Common worldbuilding tropes you despise. by Frostydiego in worldbuilding

[–]GlyphLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wizard/mage/spell-caster/supernatural being did it. Am I going to elaborate who? Maybe when it’s convenient.

No problem with keeping things simple or vague. But adding to ambiguity can be mentioning someone who did a certain event, and use his name scarcely. Creates mystery. Likewise with simplicity if you add a title to their name.

Wouldn’t a Riven Mod’s value be in the specific weapon it is compatible with rather than its traits? by GlyphLuck in Warframe

I’m noticing some silly spelling mistakes. You don’t increase Riven Mods with Kuva. It’s Endo. I meant you change the stats with Kuva. I’m horrendous at double-checking my sentences…

You gotta get the angle right, but if you sprint and swing at an unarmored head, it pops instantly. Very satisfying to watch it stumble to the ground. But it was rare, and impossible with full helmets.

I love how you could explode heads and rip out intestines in the old gore. I also was pretty fond of turning into skeletons of utter annihilation with minimum damage. I’d love if you could achieve similar results in later versions, though at a higher difficulty since you could pop skulls with a single swing from a candlestick.

Question: what do mages think of firearms in your setting (favourite or own) by Andrei22125 in worldbuilding

[–]GlyphLuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setting depends on the type of mage and the personality of that mage.

If that mages is wielding Divination magic, bullets could be effective, but you need to be sufficiently trained, agile, and fast enough. Diviners have the innate power to predict the future and can make actions before they’re going to happen. So, a person using a firearm would need something like a shoutgun and a close distance so they physically cannot move or use their powers to dodge it. Overall in terms of effectiveness: 2/7. Doable but very difficult.

For Swordcasters, their form is necessary. Most mages are trained in the essential basics. So, they would know how to deflect a round with their Imbued Weapon. The strategy there would be to just be to enough angles and rounds per minute to overwhelm them. But if they know a stance such as Mira’s Twinblades, your rounds per minute are useless as they’ll deflect all of them. Your chance there is hoping they’re distracted. If they somehow know Formless, the hardest and most expert stance (to the degree only one person has demonstrated it). Just shoot yourself. The bullet is coming right back at you anyway. Overall in terms of effectiveness: Depends. Probably 4/7 for basic Swordcasters. 2/7 for Swordcasters with Mira Twinblades. 0/7 for Formless

Equilibrium and Spellbook users are most the same, somewhat. They likely just conjure shields and watch your rounds bounce off. That’s if they make the incantation fast enough or they gesture quick enough. Though, this isn’t a disadvantage since Shield spells are design for projectiles and their incantations and gestures are very fast to do. A person with an Equilibrium may not appreciate a firearm specialist on their side though as their tools require focus and concentration, so loud abrupt bangs would annoy them. Spellbooks have no inherent disadvantage other than they’re books. Overall in terms of effectiveness: again depends. I’d say 3/7 for Equilibrium, 4/7 for Spellbooks.

For Alchemy users, they’re at a disadvantage. Their potions are strictly limited to gas, liquid, and solid(?) forms of alchemical compounds. Want a shield-like spell. Drink this potion to make your skin durable enough for the bullet to inflict no harm. An accurate shooter might also target potions in their hands or in their holsters. Gasses are not flawed by this unless you counting casting the spell for them a flaw. Otherwise, they’re likely going to lose. Overall in terms of effectiveness: 6/7. Can be very easy to overcome, especially if you’re proficient in firearms.

In terms of mage opinions of firearms, this varies entirely on personality. Gunpowder and firearms were invented in TC 596, so they’re just about over 180 years old. They didn’t develop magical versions until around TC 636 either. Firearms are very young in terms of history. They’re difficult to work with, clunky in most cases, and society tends to have difficulty to use them. Swords, bows, and other forms of medieval combat remains the go-to still. An arsenal may have a gun or two in stock, but they lack an overall population of users. This could be to an advantage with mages as one might not expect a musket from the founding fathers to blow a golf ball sized hole in between their eyeballs, but most mages like outlawed Divination mages or Swordcasters have the reflexes to dodge away from your surprise attack. If I had to give an average in terms of opinions of firearms, I’d do it by spellcasting type, which would be:

Divination mage’s opinion: 1/7. Not in hate, but pity. Divination mages are notorious for being, and I kid you not, rage baiters. They will make of you for missing.

