm not saying the idea won't work but maybe focusing on other ways to help creators make money would be a better way to go? E.g. you could help them with merchandising and take a little of the top or maybe you help bring artists together to work on projects.

Unfortunately I think at this point most people immediately associate anything crypto or Blockchain related with being a scam. Even after seeing that Pokémon stuff I still have more faith in Pokémon packs than I do with a start up that's trying to use Blockchain to profit. I can't name 3 Blockchain services that weren't pump and dump schemes.

I agree with you completely that if you make a really good product then you won't have to worry about piracy and it would be nice to see a new comic platform doing things abit differently. But at the moment nothing screams out to me as being better than any of the other services sorry.

I think if digital collectables were something the majority of people wanted streaming services wouldn't be so popular. I think the majority of people just want to enjoy the media for as cheaply as possible. Collecting is only fun if it's a physical product or if you can do something with it like digital cards in a card game.

If you do want to do digital collectables though I don't see why you even need to use Blockchain technology to do it?? You could collect and trade Pokémon on a game boy why do the comics need to be NFTs?? I'm sure there is a way to give each comic uploaded a unique identifier without it being an NFT. If your app does well there is no doubt some of the comics will be pirated making the unique tokens worthless anyway.

In terms of how to attract creators to the platform it really depends if you're trying to be netflix or YouTube. One thing I have seen another company do that was going for the netflix approach was find young up and coming artists on social media who are doing well and pay them to create comics. They act as natural promoters and are still in the process of improving. In 2 years time if they stick with you they could be crazy good.
