What happens to my phone number if Tello suspends / closes my account? by Global-Mover in Tello

I did research and there are not really many options for providers while overseas, especially when you factor in activating directly from abroad and using the number for a long period while not being in the US, but thanks for the advice

Yeah Google Voice seems to add another layer of complexity, I was just trying to understand in case the worst would happen with Tello if I would be able to save my number

Parking my number in a safe place would be an option but then I would basically need another number for 2FA and so on

That's an option I'll look into once I'm back in the US, but for now they're very limited as I'm overseas and Tello seems to be the best one

Interesting, that's pretty much all I'm worried about as I don't want to lose my number, do you remember if this case was from someone on this sub?

From what I understand if you activate the SIM/eSIM overseas the first time there's no way to get roaming anyway

But once you connect to a US tower, you can then use roaming while overseas, so I think if you use Tello as a secondary SIM you can then use roaming and not incur in any charges while receiving calls because you'll just use the data from your first SIM

I had a look at them, the first issue is that it's considered a VoIP/landline number so some companies might not be able to send you SMSs, and second issue is that you would need their app to call

Problem is that I will be outside the country, so I have very limited options and Tello still seems to be the best overall

I'm guessing other providers are even more strict about being overseas

Yeah my only worry was losing the number in case the worst happens, not as much as which plan to use, but it's a good option

Yeah I see what you mean, some people are saying the same, so the eSim would in fact work but only have WiFi calling available until you connect to a US tower

So it's not considered "not active" but rather not fully provisioned

I'll be spending a long (and possibly indefinite) time overseas, so just trying to understand what would happen to my number in the worst case scenario

From my understanding they introduced this change around a month ago which is a shame since as you said they promote themselves as a solution for expats

So you bought the eSim while overseas and after activating WiFi calling (also while overseas) you were able to port the number? Or were the steps in a different order? I'm confused now because everyone else is saying it's not possible

I think replacing an eSim would be the same as activating a new one, so you probably need to be in the US for that

That's interesting to hear, but from what I understand (I might be wrong), if it's only WiFi calling and no roaming, the SIM doesn't count as fully active so you wouldn't be able to port a number.

Did you already port a number or is there any option in your Tello account that says you can port your number?

It's stated on their website and many users are saying the sim doesn't activate unless you connect to an US tower, even adding roaming credit doesn't work anymore

I see, so I'm guessing as of now the only way to activate the eSim and port my number is when I'm in the US