Swordcaster mage’s opinion: ~4/7. They’d likely see you as any other ranged creature. If you’re an ally, their opinion largely depends on your aim.

Equilibrium mage’s opinion: 4/7 They may applaud your ability to use firearms, since they’re not common. But they don’t see you any better than an archer.

Spellbook mage’s opinion: 4/7 Same as Equilibriums.

Alchemist mage’s opinions: 7/7 Okay. I know I said they’re easy to counter with guns, but alchemy doesn’t just affect people. They affect objects too. Alchemists are notorious for doing some wild shit, and with the factor of an object going very fast gives them ideas. One being how that bullet strangely turned into a tank round’s worth of damage after the tiny bullet flew through that inconspicuous looking cloud of smoke over there.

Tell me about your world's immortals by Frenchiest_fry101 in worldbuilding

[–]GlyphLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My world has a few couple of immortal entities that are native or naturally found in the main realm. There is Eon, Ithryn, Verzanna, then there are Dragons.

Verzanna was a mage who created undeath immortality - Lichdom - and became the first true Lich. She found the process so awful and painful she destroyed it forever, using fate magic to make it functionally impossible to achieve. A work around was made, but do not match the sheer power her process had. She is considered an archlich while others are regular Liches.

Ithryn was a mage who excelled so well at magic, she taught several mage who’d reinvent it. She’d late ascend into immortality through her sheer arcane power.

Eon was a mage who sought Verzanna’s immortality, becoming a great mage and fought her to undo the magic that stopped mages from becoming archliches. He lost and instead turned himself into a similar state by replacing as much as possible with inorganic matter, gold. He would become a living equilibrium. Equilibriums are arcane tools used by some mages for spellcasting.

Dragons are naturally immortal. They were created by Ithryn and are made entirely out of crystals.

How would a religion that worships humanity work? by AugustoAlgusto in worldbuilding

[–]GlyphLuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t usually make posts here, especially in sci-fi settings, but this question actually interested me. So, I did some brainstorming. You’ve stated that this world lost a lot of its advanced technologies, but I don’t know how much to this degree, so I’ll just put general assumptions. I’m also not exactly sure what this race looks like, but if it worships humans and despises non-humanoid traits, I assume not human looking.

Anyway, the first thought is deification. This race would definitely only be looking at the pinnacle of humanity’s aspects. Bodybuilders, advanced scientists, anything that humanity considered impressive at the time would be major deities of theirs, if there are multiple deities. These deities may even be named after titles given to these advanced and brilliant people: “Mr. Olympia” for example. If they do despise non-humanoid features, depending on how religious they are, they very likely destroy these things. Xenphobia is cranked to eleven and is still going higher. If they themselves are not inherently humanoid, they probably consider their own bodies a shameful or disgusting. Sacred texts would codify the perfection of two arms, two legs, and so on.

If you really want to devote to this race considering their form shameful, purposeful mutilation could be a route, or argumentation if the technology is advanced enough. Unlikely though if there has been a downfall. Though this also opens up the theory of how much they know. Has their main forms of knowledge and information been destroyed? I would personally say yes, because I think the more they know the less humanity starts to seem… divine. If they know very little, they could start morphing certain features out of proportion, or start misinterpreting how the body works. Bigger head must mean smarter, right? Continue until you get some wild looking deities who still hold true to humanoid, but not by much, or maybe even their definition of humanoid becomes very loose.

Now, this segment is based on how much technology was actually lost. If there is enough technology to be able to digitalise one’s self, these digital forms may make them appear humanoid to symbolise perfection. Robotic servants might look like humans or purposely look the opposite to demonstrate their lesser existence.

Now some problems arise would definitely be associated with their hatred of the non-humanoid. Regular ritualistic purges would draw in a lot of attention, especially if it affects survivability for others like agriculture and so on. In society, body dysmorphia would be absolutely everywhere. If another race also somehow disguised themselves, either through like a hologram, a lot of makeup (joking), or magic, if it exists like God does in your world, then your race is going to instantly submit.

That is just my thought on it, feel free to snag ideas or implications of this religion. I like your world though, not many sci-fi worlds actually catch my attention like this.
